Katz's Delicatessen Considering a Possible Expansion to Boston

It looks like one of the best-known delis in the country could possibly come to Boston at some point.

According to an article in the Wall Street Journal, Katz's Delicatessen in Manhattan is getting ready to open an outpost of its Lower East Side deli in Brooklyn, with owner Jake Dell saying that he is considering opening an outlet in Boston as well, along with Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. The article mentions that Dell is also launching a worldwide shipping service of its menu items, a major expansion of what is currently a shipping service in the United States. (The service will include Canada and Mexico this year and will branch out to other countries starting in 2018.)

 Katz's Delicatessen, which has been in business since 1888, is known in part for its corned beef and pastrami which can take up to 30 days to cure. Its website can be found at http://www.katzsdelicatessen.com/

[May 11 update: The Boston Globe indicates that Katz's coming to Boston is by no means written in stone, as owner Jake Dell says that "I think it's a little premature. We don't have a location." But he does go on to say that "Boston would be a great market. It has a great burgeoning food scene, and there’s something wonderful about Boston. I went to school [Tufts] there for four years."]

Chloe Coscarelli, by CHLOE Part Ways; Name Change Possible

A New York-based group of vegan restaurants that recently expanded to Boston has cut ties with one of its founders, and it could result in a name change for the eateries.

Eater New York is reporting (via the Wall Street Journal) that Chloe Coscarelli and ESquared Hospitality have gone their own ways after a legal battle, and now Coscarelli is seeking to get her name taken out of the group of dining spots, saying that "I will protect the integrity of my brand." The relationship between Coscarelli and ESquared started to unravel last year, even as the group of restaurants expanded, including a new one that came to Boston's Seaport District last month. (Another new shop is being planned for the Fenway.)

Chloe Coscarelli is known in part for being the first vegan chef to win the Food Network's "Cupcake Wars."

News Elsewhere: Tavern on the Green in Manhattan Is Open Once Again

Four years after closing its doors, a Manhattan restaurant that was once the highest grossing dining spot in America has reopened, though it is apparently a much different spot from what it used to be.

The New York Post is reporting that Tavern on the Green is open for business again, with Jim Caiola and David Salama of the Emerald Green Group running the place and Katy Sparks heading up the kitchen. The article says that the space has been completely renovated, though only the interior rooms are open to diners for now, with the huge outdoor areas being at least a month away from being ready. The Post indicates that the new version of the dining spot features seasonal New American fare, with both small and large plates offered.

The original Tavern on the Green shut down at the end of 2009 after being in business since the 1930s, with the space actually turning into a visitor center and food court for awhile before becoming a restaurant once again. The dining spot sits at the western edge of Central Park near W 67th Street. in the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

News Elsewhere: The Stage Deli in New York Has Closed

A landmark delicatessen in New York City has decided to close its doors.

The New York Times is reporting that the Stage Deli on 7th Avenue in Midtown Manhattan shut down on Thursday after being in business for 75 years. Known in part for its huge sandwiches named after celebrities, the restaurant apparently closed because of business costs, including the expectation of another rent increase after several increases over recent years. Co-owner Paul Zolenge mentions in the article that someone could decide to purchase the deli's name, though for now, the eatery is shuttered.

The Stage Deli and the nearby Carnegie Deli fiercely competed for customers over the years, with the two spots being extremely popular among locals and tourists alike.

News Elsewhere: New York's Tavern on the Green to Become Visitors Center, Food Court

It looks like the space where a popular high-end restaurant in Manhattan's Central Park used to be will become something quite a bit different.

According to The Boston Globe, the former Tavern on the Green space will become a visitors center and food court. The article mentions that items such chili sesame noodle salad, Turkish tacos, and Chinese dumplings will be available at the food court, which will be in the space where Tavern on the Green's Crystal Room used to be. According to the Globe, the official unveiling of the new spot is planned for today.

Tavern on the Green was a landmark dining spot that first opened in the mid-1930s, eventually becoming the highest grossing dining spot in the country. The restaurant closed this past winter, and there had been talk of another eatery moving into the space, but plans for that apparently fell through.

The former Tavern on the Green space is located along the western edge of Central Park near W 66th Street and just east of Lincoln Center.
