Spadafora Slush in Malden Has Closed

A decades-old business known in part for a regional treat has shut down.

According to multiple sources, Spadafora Slush in Malden is no longer in business, with a Facebook post from the Highland Avenue place confirming this, saying that it closed its doors as of August 31. The shop got its start more than 40 years ago as a convenience store in another space on Highland Avenue, becoming a slush and ice cream shop at its current location and selling a variety of slush flavors along with Richardson's ice cream.

The address for the now-closed Spadafora Slush was 136 Highland Avenue, Malden, MA, 02148.

Richie's Slush Is Returning to Everett

by Marc Hurwitz

A legendary slush shop that shut down last year is going to be opening back up again.

According to a source (Andrew MacLeod) on the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Richie's Slush is reopening its Everett shop, with a Facebook post from the business saying "I cannot thank all of you enough for your patience with us on opening the 2084 Revere Beach Parkway location. We are still working out a few more kinks before opening the doors. Our goal is to open when the weather is just right, as well as to prepare the employees to be the most professional and efficient workers for our customers!" Richie's, which has been around since 1956 and whose products can be found in a number of stores, mysteriously closed its Everett shop last spring after temporarily shutting down in 2015 as well; at the time of last year's closure, a voicemail stated that it was closed for renovations and would be reopening, though it remained shuttered through 2017.

[April 10 update: A Facebook post from the place indicates that Richie's Slush returns to its old space in Everett on Saturday, April 14. (Thanks to a poster on the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page for bringing this to our attention.)]

Richie's Slush in Everett Closed for Renovations; Exact Status Unknown

A couple of years ago, we reported that a legendary slush shop that has been in business for a long time had closed its doors only to reopen based on support from its customers. Now we have learned that it has closed again, and it is not known what the exact status of the place is at this point in time.

According to a Twitter post, Richie's Slush in Everett is "boarded up" and apparently work permits on the door, with a phone call placed to the Revere Beach Parkway shop going to voicemail that says it is closed for renovations and will be reopening. A check on the "find us" page within the Richie's website features the corporate office on nearby Garvey Street but does not feature the shop, though the shop is still included on the general map of where the slush can be found in the area.

In May of 2015, Richie's Slush shut down on Revere Beach Parkway with the place saying that "[Due] to unforeseen circumstances beyond our control, Richie's Store on the Parkway will not be opening this season. We apologize for this and hope you will purchase Richie's Italian Ice Products from one of our many other fine locations and retailers." The store quickly reopened, however, with the place saying that "Because of hard work and an overwhelming support from our customers," the shop would reopen.

As soon as we find out more about the status of the shop, we will post an update here.

Richie's Slush first started out in 1956.

The address for this slush shop in Everett is: Richie's Slush, 2084 Revere Beach Parkway, Everett, MA, 02149. Its website is at http://www.richiesslush.com/

[Ed note:  This article was updated on May 11 to reflect the fact that the shop has decided to reopen.]

Over the weekend, a legendary slush shop that has been in business for nearly 60 years announced that it had closed its doors. Now it is saying that it will reopen later this week.

According to a note on its website that was seen on Sunday, Richie's Slush on Revere Beach Parkway in Everett was shuttered, with the post saying that "[Due] to unforeseen circumstances beyond our control, Richie's Store on the Parkway will not be opening this season. We apologize for this and hope you will purchase Richie's Italian Ice Products from one of our many other fine locations and retailers." This afternoon, one of our readers tells us (via Twitter) that a new note has replaced the old one, saying that "Because of hard work and an overwhelming support from our customers. Richie's Original Store on the Parkway in Everett will RE-OPEN this Friday May 15th!...We have always appreciated and enjoyed serving you and also want to thank you for so many calls and entries in our blog page, plus all the social media comments to us on Facebook and Twitter, etc..."

Richie's Slush, which first started out in 1956, is known for its assortment of Italian ices, with such flavors as lemon, fudge, pineapple, grape, bubble gum, strawberry, cotton candy, mint chocolate, and many others offered. Their products can be found in a number of markets, including Roche Bros., Stop & Shop, and Star Market. [Note: A Facebook post from the business mentions that the retail shop and the wholesale business are under different management.]

The address for this slush shop in Everett is: Richie's Slush, 2084 Revere Beach Parkway, Everett, MA, 02149. Its website can be found at http://www.richiesslush.com/

Thanks to a reader for initially bringing Richie's closing to our attention, as well as the reader who mentioned its reopening.
