South End Open Market at SoWa Is Moving to Ink Block

A popular open market in the South End of Boston is going to be moving to a new location.

According to a Facebook post from New England Open Markets, the South End Open Market at SoWa will be heading over to Ink Block in the spring of 2016, with the note saying that it "will provide a bigger and more enjoyable space for vendors and visitors in one central location." It appears that the food trucks, farmers market, and arts market will all be part of the move, though no other specific details have been give as of yet. (The New England Open Markets site says "Stay tuned for updates."

The Boston Globe gives more information on this story, stating that New England Open Markets owner Chris Masci will be moving the market to a temporary location between Harrison Avenue and Washington Street by the western edge of the Ink Block in 2016, with its permanent location being set up under the Route 93 deck by the complex's eastern edge in 2017. The article also says that Mario Nicosia, who owns the Harrison Avenue property where market is currently located, is looking to set up a "rival" market, and that Masci and Nicosia are in the middle of a conflict that includes lawsuits and trademark issues--and they have not talked to each other since last spring.]

Ink Block is located between Harrison Avenue and Albany Street in the South End, a few blocks north of the present location of the South End Open Market at SoWa. The web page for the market can be found at http://sowaboston.com/sowa-news/south-end-open-market-in-sowa/

Bone Daddy's Burgers Food Truck Is Up and Running Once Again

A food truck that focuses on burgers has returned to the area after briefly shutting down.

A visit to the SoWa food trucks yesterday indicated that Bone Daddy's Burgers is back in business, with a message from the Hub Food Trucks blog confirming this. It appears that at least for now, the truck has a shorter schedule, with their being set up at SoWa on Sundays and also at two locations in Watertown on other days--the Commander's Mansion by The Arsenal and the Central Rock Gym on Acton Street a bit west of the center of town.

In March, we had reported that Bone Daddy's Burgers was planning to call it a day after "a long struggle & a cold hard winter," but it looks like they received enough funding (including from the gofundme site) to stay in operation.

Bone Daddy's Burgers debuted in the spring of 2013, offering burgers as well as hot dogs, fries, and more. Information on the truck can be found at http://www.brothertrucker.biz/ and at https://www.facebook.com/bonedaddysburgers

SoWa Food Truck Court Will Be Open All Year Round

It looks like people will now be able to visit food trucks in Boston's South End all year long.

According to a post on the SoWa Open Market Facebook page, food trucks will be set up at SoWa through the rest of the fall and winter, with the trucks being set up inside the restored power station at 540 Harrison Avenue starting Sunday, November 11. Hours for the food trucks will be 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM each Sunday through April 28, when they will presumably return to their usual "warm-weather" space.

New Restaurants Coming to the Ink Block Development (and Surrounding Area) in the South End

An industrial section of the South End that is bordered by two highways is going to be the site of some major redevelopment, with at least a few restaurants being part of the plan.

The Boston Globe reports that the area just south of the Mass. Pike and west of the Central Artery/SE Expressway--including where the Boston Herald used to be--will soon see new residential properties, office space, and businesses (including dining spots) along with upgrades to roadways and sidewalks. A diagram of the area indicates that the restaurants will apparently be concentrated at the Herald Square site (dubbed the "Ink Block"), which is between Harrison Avenue and Albany Street, as well across the street between Harrison Avenue and Washington Street. One other dining spot may be located on Albany Street about one block south of Herald Square, and more eateries could be added to the area, though some of the plans are in the early stages.

Some of the project construction could begin this year, with much of the construction (including the Ink Block) likely beginning by next year, according to the Globe.

[May 18 update: The Boston Globe is reporting that the Ink Block project is one step closer to happening, as the Boston Redevelopment Authority’s Board has approved the plan for it.]

The Boston Herald now resides in the Seaport District.
