Suko Cafe Opens in North Reading

A new cafe has opened in the northern suburbs of Boston.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Suko Cafe is now open in North Reading, moving into a space on Park Street on the eastern edge of the town center. A check on its website shows that the new eatery offers acai bowls, waffles, shakes, coffee, tea, and hot chocolate, and it is open for breakfast, lunch, and (an early dinner) daily.

Joe Fish in North Reading Has Closed

A pair of seafood restaurants north of Boston is now down to just one.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Joe Fish in North Reading is no longer in business, with a Facebook post from their other location in North Andover saying "The current economic landscape has not been conducive in supporting two locations of Joe Fish....Thank you North Reading for letting us serve you." The post mentions that gift cards for the North Reading location will be honored at both the North Andover location and at the Loft in North Andover.

Joe Fish first opened 12 years ago in North Reading.

Hopothecary Ales Is Opening Brewery in North Reading

A beermaker that is based in Wilmington is planning to open a brewery in a neighboring town, and it may also include a brewpub and/or taproom as well.

A message sent to us from a source (Cheryl Fenton) indicates that Hopothecary Ales is planning to open a brewery in North Reading, with an Instagram post from the business indicating that it is teaming up with the people behind several restaurants in the local area. The post says that "We are pleased to announce the signing of an agreement with the owners of Dos Lobos/Joe Fish/The Loft to bring our brewery to North Reading. Our partner has years of restaurant experience and this allows our brewery to have a full kitchen."

[November 17, 2021 update: According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Hopothecary Ales is on the verge of opening, with a Facebook post from the place saying that "We are going to do a few 'invite only' events at the brewery before we officially open. (That will be announced soon!!) We would like to extend an invitation to all industry (brewery or restaurant) staff on 11/23, 1st responders and educators on Wed 11/24, and health care workers on 11/26!" In addition, the website for the brewery--which will be located at 303 Main Street--says that the space will include a taproom, lounge, bar, restaurant, and beer garden.]

[December 6 update: According to its Facebook page, Hopothecary Ales is now open.]

The Centre Cafe in North Reading Closes, Could Be Moving to Wilmington

A restaurant north of Boston that focused on BBQ has closed, though it may reopen in another space in the region.

According to a post on its Facebook page, The Centre Cafe in North Reading has shut its doors after being in business for seven years, though it mentions that their "next journey" may lead them to Wilmington. The eatery offered a mix of classic American fare and barbecue, with such items as pancakes, French toast, burgers, steak tips, brisket, pulled pork, sausages, and macaroni and cheese served.

As soon as we find out whether the restaurant will indeed be moving to Wilmington (or elsewhere), we will post an update here.

Teresa's Prime and Teresa's Grille 19 Have Opened in North Reading

The owner of an Italian restaurant on the North Shore has opened a new steakhouse and a new bar and grill in a neighboring town.

According to one of our readers, both Teresa's Prime and Teresa's Grille 19 are now open in North Reading, joining the existing Teresa's Italian Eatery in Middleton (all of which are owned by Nick Yebba, Sr.). An article from the North Reading Patch mentions that both spots are located at the Thomson Country Club, and while the club itself is private, the restaurants are open to the public. Teresa's Prime is an upscale steakhouse with seafood dishes as well, while Teresa's Grille 19--which is located downstairs--is a bar and grill that offers a variety of comfort food dishes.

Great American Tavern Opening in North Reading

A new restaurant and watering hole is going to be opening north of Boston, and it looks like it will be an entertainment spot as well.

According to a job post on the Craigslist site, the Great American Tavern is planning to open on Main Street (Route 28) in North Reading, moving into the space where the Italian eatery Ristorante Daniela used to be until closing more than two years ago. The post mentions that the new restaurant will be a casual spot that features American cuisine, live music on weekends, weekly trivia nights, and two bar areas with a number of TVs. Private functions will also be available at the place, according to the post.

Expect a late February opening for the Great American Tavern, which looks to have a capacity of about 200.
