T Market Plans to Open in the Former Wegmans Space at Natick Mall

It looks like a high-end Asian supermarket may be on its way to the western suburbs of Boston.

According to Kiat Cormier of the ChewOnThis Facebook group page (via a Natick Report article), T Market is planning to open at Natick Mall, taking over the space that had been home to a location of Wegmans until it closed in the summer of 2023 after five years in business. The Natick Report article mentions that the new market will have about 90,000 square feet of space and will include a food court with a number of Asian street food vendors.

The article states that T Market is currently in the planning and permitting stages, and if all goes well, it could be opening by the end of the year.

The website for T Market is at https://www.tmarketus.com/

C-Mart on Lincoln Street in Boston's Chinatown Has Apparently Closed for Good

It looks like an Asian market in the Chinatown neighborhood of Boston has closed its doors permanently.

According to a Twitter post from @FortPointer, C-Mart on Lincoln Street is shuttered and a source mentions that it "is not expected to re-open," with @JCCraves responding that it has indeed closed for good. An earlier tweet from @FortPointer last month had stated that the grocery store was locked up and with a sign posted out front, though a request for a translation of the sign was unsuccessful so it is not known exactly what the sign had said.

Another C-Mart on nearby Herald Street on the northern edge of the South End appears to remain in business; a third had once been in operation on Washington Street on the western edge of Chinatown, though that shop closed back in 2013. (Another location is still in operation in Quincy as well.)

The address for the now-closed location of C-Mart in Chinatown was 109 Lincoln Street, Boston, MA, 02111.

Seven Star Street Bistro in Roslindale Is Closing Indefinitely

An Asian street food spot that has been a favorite among locals and restaurant industry folks alike is shutting down.

According to a Facebook post from the place, Seven Star Street Bistro in Roslindale is closing "indefinitely," with the note saying that "We are hoping to have a couple weekends of service for Seven Star and Rozzie Ramen [two popups within the restaurant]. So we can wish our faithfuls a personal goodbye, and get them a last fix of Seven Star....I can walk away knowing I left it all on the cutting board. Excited for our next adventure, continuing my personal adventure, and continuing to make great food! Thank you from the bottom of my heart because you all granted this once in a lifetime opportunity!" It is not yet known what chef/owner Christopher Lin has planned next, nor is it known what might happen to the Seven Star space, so stay tuned.

Seven Star Street Bistro first opened in 2011, offering inventive takes on Chinese food and other Asian fare in a casual atmosphere. The eatery--combined with the Seven Star and Rozzie Ramen popups--has received much praise over the years, including boston.com listing it among the "best of the new" in 2011. The place is also known as the first restaurant in Boston to get a BYOB license, according to Universal Hub.

The address for Seven Star Street Bistro is 153 Belgrade Avenue, Roslindale, MA, 02131.

[June 28 update: A message sent from Christopher Lin indicates that Seven Star Street Bistro has officially closed, though the place is planning on being open for two or three weekends later this summer in order to say a final farewell to its customers.]

Kam Man Building in Boston's South Bay Is Being Demolished

An Asian supermarket just south of downtown Boston that was closed and then "sealed off" due to a dispute is in the process of being leveled.

According to a photo posted on LinkedIn, the Kam Man building at the South Bay shopping center is being demolished, though it is not known what exactly will be happening to the space. As reported earlier, a new open-air mixed-use development called South Bay Town Center is coming to the area, so it is possible that the Kam Man site will be included as part of the complex.

Kam Man closed its doors in April of 2014, with the store subsequently being blocked off from the rest of South Bay by jersey barriers, apparently because of an issue concerning the planned addition of a Dollar Tree store within the space. Another location of Kam Man in Quincy remains in operation.

The address for the Kam Man site in South Bay is 101 Allstate Road, Dorchester, MA, 02125.

Kam Man in Boston's South Bay Has Closed; Status Unknown

It looks like an Asian supermarket just south of downtown Boston has closed, and it is not known whether it will be reopening.

A veteran Chowhound poster mentions that Kam Man at the South Bay shopping center is apparently shuttered, with the building being fenced off. A phone call placed to their store in Quincy seems to confirm this, with the person simply saying that it is "closed." There is chatter that a Dollar Tree could be moving into the space, possibly even sharing the building with a smaller Kam Man, though nothing has been confirmed as of yet.

Kam Man, which first started out in 1972, has stores in New York City and New Jersey, as well as in Quincy.

The address for Kam Man in South Bay is 101 Allstate Road, Dorchester, MA, 02125.

New York Mart Opens in Quincy

A new Asian supermarket has opened in Quincy, taking over the space where a couple of other Asian grocery stores had been.

According to a Chowhound poster, New York Mart has opened at the former Thuan Dat site--it had previously been a Super 88 as well--in the Wollaston section of the city, though the temporary sign at the store apparently says "New York Marts" and there appears to be some confusion as to whether it is actually called "New York Mart" or "New York Marts" (see note below). It is also not known for certain if this market is connected to the New York Mart chain that can be found in New York City and other parts of the country; as soon as we find out more information, we will post an update here. (The Alternative Press says that there are approximately 10 such markets in the United States and calls it "New York Marts.")

The address for this new Asian grocery store in Quincy is: New York Mart, 733 Hancock Street, Quincy, MA, 02170.

C-Mart on Washington Street in Boston's Chinatown Has Closed

An Asian market in the Chinatown neighborhood of Boston has closed its doors, though the city's other two locations remain open.

The Boston Globe is reporting that C-Mart on Washington Street shuttered last week, with the market consolidating its operations at its nearby location on Herald Street, which is on the other side of the Mass. Pike just south of Chinatown in the South End. (Another C-Mart can be found on Lincoln Street, which is on the eastern edge of Chinatown.) The article says a spokesperson for the market mentioned that the lease for the Washington Street store was set to expire this summer, bringing them to the decision to close that location.

C-Mart stores can also be found in Georgia, Maryland, New York, and Virginia.

The address for this now-closed Asian market in Chinatown is: C-Mart, 692 Washington Street, Boston, MA, 02111.

H Mart Is Opening in Cambridge's Central Square

An Asian supermarket chain that has one location in the Boston area is going to be opening a second store in the region.

The centralsquare.com blog reports that H Mart plans to open a location on Mass. Ave. in Cambridge's Central Square, taking over the space where the Harvest Co-op and Clear Conscience Cafe currently reside. The article mentions that renovations will begin on the 18,000-square-foot space this September, with construction taking about a half year. Once it opens, the new H Mart will join another Boston-area location that is on Old Concord Road in Burlington, a short distance south of Route 128 and the Burlington Mall.

[May 22, 2013 update: Cambridge Day states that H Mart will probably not open in Central Square until the winter because the store and landlord apparently did not let Nstar know it was going to be opening, and the power supplied by the existing infrastructure is not enough for what is needed by H Mart. (Thanks to Eater Boston for bringing this to our attention.)]

[July 9, 2013 update: A page showing the details of tonight's License Commission General Hearing in Cambridge indicates that three eateries are applying for common victualer licenses to operate at the upcoming H Mart in Central Square, including Sapporo Ramen Central, Go Go Curry, and Paris Baguette. (H Mart itself appears to be applying for a common victualer license as well.)]

[November 18 update: Eater Boston mentions that the new H Mart that is coming to Central Square won't be opening until January 2014 at the very earliest, with the Japanese-American in Boston site indicating that the spring of 2014 may be a reasonable estimate, based on construction and the permitting process.]

[April 7, 2014 update: A new article in Eater Boston states (via Chowhound) that the new H Mart in Cambridge is opening on April 23.]

The Harvest Co-op grocery store moves across the street to a smaller space, while it appears that Clear Conscience Cafe is closing for good.

The address for the new H Mart in Central Square is 579-581 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge,. MA, 02139. The website for the chain can be found at http://www.hmart.com/

Bon Appetit Includes Boston's Staff Meal in Its Venn Diagram of Food Trucks

A popular food magazine has just posted a "Venn diagram" of food trucks, focusing on "strange creations of our nation's freewheeling kitchens," and a Boston truck has been included in the diagram.

The Venn diagram within the Bon Appetit site features Staff Meal at the point where "Asian" and "tacos" intersect, displaying a photo of their chinese sausage and fried rice taco. This is one of a few types of tacos offered by the truck, with others being chorizo, chicken paprikash, and beef barbacoa.

A few other food trucks included in Bon Appetit's Venn diagram include Lucky J's in Austin, TX (who combine waffles with tacos), the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck in New York (who combine sweet flavors with sandwiches), and Marination Mobile in Seattle (who combine Asian food with cheese).

The website for Staff Meal can be found at http://www.staffmealboston.com/

An Asian supermarket with one location in the Boston area is getting ready to open its second, and this one will be within a couple of minutes of downtown Boston.

According to posters on the Chowhound site, Kam Man will be opening at the South bay shopping center on the Dorchester/Roxbury line, which is just off the Southeast Expressway between the Mass. Ave. and Columbia Road exits. The latest post on Chowhound indicates that the New York-based Asian market is planning to open on Thursday, February 9, making it the second Kam Man in the Greater Boston area, with the other one being on Quincy Avenue in Quincy.

[February 8 update: According to The Boston Globe, The new Kam Man at South Bay is now planning to open this Saturday (February 11).]

The space that Kam Man is moving into used to be where a location of the Super 88 market resided. Based on the Quincy location of Kam Man, the South Bay shop may include hot prepared meals along with its grocery items.
