Juici Patties to Open Locations in Roxbury and Brockton

Last month, it was reported that a growing group of Caribbean restaurants would be expanding to the Boston area with a location moving into a space just north of the city, and now we have learned that two others are on the way as well.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Juici Patties is planning to open in both Roxbury and Brockton, joining another location that will be opening at Gateway Center in Everett. The Roxbury location will be coming to 16 Taber Street in the Nubian Square area while the Brockton location will be coming to the Westgate Mall, and it isn't known which of the three might open first, so stay tuned for updates as they come in.

The first Juici Patties (which is known for its traditional Jamaican patties) opened back in 1980, and today there are more than 60 locations in Jamaica while outlets in the United States can be found in New York, Georgia, and Florida. Its website is at https://juicipattiesusa.com/

Happii Bellii to Open in the Former Brockton Beer Company Space

A pop-up dining spot known for its Vietnamese fare is opening a brick-and-mortar location which will apparently have a different concept, and it will be moving into the space where a beermaker had been.

According to an article in The Enterprise, Happii Bellii is planning to open in Brockton, taking over the old Brockton Beer Company space on Main Street in the city's downtown area. The article mentions that the upcoming eatery--which was located within Devito's Pizzeria in Taunton in 2024--may not be focusing on Vietnamese cuisine, with a spokesperson for the place saying that it will be "eclectic" and "its own concept" while also saying that "It's not an Asian theme at all."

Tulum Tacos and Tequila Opens in Brockton

A brand new Mexican restaurant has come to a space south of Boston.

According to a source, Tulum Tacos and Tequila is now open in Brockton, moving into a space on Crescent Street where it meets Quincy Street. The menu shows such options as tableside guacamole, street corn, taquitos, enchiladas, tacos, burritos, quesadillas, chimichangas, fajitas, carne asada, and arroz con pollo, and it also offers a variety of margaritas and other cocktails/mixed drinks.

Leal's Grill Opens in Brockton

A brand new Brazilian and Cape Verdean restaurant has debuted south of Boston, and it resides just across the street from another spot run by the same people.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page (via an Enterprise article), Leal's Grill is now open in Brockton, taking over a space just across Packard Way from Leal's Kitchen. The new dining spot is a buffet-style restaurant and focuses on dining in, while Leal's Kitchen is more of a takeout place--and the food offered at the two spots is similar, with the focus at least in part on beef, pork, chicken, and seafood items.

Boston Market in Brockton Appears to Be Closed

Last week it was reported that a restaurant chain that got its start in the Boston area had closed its sole remaining location inside Route 128, and now it looks like its only location inside Route 495 has shuttered as well.

According to a Google search, Boston Market in Brockton has permanently closed, with a call placed to the Belmont Street outlet indicating that the phones are no longer in service, while a check on the Boston Market website indicates that the entire website is actually down. This apparent closure comes on the heels of the Quincy location being locked up and dark on Friday, while a source told us that the Framingham outlet closed at some point as well.

According to a source (Jeremy Krantz), Mother's Daughter Juice + Wellness Bar is now open in Brockton, moving into a space on Pearl Street a bit north of the Route 24/123 intersection. The new place, which has an ownership connection to The Farmer's Daughter in Easton and Sudbury, offers such items as salads, toasts, sandwiches, smoothies, juices, coffee, and tea,

Yas Chicken Opens in Brockton

A growing local group of chicken places has expanded once again, opening a new location south of Boston.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page (via an article from The Enterprise), Yas Chicken is now open in Brockton, moving into a space on Route 27 east of the downtown area. The new outlet joins others in Burlington, Lawrence, Lynn, and Providence, RI, and offers chicken sandwiches, tenders, macaroni and cheese, tots, fries, and more.

Salo Bar & Grill Opens in Brockton

A brand new upscale restaurant has come to Brockton.

According to an article in the Patriot Ledger, Salo Bar & Grill is now open on Route 28 (N Montello Street), moving into a space a few blocks south of where Routes 28 and 37 meet. The new dining spot features what the post says is "classic American food with a twist of island twang" including dishes with Cape Verdean influences, with its menu showing such options as ceviche, fried calamari, tuna tartare, coconut shrimp, grilled oysters, fried pastel stuffed with tuna, lamb chops, seared strip steak, seafood platters, grilled octopus, roasted chicken, deep-fried corn on the cob, and macaroni and cheese, along with beer, wine, and cocktails.

N-Gon Viet Subs Is Opening in Brockton

A new option for Vietnamese sandwiches is opening south of Boston.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, N-Gon Viet Subs is planning to open in Brockton, with the Crescent Street eatery offering banh mi, though it isn't yet known what else might be on its menu. (A Facebook page for the place has been up since the beginning of the year, but very little information has been posted on it.)

Khalil's Kitchen Opens in Brockton

A new restaurant featuring soul food with Caribbean and Cape Verdean influences has come to Brockton--and Boston could eventually see a location as well.

According to an article in The Enterprise, Khalil's Kitchen is now open in Brockton, moving into a space on Main Street a bit south of the downtown area. The post says that owner Rudy Alves serves such items as wings, burgers, and lobster macaroni and cheese, while the restaurant's Instagram page shows options such as jerk chicken sandwiches, surf and turf fries, sweet teriyaki steak tips, and a seafood burger.

Alves mentions in the article that he hopes to open a location somewhere in Boston at some point in time, though specific details have not been given as of yet.

Lady C&J Cafe Opens in Brockton

A new breakfast and lunch spot with southern influences has come to Brockton, and the person behind it used to run a restaurant with a similar name nearby.

According to a source, Lady C&J Cafe is now open at the downtown Brockton Area Transit terminal, with an article in The Enterprise mentioning that Alabama native Cynthia Hodges is the operator of the Court Street spot. The post states that Hodges used to run Lady C&J Soul Food on Perkins Avenue until 2014, when a fire forced her to shut down the place after 3 1/2 years in business.

Hodges says that Lady C&J Cafe offers a variety of soul food options, including such items as biscuits with sausage gravy, macaroni and cheese, BLTs, egg and cheese sandwiches, Jamaican-style beef patties, empanadas, and fish- and chicken-stuffed pastries.

Plans to Open Gastropub with Rooftop Terrace in Brockton Fall Through

Last spring, it was reported that a hospitality group behind a restaurant and rooftop bar in Providence was planning to open a similar spot in an abandoned three-story warehouse in downtown Brockton. Now we have learned that this apparently will not be happening after all.

According to an article from Wicked Local and The Enterprise, plans to open a gastropub with a similar concept to G Pub have fallen through, with the project--which Colin Geoffroy and G Hospitality were behind--being scrapped because of how much it would cost to do the necessary environmental cleanup, including the removal of several gasoline tanks along with what the the mayor's office says is a "buried object of unknown size, adjacent to the interior loading dock area." The proposed redevelopment project also included bringing a mixed-use apartment building to the Montello Street complex along with a grocery store and office space.

Boiling Catch to Open in Former Papa Gino's Space in Brockton

A new Cajun seafood restaurant is opening south of Boston, and it will replace a location of a local group of pizzerias.

According to an article from Wicked Local, Boiling Catch is planning to open in the old Papa Gino's space in Brockton, with the Crescent Street spot offering such dishes as fried shrimp baskets, fried oysters, snow crab and king crab, mussels, lobster, crawfish, and more. If all goes well, the restaurant--which will have seating for approximately 80 people and a small bar area--could be opening by the middle of September.

Brockton Planning to Allow Restaurants to Have Outdoor Dining Service

Up until now, one of the biggest cities in Eastern Massachusetts has not allowed outdoor seating at its restaurants, but that may be about to change.

According to a source, Brockton Mayor Robert F. Sullivan filed a measure earlier this week that would allow outdoor seating at dining spots in Brockton, with the City Council slated to look at the ordinance next week. Our source tells us that this would be the first time that restaurants would have outdoor dining service in the city's history, and that places such as Texas Roadhouse, George's Cafe, Joe Angelo's, Buffalo Wild Wings, Yamato Japanese Steakhouse, Tamboo, Italian Kitchen, and the Cape Cod Cafe are just a few spots that could be allowed to set up outdoor decks or patios.

The Council is slated to look at the measure next Monday, with the mayor hoping that it is fast-tracked for approval.

[June 12 update: A press release indicates that the new program allowing Brockton restaurants to have outdoor areas has been approved, with restaurants now able to apply for outdoor dining--including the possibility of using public streets and spaces if needed--and applications being fast-tracked by the city's new Outdoor Dining Advisory Board. (Amended licenses and permits will be valid until November 1.)]

Flames Opens in Brockton

A local group of Caribbean restaurants has opened its fourth Boston-area location, and this is its first within the local area that is outside of the Boston city limits.

According to an article from Wicked Local, Flames is now open in Brockton, with the Main Street eatery being focused on takeout though it does have some seating for customers looking to dine in. The new location of Flame offers such items as jerk chicken, oxtail, snapper, stewed chicken, fish cakes, and more, and it also offers breakfast items.

As reported earlier, another location of Flames could be coming to the Ashmont/Peabody Square section of Dorchester as well, though little information has been given about those plans of late. (Another outlet of Flames can be found in Providence.)

Chick-fil-A Opens in Brockton

A chain of chicken spots that until recently had very little presence in the Greater Boston area has opened its sixth location inside Route 495, with more possibly on the way.

Wicked Local reports that Chick-fil-A opens in Brockton today, with the Facebook page for the place confirming that the Westgate Drive eatery is indeed open for business. This follows on the heels of another outlet opening in Woburn in late April, with both joining existing locations in Burlington, Dedham, Framingham, and Peabody--and two other restaurants may be coming to Boston's Back Bay and Walpole as well.

G Pub Being Proposed for Brockton's Downtown Area

It appears that a gastropub that would have a retro vibe and a rooftop area is being planned for a city south of Boston that is in the process of redeveloping its downtown area.

Wicked Local is reporting that Colin Geoffroy of G Hospitality is looking to open a location of G Pub in the Corcoran Building (which is being redeveloped into a mixed-use residential complex) in Brockton, joining the original location which can be found in Providence. The article says that the Montello Street spot would have 7,000 square feet of space and have a speakeasy feel to it while having a scratch kitchen, TVs at each of the booths, entertainment such as pool tables, arcade games, and shuffleboard, and a rooftop terrace that is open during the warmer months.

If all goes as planned, the new G Pub could open in the spring or summer of 2020, and it would possibly be a third location of the place, as G Hospitality is planning to open another outlet of the spot in Plymouth this fall. (The restaurant group also runs Rooftop at the ProvidenceG as well.)

Chick-fil-A Plans to Open Outlets in Brockton, Woburn

A chain of chicken places that appeared to have no chance of opening in the city of Boston several years ago is now in rapid expansion mode in the area, with two shops coming to the suburbs in addition to at least two others on the way, including one within the Boston city limits.

According to an article in The Enterprise, Chick-fil-A is planning to open in Brockton, while several sources also tell us that another location is on its way to Woburn, with a Facebook page confirming this. The Brockton location, which will be at 544 Westgate Drive, hopes to open by the late summer, while the Woburn outlet, which will be at 375 Washington Street, does not have an opening date yet, but it looks like it is close to being up and running.

Earlier in the decade, the late Boston Mayor Thomas Menino voiced his opposition to the chain coming to the city based on the CEO's opposition to same-sex marriage, but now it looks like the city's first shop could be opening at 569 Boylston Street in the Back Bay, while another location may be coming to Walpole as well. (Other location can be found in various Boston suburbs, including Burlington, Dedham, Framingham, Marlboro, and Peabody.)

Tommy Doyle's Pub and Grill Moving to Bickford's Space in Brockton

What was once a popular regional chain of restaurants will soon be down to just three locations, as one of its outlets is planning to close--and it will be replaced by a bar known for its lobster rolls, steak tips, and more.

According to an article in The Enterprise, Bickford's in Brockton is looking to shut down for good around the end of the year, and it is currently working on a deal with the owner of Tommy Doyle's Pub & Grill, which would move from its current nearby location on North Pearl Street to the Bickford's space on Oak Street. If the deal goes through, this would leave only three remaining locations of Bickford's--in Acton, Burlington, and Woburn. (At its peak in the 1990s, the Bickford's chain had approximately 70 locations in New England.)

Owen O'Leary's in Brockton May Move to New Space

An Irish pub that has been in business for more than a quarter century is shutting down, and it is apparently due to a lease issue.

Wicked Local is reporting that Owen O'Leary's in Brockton is closing next Friday, with owner Kevin Gill saying that he was not able to agree to new lease terms with landlord Philip Nessralla. Gill says that "Our lease was up. And that was it. We wanted to stay, but it seems some people didn’t necessarily want that," while Nessralla mentions that "No, we couldn’t come to terms....We decided maybe it's better if we try another avenue." It looks like a new, more upscale restaurant will come to the Belmont Street space in the fall, while Gill hopes to find a new location in the Brockton area for Owen O'Leary's. (Other locations of the pub remain open in Southborough and Westborough.)

If all goes well, the new location of the pub could be opening in time for St. Patrick's Day of 2019.]
