Kam Man Building in Boston's South Bay Is Being Demolished

An Asian supermarket just south of downtown Boston that was closed and then "sealed off" due to a dispute is in the process of being leveled.

According to a photo posted on LinkedIn, the Kam Man building at the South Bay shopping center is being demolished, though it is not known what exactly will be happening to the space. As reported earlier, a new open-air mixed-use development called South Bay Town Center is coming to the area, so it is possible that the Kam Man site will be included as part of the complex.

Kam Man closed its doors in April of 2014, with the store subsequently being blocked off from the rest of South Bay by jersey barriers, apparently because of an issue concerning the planned addition of a Dollar Tree store within the space. Another location of Kam Man in Quincy remains in operation.

The address for the Kam Man site in South Bay is 101 Allstate Road, Dorchester, MA, 02125.

South Bay Town Center Planned for Dorchester

It looks like an open-air mixed-use development might be on its way to an existing shopping area off the Expressway just south of downtown Boston.

Universal Hub is reporting that the owners of the South Bay shopping center in Dorchester have submitted plans to open South Bay Town Center, which would be an urban-style complex of the type that is ironically found in the suburbs these days, with the development being on the lines of Legacy Place in Dedham or Patriot Place in Foxboro. The post says that the 10-acre spot would be next to the current shopping center and would include restaurants, a hotel, boutique shops, a movie theater, and condos/apartments, with the open-air development replacing the old Kam Man/Super 88 Market, an empty warehouse, and a now-closed office building. The proposed South Bay Town Center would have 1,066 parking spaces that would mostly be hidden from view, along with sidewalks coming from Andrew station Red Line) and Newmarket station (Fairmount Line).

Plans for South Bay Town Center are in the early stages, as plans for the complex were filed with the BRA just this week.

The South Bay shopping center is located on Allstate Road between the Mass. Ave./Southampton Street and Columbia Road exits off the Southeast Expressway.

Update: Kam Man Market "Sealed Off" from South Bay Center

In April, we reported that an Asian supermarket just south of downtown Boston had apparently closed, with its status being unclear at the time. Now we have learned a bit more about what exactly is going on.

The Dorchester Reporter mentions that Kam Man has been "sealed off" from South Bay Center near the Southeast Expressway in Dorchester due to a dispute concerning the planned addition of a Dollar Tree store within the space. The article says that  E&A Northeast Limited Partnership, which owns the shopping center, has been against the market sharing its space with the store, and once signs went up for the Dollar Tree in late April, jersey barriers were set up at the entrance of the market's parking lot, which kept customers and delivery trucks from being able to get into the lot. The store is now closed and the dispute is heading to court, with a hearing taking place on June 23 in Suffolk Superior Court.

According to the article, the building in which Kam Man resides is not owned by E&A, but the market's sole access is by way of Allstate Road, which is mostly owned by the company. The post says that according to court documents, E&A agreed to allow the previous market in the space (Super 88) to use the access road in exchange for an annual sum over the course of a 20-year period, with the deal including "limiting the total area of the building and restricting certain commercial use within the building itself." Earlier this year, Kam Man told E&A about its plans, which was opposed by the company because they said it was in violation of the lease agreement that Kam Man assumed from Super 88. E&A then made an offer on the Kam Man building, but the offer was rejected and the barriers went up soon after the Dollar Tree signs were posted.

The address for Kam Man in South Bay is 101 Allstate Road, Dorchester, MA, 02125.

Kam Man in Boston's South Bay Has Closed; Status Unknown

It looks like an Asian supermarket just south of downtown Boston has closed, and it is not known whether it will be reopening.

A veteran Chowhound poster mentions that Kam Man at the South Bay shopping center is apparently shuttered, with the building being fenced off. A phone call placed to their store in Quincy seems to confirm this, with the person simply saying that it is "closed." There is chatter that a Dollar Tree could be moving into the space, possibly even sharing the building with a smaller Kam Man, though nothing has been confirmed as of yet.

Kam Man, which first started out in 1972, has stores in New York City and New Jersey, as well as in Quincy.

The address for Kam Man in South Bay is 101 Allstate Road, Dorchester, MA, 02125.

Kam Man Market to Open at South Bay in Boston

An Asian supermarket with one location in the Boston area is getting ready to open its second, and this one will be within a couple of minutes of downtown Boston.

According to posters on the Chowhound site, Kam Man will be opening at the South bay shopping center on the Dorchester/Roxbury line, which is just off the Southeast Expressway between the Mass. Ave. and Columbia Road exits. The latest post on Chowhound indicates that the New York-based Asian market is planning to open on Thursday, February 9, making it the second Kam Man in the Greater Boston area, with the other one being on Quincy Avenue in Quincy.

[February 8 update: According to The Boston Globe, The new Kam Man at South Bay is now planning to open this Saturday (February 11).]

The space that Kam Man is moving into used to be where a location of the Super 88 market resided. The new market at South Bay will feature similar products to the now-closed Super 88, with an array of Chinese, Japanese, Thai, and Vietnamese items. Based on the Quincy location of Kam Man, the South Bay shop may include hot prepared meals along with its grocery items.

The address for this upcoming market at South Bay will be: Kam Man, 101 Allstate Road, Dorchester, MA, 02125.
