Thazia Is Opening in a Shipping Container by the Innovation and Design Building in Boston's Seaport District

A new Thai and Asian fusion restaurant is on its way to Boston, and it will be opening in a tiny space by the waterfront.

According to an article from Eater Boston, Thazia is planning to open on the promenade of the Innovation and Design Building in the city's Seaport District, setting up shop in a shipping container that it will lease initially for one year. The post mentions that Panupak Kraiwong--who founded Dakzen in Somerville's Davis Square (and has since moved on)--is opening the new takeout spot and that he will be working with chefs Faye Prapawicha and Sasirin Siwayawirote to offer a seasonal menu that includes Southern Thai fare along with "a melting pot of Asian food," while ramen will apparently be part of the offerings.

If all goes well, Thazia plans to open on February 2.

The website for Thazia can be found at https://thazia.com/ while its Instagram page is at https://www.instagram.com/thaz1a/

Mario Batali Is Opening Babbo Pizzeria at Fan Pier in Boston

A year and a half ago, we reported that a New York-based celebrity chef, restaurateur, writer, and TV personality was looking to open a restaurant in the Fort Point section of Boston. Those plans ultimately ended up falling though last summer, but now we have learned that plans are back on to open the eatery at a nearby location.

The Boston Globe is reporting that Mario Batali is going to be opening Babbo Pizzeria at Fan Pier toward the western edge of the Seaport/Innovation District, with the 8,700-square-foot restaurant offering wood-fired pizza and pasta dishes and having separate bars for drinks, antipasti, and pizza, as well as an outdoor patio and private space for large groups. It had originally appeared that Babbo might open on Summer Street in the Fort Point neighborhood, but plans to open there never came to be, and by August of last year, it appeared that there were no plans in the works for Batali to open a place in Boston for the foreseeable future.

If all goes as planned, Babbo Pizzeria could be open at Fan Pier by the end of the year, according to the Globe.

[August 20 update: Universal Hub mentions that if the Boston Licensing Board approves of the plans for Babbo Pizzeria tomorrow, Mario Batali will pay $410,000 for the Castlebar's liquor license (the Castlebar was a Brighton bar that closed earlier this month). UH says that the mayor's office and several city councilors already support plans for Babbo.]

[April 14, 2015 update: The Boston Globe states that Babbo opens tomorrow evening at Fan Pier.]

The Briar Group to Open a New Restaurant (Gather) and Cafe (Brew) at District Hall on the South Boston Waterfront

[Ed note: This article was updated on September 18 and 23 to reflect the addition of new information given, including the fact that this will be two places, not one.]

A new restaurant and a new cafe are coming to an upcoming public innovation center on the South Boston waterfront, and the folks behind them also run a number of other dining and drinking spots in the local area.

The City of Boston website reports that The Briar Group is opening something new at District Hall, which will be located on Northern Avenue in the Seaport District/Innovation District. The one-story building, which is currently under construction and will be "the world's first free-standing public innovation center," will have 12,000 square feet of space, with 3,000 square feet dedicated to a restaurant and test kitchen that will be open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It appears that the Briar Group is hoping for an opening sometime this fall. (The District Hall building itself is looking to open in mid-June.)

[September 18 and September 23 updates: A post from Eater Boston indicates (via Craigslist) that the new cafe will be called "Brew," and that it will serve breakfast, lunch, and (an early) dinner with beer, wine, and cocktails offered. A newer post from Craigslist also says that a modern American restaurant and bar called "Gather" will be opening adjacent to District Hall, with this also being from the Briar Group.]

[October 15 update: Eater Boston states that Brew is now open.]

[October 15 update #2: Another article from Eater Boston says that Gather opens on Thursday (October 17).]

The Briar Group, which is based in Brighton, operates Solas, The Green Briar, O'Connor's, Anthem, Ned Devine's, City Table, City Bar, and The Harp. Their website is at http://www.briar-group.com/

The address for this upcoming restaurant and cafe (as well as District Hall) is 75 Northern Avenue, Boston, MA, 02210.

Shrine (a New Asian Restaurant) to Open Along the Boston Waterfront

The group behind several restaurants and nightclubs in the Boston area and Connecticut are going to be opening a new restaurant and lounge on Boston's waterfront, and it will apparently be an Asian-themed spot.

According to The Boston Herald, Big Night Entertainment is planning to open Shrine Boston, a new place at Fan Pier in the Innovation District (just north of Northern Avenue and just east of where Fort Point Channel opens out into Boston Harbor). The article states that the eating and drinking establishment looks to be a "first-class and high-quality" place with Asian influences, and its 12,000-foot space will be in the same building as Strega and Caffe di Marina.

[January 16, 2012 update: According to The Boston Globe, a liquor license application for Shrine Boston has been delayed by the Licensing Board because there are currently no licenses available at the present time. The article mentions that if a liquor license becomes available over the course of the next 30 days, it will be granted to the dining spot, which is hoping to open sometime this summer.]

Big Night Entertainment is also behind the Red Lantern in Boston's Back Bay, Tosca in Hingham, The Estate in downtown Boston, and three spots at Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut.

The address for this upcoming restaurant and lounge will be: Shrine Boston, One Marina Park Drive, Boston, MA, 02210.
