A suburban Chinese restaurant has shut its doors, and yet another Mexican spot is on its way, taking over the space.
According to a source within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Shing Yee in West Newton is no longer in operation, with a sign out front saying that La Tate Mexican Restaurant is moving into the Washington Street space. The note out front also refers Shin Yee customers to Rice Valley, another Chinese eatery that is affiliated with the restaurant and is located on Washington Street a short distance east in Newtonville. This comes on the heels of news that a number of other Mexican restaurants are on their way to the Greater Boston area, including Chimichurri's in West Medford, El Potro in Chelsea, Mercado Taco Bar in Boston's Faneuil Hall area, Pink Taco in the Seaport District, El Tacuba Cocina & Tequila Bar in Medford, Tequila's Grill & Cantina in Wakefield, Pancho's Cantina in Wilmington, and Achilito's Taqueria in Jamaica Plain.
Shing Yee which first opened in West Newton approximately 15 years ago, was a casual spot that featured mostly Chinese-American fare along with cocktails.
The address for the now-closed Shing Yee (and new La Tate) is 1255 Washington Street, West Newton, MA, 02465.
[July 23 update: According to a source, La Tate is now open, with a Facebook post from the restaurant confirming this. (Another Facebook post from the place indicates that its menu includes such items as tacos, chimichangas, quesadillas, tamales, taquitos, fajitas, enchiladas, arroz con pollo, carne asada, mole, and more.)]
