Pon De Joy to Open in Malden

A pair of Boston-area shops that feature donuts with a mix of American and Japanese influences will soon be joined by a third outlet.

According to a source (Geoff Wong) who posted about it on the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page as well as an article from the Daily Voice, Pon De Joy is going to be opening in Malden, moving into a space on Pleasant Street in the downtown area. Based on its other two locations in Allston and Newton Centre, expect to find a variety of mochi donuts (a fusion of American-style doughnuts and Japanese rice cakes) along with the possibility of coffee and tea.

Spadafora Slush in Malden Has Closed

A decades-old business known in part for a regional treat has shut down.

According to multiple sources, Spadafora Slush in Malden is no longer in business, with a Facebook post from the Highland Avenue place confirming this, saying that it closed its doors as of August 31. The shop got its start more than 40 years ago as a convenience store in another space on Highland Avenue, becoming a slush and ice cream shop at its current location and selling a variety of slush flavors along with Richardson's ice cream.

The address for the now-closed Spadafora Slush was 136 Highland Avenue, Malden, MA, 02148.

The Foodery Has Closed for Good; Cites COVID-19 Crisis As Reason for Closing

A local business that focused on food delivery has shut down permanently, and the coronavirus outbreak appears to have been the cause of its closure.

According to a message sent from Lillie Marshall, The Foodery is no longer in business, with a note on the company's website saying the following:

Amid the COVID-19 crisis, it is no longer possible for us to continue operations. Our methods of preparation and delivery of our products inherently requires intense team collaboration and interaction with suppliers, purveyors and customers. The effect of this crisis on our team and operations has become too uncertain to continue accepting customer orders, so it is in the best interest of all of our stakeholders to close The Foodery.

The Foodery, which was headquartered in Malden, was known for its ever-changing seasonal dishes made using locally sourced and organic ingredients. The food delivery company first started out approximately seven years ago.

Plans for Mystic Brewery to Open New Facility in Malden Have Fallen Through

Early last year, it was reported that a local brewery was planning to expand to a new space that could include a taproom, cheese counter, and an outdoor area complete with food trucks. Now we have learned that this won't be happening after all.

According to a post from Eater Boston, plans for Mystic Brewery in Chelsea to move to Malden have fallen through, with the business apparently deciding to remain at its current space on Williams Street instead. In February of 2018, it looked like the brewery might be relocating to a new, larger facility on Charles Street in Malden, with the current space possibly being used for a new project from the people behind the business.

Mystic Brewery was established in 2011, with its taproom opening a couple of years later.

Mystic Brewery Plans to Open New Facility in Malden; Beer Hall, Cheese Counter, Outdoor Seating Planned for the Space

A local brewery is getting ready to expand to a new space, and it looks like it will include a taproom and an outdoor area.

According to an article in Boston Magazine, Mystic Brewery in Chelsea is opening a new, larger facility in Malden, with the 17,000-square-foot Charles Street space expected to include a brewhouse, beer hall, cheese counter, outdoor seating during the warmer months, and room for food trucks outside. It is not yet known exactly what will happen with the original space on Williams Street in Chelsea once the move takes place, though it is expected to remain in the hands of the brewery and could become home to a new project called Von Lüne Lagers.

If all goes as planned, Mystic Brewery's new facility could be up and running by later this year.

Idle Hands Craft Ales Brewery Finds New Home in Malden

The first nanobrewery to open in the Boston area has landed a new space after being kicked out of its previous home a few months ago.

Boston.com is reporting that Idle Hands Craft Ales has signed a lease to operate in Malden, with the Commercial Street space being more than three times larger than their original facility on Charlton Street in Everett. The article says that the new space will include a full tasting room and it might also have a setup where food trucks can be stationed outside the facility. If all goes as planned, Idle Hands could be up and running in its new home by the spring of 2016, according to boston.com.

Idle Hands was forced to leave its space in Everett in June in order to make room for a construction access road for the Wynn casino project.
