Dunkin' Donuts Branch Shown in "Good Will Hunting" to Remain Open After All

Last week we reported that a local branch of Dunkin' Donuts that was shown in the movie "Good Will Hunting" was going to be shutting its doors. Now we have learned that the shop will stay open after all.

A new article from The Harvard Crimson says the branch of the donut chain that is located at the corner of Mass. Avenue and Bow Street in Cambridge's Harvard Square will continue to operate (along with Baskin-Robbins, which is in the same space), and that the "closing" signs were removed earlier today. It appears that the lease, which expired in 2012 and was to be resold, is now apparently back with the donut and ice cream shops once again.

The store was shown in a scene from the 1997 movie where Matt Damon uttered the now-famous line, "How do you like them apples?"

The Dunkin' Donuts/Baskin-Robbins outlet can be found at 1 Bow Street on the eastern edge of Harvard Square.

Dunkin' Donuts Branch That Was Shown in "Good Will Hunting" Is Closing

A Boston-area branch of Dunkin' Donuts that was shown in an award-winning film from the 1990s is going to be closing.

The Harvard Crimson is reporting that the donut shop at the corner of Mass. Avenue and Bow Street in Harvard that was seen in "Good Will Hunting" is planning to close next week, with the owner of the franchise looking for a new location. The store--which also houses a Baskin-Robbins--was used in a scene from the 1997 movie where Matt Damon (as Will Hunting) plastered the phone number of a woman he met on the window and yelled "How do you like them apples?" (The woman being Skylar, who was played by Minnie Driver.)

The soon-to-close Dunkin' Donuts/Baskin-Robbins outlet is located at 1 Bow Street, which is just east of the heart of the square.

News Elsewhere: Dunkin' Donuts to Sell Pork Donuts in China

The world's largest coffee and baked goods chain is going to be selling donuts that will probably grab the attention of meat eaters, though don't expect these treats to be sold anytime soon in the Boston area (where the chain is headquartered) or anywhere else in the United States, for that matter.

An article from Reuters reports that Canton-based Dunkin' Donuts is currently expanding through China and is planning to start selling pork donuts there (donuts with shredded pork, to be exact). The article also mentions that NBA star LeBron James will be involved in the marketing of the donuts--and Dunkin' Donuts in general throughout China--as the Miami Heat basketball player apparently has a large following among Chinese fans.

Reuters states that there are approximately 150 locations of the Dunkin' Donuts chain in China right now, with more than 100 stores on the way over the next two to three years.

The Boston Herald Mistakenly Gives Dunkin' Donuts Story a "Terror Alert"

Quick: What do donuts and terrorism have in common? A lot, that is, if you are to believe an error made by one Boston newspaper yesterday.

An article from the news and opinion blog Mediaite points out that The Boston Herald mistakenly gave a "Terror Alert" to Canton-based Dunkin’ Brands on Tuesday, with a banner running across the top of the online edition stating "Terror Alert: Dunkin' Brands, Franchisee Group Sign Supply Deal." The Mediaite article mentions that the error was quickly removed from the newspaper's site, but for those of you who would like to see what the page looked like before it was fixed, please look at the link below:

Whoops. Boston Herald Website Labels Dunkin' Donuts Update A 'Terror Alert'

While it was obviously a mistake on the Boston Herald's part, Mediaite states (tongue-in-cheek, of course), that "At least, we think it's an accident. Either that or we all need to start worrying about jelly filling shrapnel."

Dunkin' Donuts' Plan for South End Shop Meets Resistance

First there was opposition to a Whole Foods coming to the Jamaica Plain section of Boston, and now there is resistance to a proposed Dunkin' Donuts in the city's South End neighborhood.

Based on information from archBOSTON.org, Universal Hub, and Adam's Hospitality and Tourism Industry Blog, a group called "Voices for Fair Commercial Development in the South End" has used their blog to voice opposition to the planned Dunkin' Donuts at the corner of Tremont Street and W. Brookline Street, stating that the project would "significantly impact the character of the South End and the vitality of its existing businesses" and that "it is unfair to add another restaurant this block, which already has a high density of food establishments and associated issues with trash, parking, etc." The blog entry also mentions that a takeout eatery of this size is illegal based on Boston's zoning codes.

The Voices for Fair Commercial Development in the South End blog asks that folks attend a City Councilor meeting at the South End Library on Tremont Street on Thursday, November 3 to voice their opposition to the proposed Dunkin' Donuts.

Dunkin’ Brands Starts Trading on the NASDAQ

A local company that owns the world's largest coffee and baked goods chain is going public.

According to The Boston Globe, Canton-based Dunkin’ Brands Group Inc. begins trading on the NASDAQ market today with an initial public offering of $19 a share, which would give it a market cap of $2.4 billion. The article states that the company, which also owns the Baskin-Robbins ice cream chain, had been looking to sell shares of its stock for somewhere between $16 and $18 a share. The three private equity firms that own Dunkin' Brands will each have a controlling interest of 26.1%, according to the Globe.

The trading symbol for Dunkin' Brands is "DNKN."

Dunkin' Donuts, which first opened in 1950 in Quincy, currently has more than 6,500 stores in the United States and approximately 3,000 more shops in 30 countries across the globe. The website for Dunkin' Donuts can be found at http://www.dunkindonuts.com/

Dunkin' Donuts Is Serving Up Royal Wedding Donuts to Customers

The world's largest coffee and baked good chain is helping celebrate the upcoming Royal Wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton with a special donut.

According to a press release on their website, Canton-based Dunkin' Donuts is offering Royal Wedding Donuts to customers from now through Friday, April 29, which is the day of the wedding. The limited edition donut is heart-shaped and glazed, with white frosting and a chocolate drizzle on top, and can be found at participating Dunkin' Donuts shops.

Baskin-Robbins, which is part of the Dunkin' Donuts company, is also celebrating the wedding with a Royal Wedding Ice Cream Cake.

Dunkin' Donuts in Newton Highlands Closes; A Restaurant May Be Moving into the Space

A branch of the world's largest coffee and baked goods chain has closed in Newton, and a new restaurant may be looking to open in the space.

According to both the Wicked Local blog for Newton and the Newton Patch, Dunkin' Donuts on Walnut Street in the Newton Highlands section of the city closed late last week, with the Newton Patch mentioning that its closing was based on a business decision between the company and the franchise. Wicked Local states that a restaurant might be planning to open where the now-shuttered Dunkin' Donuts was, but there doesn't appear to be any confirmation of this at the present time.

Several other branches of the Canton-based Dunkin' Donuts remain open in Newton, including locations in Newtonville, West Newton, Nonantum, Newton Corner, and Newton Centre.

Dunkin' Donuts Turns 60; Celebration Planned in Copley Square Today

Dunkin' Donuts turns 60 this year, and it will be marking its birthday with a celebration in the Back Bay of Boston today (Thursday, February 18).

According to the Boston Globe, the Canton-based coffee and doughnut chain will feature a variety of events from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM in Copley Square, including karaoke, face painting, pinatas, visits by local celebrities, free samples of coffee, and the handing out of Dunkin’ Donuts Cards. The event is free and open to the public.

Dunkin' Donuts was founded in 1950 in Quincy, MA, and has since grown to be the world's largest coffee and baked goods chain, serving more than 3 million customers each day.

About a month and a half after introducing their Oven-Toasted Chicken Parmesan Flatbread Sandwich to much of the country, Dunkin' Donuts is now starting to bring the sandwich to shops in New England. The Chicken Parmesan sandwich will join a growing number of flatbreads at Dunkin' Donuts, including the Ham and Swiss, the Turkey Sausage, and a few others.

Canton-based Dunkin' Donuts now has nearly 9,000 locations across the globe, and is the world's largest coffee and baked goods chain.

Dunkin' Donuts Introduces 99-Cent Breakfast Wrap

Canton-based Dunkin' Donuts has added a new food item to its menu this week, boosting their meal options with a 99-cent breakfast wrap. According to a press release from the popular doughnut and coffee chain, the Wake-up Wrap is a round tortilla filled with a scrambled egg and American cheese and has fewer than 200 calories. (Cherrywood-smoked bacon can be added to the wrap for an extra 50 cents.)

The Wake-up wrap joins the popular oven-toasted flatbread sandwiches and hash browns on the menu, which were introduced in the winter of 2008.

Healthier Foods Coming to Dunkin' Donuts

Starting in August, Dunkin' Donuts will start to feature some healthy food items on their menu.

According to the company Web site, Dunkin' Donuts will begin to offer a couple of flatbread sandwiches (turkey sausage and vegetable) that are made with egg whites, with each item being under 300 calories and with 9 grams of fat or less.

Dunkin' Donuts, which is based in Canton, MA, is offering these items as part of the launch of a menu of healthier items called DDSMART. This menu includes a reduced-calorie Berry Smoothie and an unsweetened iced tea.

Dunkin' Donuts Officially Launches Oven-Toasted Menu

Dunkin' Donuts announced today that its Oven-Toasted menu, which has been in test stages for the past year, will now be available in about 3,500 locations across the United States over the coming months, including shops in New England and the Northeast.

Dunkin' Donuts, which is based in Canton, MA, stated in a press release that the new menu will include personal pizzas, flatbread sandwiches, and hash browns.

Dunkin' Donuts to Have Self-Service Kiosks in Hess Gas Stations

Dunkin' Donuts, has announced that a number of convenience stores located within Hess gas stations will soon offer coffee and donuts via self-service kiosks. According to the Dunkin' Donuts Web site, Hess stores, mostly outside of the New England area, will start adding their self-service stations in January, 2008. Dunkin' Donuts, which is based in Canton, MA, also said that they will offer hot chocolate along with coffee and donuts.
