A local group of steakhouses is saying farewell to one of Boston's most recognizable spaces.
According to an article in The Boston Globe, Smith & Wollensky is closing its location at the Castle in the city's Park Plaza/Back Bay area after nearly 15 years in business, with the company deciding not to renew its lease at the Arlington Street space, instead focusing on its Atlantic Wharf outlet along the waterfront as well as its upcoming location in the former Blue Ginger space in Wellesley. Smith & Wollensky president Michael Feighery mentions that in addition to seeing no need for three Boston-area restaurants, staying at The Castle would have required extensive renovations, saying that "the Castle is 15 years old, and it would likely take a considerable amount of [capital expenditures] to invest back into it." Feighery also mentions that the workers at the restaurant will be offered jobs at other locations. No closing date has been given as of yet for the Castle location of Smith & Wollensky, but expect the dining spot to close sometime this summer.
The Castle is a former armory that dates back to the 1700s, with castleboston.com stating that it is a designated National Historic Landmark.
