The Haven in Jamaica Plain Has Closed Its Perkins Street Location; Amory Street Location Will Be A Move

Last year it was reported that Boston's only Scottish restaurant was planning to open a second location, but now we have learned that this will be a move rather than an expansion.

According to a Facebook post from the business, The Haven in Jamaica Plain has closed its restaurant on Amory Street, saying the following:

It's the end of an era - and the beginning of a new one. ***We will open in the coming days (watch this space) at 284 Amory Street.*** As of [Wednesday, June 1], we CLOSE The Haven at 2 Perkins Street. Thank you for TWELVE YEARS of magic in that place. Can't wait to welcome you to our new spot very, very soon.

Back in April of 2021, we reported that The Haven was planning to open at the former Bella Luna/Milky Way space in the old Haffenreffer Brewery complex on Amory Street, and shortly after the announcement, it appeared that there could actually end up being two locations of The Haven if owner Jason Waddleton was able to get a new liquor license for the new spot.

The Haven in Jamaica Plain Is Looking to Move to the Former Bella Luna/Milky Way Space

It looks like Boston's only Scottish restaurant could be moving to an historic space nearby.

According to an article from Universal Hub, The Haven in the Hyde Square section of Jamaica Plain is planning to move to the former Bella Luna/Milky Way space in the old Haffenreffer Brewery complex on Amory Street, with the dining spot having both indoor and outdoor seating while also seeking to offer live entertainment. Owner Jason Waddleton is going to be talking about the proposal at a Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Council public-service committee this evening, so more should be known about the plans then.

Bella Luna and The Milky Way officially closed for good last June after being in the brewery space since 2009; previously, both had been located around the corner from where The Haven currently resides, with The Milky Way including bowling within that space.

Casa De Greek Plans to Replace Tilted Kilt in Billerica

It appears that a restaurant chain known by some as the "Scottish Hooters" has disappeared from the local landscape and that a Greek dining spot will apparently be taking over its last Boston-area space.

According to a source, a sign is up at the site of the Tilted Kilt Pub & Eatery space in Billerica saying that Casa De Greek is opening there, with a Yelp page appearing to confirm this. Very little is known about the upcoming Greek restaurant, and it is not known exactly when Tilted Kilt closed, so keep checking back for any updates that may come in.

Tilted Kilt first opened in Billerica in 2016, with another location opening in the Fenway section of Boston a year later, though that outlet closed in 2018. A Quincy location had once been looked at as well several years ago, but the city ultimately rejected that restaurant.

Tilted Kilt in Boston's Fenway Has Closed

A small chain of Celtic-themed sports bars has closed its sole Boston location after less than a year in business.

Eater Boston is reporting that Tilted Kilt in the Fenway is no longer in business, leaving only one left in all of Massachusetts (in Billerica), while another outlet that had tried to open in Quincy a few years ago was ultimately rejected by that city. The Las Vegas-based chain is known in part for its female servers who dress in revealing Scottish-style outfits (it is often called both a "Scottish Hooters" and a "breastaurant"), while offering pub grub and comfort food with Scottish, Irish, and British influences.

Tilted Kilt first opened on Brookline Avenue last February, taking over the space where Copperfield's had been.

Tilted Kilt's Plans to Open in Quincy Being Looked At by the City Once Again

A small chain of Celtic-themed sports pubs is looking to open its first Massachusetts location in Quincy, but a nearby church's concerns have brought the issue back to the city’s license board.

The Patriot Ledger is reporting that the pastor of St. John the Baptist Church at the corner of School Street and Gay Street has denounced the proposal to open the Tilted Kilt Pub & Eatery Plans on Parkingway. The article mentions that Section 16C of state law says a business that sells alcohol can't be situated within 500 feet of a school or church "unless the local licensing authority determines in writing and after a hearing that the premises are not detrimental to the educational and spiritual activities of said school or church." The space that the Tilted Kilt Pub & Eatery is looking at (which is where a branch of the Outback Steakhouse used to be) is 443 feet away from the church. The license board had previously voted unanimously in favor of granting the Tilted Kilt a license on July 17.

The Tilted Kilt Pub & Eatery, which started out in Las Vegas, is known in part for its having female servers who dress in revealing Scottish-style outfits. The chain currently operates more than 60 locations across the country, with the only New England outlet being in Wethersfield, CT. Their website can be found at http://www.tiltedkilt.com/

[August 29 update: The Patriot Ledger reports that the city's license board voted against the Tilted Kit opening in the former Outback Steakhouse site, with the vote (which occurred yesterday) being 3-2. The article does say that the restaurant chain can appeal the decision to the state Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission, or they can file a legal appeal in court, so stay tuned for more possible updates.]

The Haven Opens, Bringing Scottish Food and Drink to Jamaica Plain

It appears that a Scottish restaurant and pub may be coming to the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston. According to the Jamaica Plain Gazette, a place called the Wee Angel is looking to move into the Perkins Street space where the eclectic restaurant Zon's used to be before closing last year. At this point in time, the Wee Angel seems to be in the planning stages only, as the article mentions that the person behind the restaurant is hoping to get a malt and wine license over the coming days, with more steps in the opening process to follow.

In addition to Scottish food and drink, the Wee Angel may also end up having live music, according to the article in the Gazette.

[March 29, April 2 updates: According to Everyblock Boston, there is a name change for this upcoming restaurant, as a license withdrawal was made for Wee Angel, and a license for a place called The Haven was given for the same Perkins Street address. This name change has been confirmed by the creation of a Twitter page for The Haven.]

[June 24 update: The Haven is now open, and will debut their brunch this weekend along with soccer on the big screen.]
