The Dial and the Blue Owl at 907 Main in Cambridge's Central Square Have Closed; Future of Places Unknown

A restaurant and a bar in Cambridge that are located on the ground floor and the top floor of a boutique hotel are closed for now, and it isn't known what may become of either of them.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, The Dial at 907 Main Central Square is shuttered for at least the time being with a note on both its website and the website for the Blue Owl saying that they will be "closed for the winter of 2024" while also saying "big things coming soon!" As soon as we find out more, including whether one or more new concepts may be coming to the spaces or whether The Dial and/or the Blue Owl could open back up, we will post an update here, so stay tuned.

The Dial first opened in 2020 while the Blue Owl debuted in the following year; the website for the former is at https://www.thedialcentralsq.com/ while the website for the latter is at https://www.blueowlcentralsq.com/

According to multiple sources, the closing of The Dial and the Blue Owl appear to be permanent, with an Instagram post from The Dial seeming to confirm this, saying the following: "It is with a heavy heart that we have to announce the permanent closing of The Dial and The Blue Owl. We thank you all for being part of The Dial and Blue Owl community and a part of the diverse neighborhood that gives Central Square it's unique energy. Together we celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, promotions, pride months and return to office cocktails; whatever the occasion we were grateful that you chose to spend it here with us."]

Artifact Cider Project Is Closing The Station in Central Square in Cambridge

A craft cider company that is based in Western Massachusetts is shutting down its Cambridge taproom.

According to a source, Artifact Cider Project is closing The Station in Central Square on May 31, with a boston.com article quoting co-founder Soham Bhatt as saying that "Even though things were on the up and up… it just became untenable, from a financial point of view, after two years of the pandemic." An Instagram post from the business gives further details on the decision:

It has been the fulfillment of a lifelong dream to be able to share our ciders with the world on this iconic stretch of Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge. Unfortunately, the timing was just not in our favor, with construction wrapping up in the Spring of 2020 and a slotted opening at the start of the global pandemic....Our world changed, and while things have built back into a new normal, our project on Mass Ave is heartbreaking collateral damage....We will be shifting our focus back to our distribution and cidermaking so we can continue to deliver our thoughtful, terroir-inspired ciders to folks at their local shops or favorite watering holes.

Artifact Cider Project started out in 2014 in a garage in Springfield, moving to Everett three years later before moving to its current home in Florence where it has a production cellar, retail area, and taproom.

ManRay Returns to Cambridge's Central Square January 18

After being in the works for ten years, a legendary Cambridge nightclub is finally getting ready to be reborn.

According to an article from Vanyaland, ManRay is slated to open in Central Square on January 18, and as mentioned here in an earlier article, it will be moving into the old ImprovBoston comedy club space on Prospect Street. The original ManRay, which previously resided on nearby Brookline Street, first opened in 1985, being an "underground" place that featured themed nights along with goth and new wave bands and more; it closed in 2005, though in 2013 there was talk about it returning to the neighborhood, and in 2021, it was learned that the place would indeed be coming back in a new space.

Vanyaland says that the new incarnation of ManRay will continue on as an alternative underground spot with DJs, occasional live music, and weekly themed nights including goth parties on Wednesdays, gay nights on Thursdays, fetish-themed industrial nights on Fridays, and electro and new wave parties on Saturdays.

Hotel Proposed for Middle East Space in Cambridge's Central Square

The exact future of one of the region's best-known music complexes continues to be unknown, especially based on a new proposal now on the table that mentions the potential tearing down of the building.

According to an article from Cambridge Day (via a Cambridge Historical Commission Meeting notice), The Sater family--who own The Middle East along with the property itself--have put out a plan that would demolish the Mass. Ave. structure and replace it with a six-story hotel that would have two stages for live entertainment. A blueprint posted shows that the basement has a section labeled "Middle East Music Venue" while the first floor has a section simply labeled "Music Venue," and the first floor also shows three spaces for retail while the 6th floor has a restaurant/bar space. Cambridge Day mentions that there is a request to postpone the September 8 meeting which could mean that the proposal might not be heard until next month at the earliest, as the next commission meeting is slated to take place on October 6.

Nabil and Joseph Sater, who purchased The Middle East in 2014, put the site up for sale in early 2020, though the listing was ultimately taken down and no sale took place.

[September 19 update: A Facebook post from the place indicates that The Middle East apparently won't be going anywhere, with the note saying that "Over the coming months, we and our team will present a plan to improve the Middle East, in cooperation with CSQ Realty, to include a two stage music venue, a modernized restaurant and event space, and a lounge, as well as a hotel and retail space....The Middle East plans to remain open until such time as the planned renovations are to take place, which we currently expect to occur no earlier than 2024. While there may be a short interruption during the redevelopment of the space, rest assured that the Middle East will remain the venue that our customers, performers, friends, and neighbors have come to love for years and decades to come."]

Toscanini's Ice Cream Is Reopening in Cambridge's Central Square on January 1, 2022

A popular ice cream shop in Cambridge that has been closed for nearly four years is on the verge of returning to its space.

According to a couple of sources, Toscanini's is reopening in its old space on the eastern edge of Central Square on January 1, with a Facebook post from the Main Street shop saying that it will be the "same beloved space, same small batch ice cream.. but this time with a selfie wall. There's no better way to kick off 2022 than with a cone or cup in hand.. especially where it all began! Thank you to our community [whose] loyalty and love for Toscanini's made this possible. We love you all and look forward to serving you for many years to come."

Toscanini's closed its original location in early 2018, as its building was being turned into a boutique hotel called 907 Main that is now open--and home to two dining spots called The Dial and The Blue Owl. A second location of the ice cream shop opened on First Street in East Cambridge around the time that the Central Square location shut down.

Moge Tee Is Opening in Cambridge's Central Square

A chain of tea places with two locations in the Boston area is getting ready to open a third.

According to a source (Geoff Wong), Moge Tee is planning to open in the Central Square section of Cambridge, with a check on the website for the company indicating that it will be opening on Mass. Ave. in the heart of the square. Once it opens, the new shop will join other locations in Allston and North Quincy, along with outlets in Amherst, the New York City area and a handful of others in various states around the country.

Moge Tee offers cheese foam tea, fruit tea, milk tea, tofu pudding, yogurt fruit tea, uji matcha, and more.

ManRay Plans to Open in Former ImprovBoston Space in Cambridge's Central Square

Nearly ten years ago, it was reported that a legendary nightclub could be coming back to Cambridge, and now we have learned that it finally appears to be happening.

According to an article from Cambridge Day, ManRay is planning to open in the old ImprovBoston comedy club space on Prospect Street in Central Square (the Improv is now doing shows at The Starlight Square stage in Central Square and The Rockwell in Somerville's Davis Square), with the space currently being under construction--and an alcohol pouring license was awarded for ManRay this week. The post says that if all goes as planned, ManRay could debut in the middle of October.

Back in early 2013, we had mentioned here that ManRay was eyeing the old Blockbuster space on Mass. Ave., and that the new version of the club would be much smaller than the original while serving food as well as drinks, though these plans ultimately fell through. The club first opened in 1985, being an "underground" place that featured goth and new wave bands. (It closed down in the summer of 2005.)

The Cantab Lounge in Cambridge's Central Square Is Reopening Under New Ownership

Last summer, it was reported that a landmark bar and music club in Cambridge was up for sale, and now we have learned that a new owner is indeed seeking to open the place back up.

According to a Cambridge License Commission page, a transfer of the liquor license for The Cantab Lounge in Central Square is in the works, with Richard "Fitzy" Fitzgerald and parent company Crystal Lunch, Inc. looking to transfer the license to Dancing in the Dark, LLC, with Michael Cronin being the proposed manager. In an earlier article here from last July, Fitzgerald mentioned that the club was going on the market, though no details on a prospective owner had been given at the time; Fitzgerald said that "After 50 years of good times and good friends I have made the decision to put The Cantab Lounge up for sale....The Cantab is currently closed, due to the governor's order that all bars will remain closed until a vaccine or credible treatment has been identified. We look forward to opening just as soon as it is safe to do so."

The Cantab was once known for being home to legendary R&B group Little Joe & The Thrillers. Its address is 738 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, MA, 02139.

[June 9 update: A new article from Cambridge Day indicates that the city has given its approval for The Cantab to reopen under new ownership, with former Cambridge resident Tim Dibble, (who is a partner in a private equity firm) being the new owner and--as mentioned earlier--Michael Cronin (Tony C's, Jillian's) being the manager. The post mentions that the space needs renovations which could take a couple of months, though the plan is to have The Cantab remain a center for music and the arts; one of the next steps for the club is for the state's Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission to give its approval for the liquor license.]

[October 25 update: Cambridge Day states that The Cantab plans to reopen on December 2, though the Boston Poetry Slam won't be returning there.]

Daily Table Is Opening New Location in Cambridge's Central Square

A nonprofit community grocer that helps provide food to those in need is expanding to a third Boston-area location.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Daily Table is opening in the Central Square section of Cambridge, with an Instagram post saying that it hopes to debut in its Mass. Ave. space in January. Based on the two locations of the market in Dorchester and Roxbury, expect the new store to offer fresh produce, everyday grocery items and scratch-made prepared foods--all at reasonable prices--while also paying living wages and focusing on hiring workers from the neighborhood.

Artifact Cider Project Opens The Station Taproom in Cambridge's Central Square

Earlier this year, it was reported that a craft cider company that has bounced around a bit was coming back to the Boston area once again with a brand new taproom on the way. Now we have learned that it has very quietly opened its doors.

According to a source, Artifact Cider Project opens The Station in the Central Square section of Cambridge today at 4:00 PM, taking over the former Economy Hardware space on Mass. Ave. between Brookline Street and Sidney Street. The new place joins their taproom, production cellar and retail area in Florence called "The Cellar," which became the company's new home after starting out in a garage in Springfield in 2014, than moving to a facility in Everett three years later before heading back west.

The Cantab Lounge in Cambridge's Central Square Is Up for Sale

The future of an iconic bar and music club in Cambridge appears to be in doubt.

According to multiple sources and posters on social media (including several local musicians), The Cantab Lounge in Central Square is on the market, with a few people saying that an email went out to them over the weekend about a potential sale of the Mass. Ave. spot. Adam Gaffin of Universal Hub initially told us about this yesterday evening, while also posting that "Word is spreading like wildfire...that the Cantab Lounge in Cambridge is closing for good." Adam also told us about a Boston Poetry Slam post saying that "Word went out that our home venue, the beloved and oft-fondly-maligned Cantab Lounge, will not reopen. The business is expected to be announced for sale." We have reached out to the place for more details and are waiting to hear back from them, so keep checking back for updates.

As mentioned here in an earlier article, the downstairs part of The Cantab (Club Bohemia) had shut down in September of 2018, though it reopened a few months later. The Cantab itself was once known for being home to legendary R&B group Little Joe & The Thrillers.

Artifact Cider Project to Open Taproom in Cambridge's Central Square

A craft cider company that got its start in Western Massachusetts then moved to the Boston area before moving back to the western part of the state is returning to the Boston area once again.

According to an article from Boston Magazine, Artifact Cider Project is planning to open a taproom in an as-of-yet undisclosed space in the Central Square area of Cambridge, joining its taproom in Florence. The business started out in 2014 with its first home being in a garage in Springfield, with the company moving to Everett three years later before moving to its current home in Florence where it has a production cellar and retail area along with its taproom.

The article indicates that production of Artifact's ciders will continue to be done in Florence, and that the Cambridge taproom could offer snacks in addition to cider, though the exact plans for the taproom--which hopes to open this spring--are still in the works.

Club Bohemia in Cambridge's Central Square Has Returned

An iconic music club in Cambridge that shut down a few months ago is back in business.

According to musician and radio host/consultant Michael Scott Stewart, Club Bohemia has returned to its space in the basement of The Cantab Lounge in Central Square, with Cambridge Day confirming this (via a press release on Facebook), saying that the computer DJ format that The Cantab had replaced it with was not doing well, according to club manager Mickey Bliss. As of now, Club Bohemia is slated to have shows Thursday through Saturday and is currently looking to fill open dates.

Club Bohemia, which shut down in early September, has featured many local and regional acts over the years, while the Cantab itself was once known for being home to legendary R&B group Little Joe & The Thrillers.

Club Bohemia in Cambridge's Central Square to Close

It looks like another iconic music club is shutting down.

Vanyaland is reporting that Club Bohemia, which is located in the basement of The Cantab Lounge in Cambridge's Central Square, is closing on September 2, with the website for the place stating that its final show is September 1--and also mentioning that The Cantab will remain in operation. No reason has been given for the closure of the club at this point in time, and a post on its Facebook page discusses starting an online petition to save the place, so stay tuned for any updates as they come in.

Club Bohemia has featured many local and regional acts over the years, while the Cantab itself was once known for being home to Little Joe & The Thrillers, an R&B group that played there countless times (Cook passed away in 2014).

T.T. the Bear's Place in Cambridge to Close for Good July 25

[Ed note: This article was updated on May 18 to reflect confirmation that the place is closing.]

It looks like the days are numbered for a legendary Cambridge music club that has been around for more than 25 years.

According to several credible sources, T.T. the Bear's Place on Brookline Street is apparently closing, with two of the sources indicating that this is definite. A note sent to the club this week was read but not answered, while a note sent to The Middle East club--which owns the building in which T.T. resides--was answered simply with a "No Comment." The chatter is that T.T. the Bear's could be closing in July, and a check on the events page for the club shows that the calendar of events does stop at the end of that month. An article from Vanyaland gives more information, saying that the club will reportedly close this summer and that some type of last-minute deal on the space between the owners of The Middle East and the owner of the former ManRay nightclub in Central Square didn't work out.

Earlier it had been reported here that The Middle East had purchased the building in which it and T.T. the Bear's are housed, with possible plans being to add several floors of residential space above the ground floor; it is not known whether this is still on the table, and if it is, whether this has something to do with the possibility of T.T.'s closing.

[May 16 update: The Boston Globe is reporting that the end appears near for T.T. the Bear's, as Joseph Sater, who is co-owner of the building, says of T.T.'s owner Bonney Bouley, "I don't want to put words in her mouth, but she just doesn't want to do it anymore....She's saying she'll be out by the end of July."]

[May 18 update: A new post from Vanyaland indicates that July 25 will be the last night for T.T. the Bear's.]

[June 9 update: A new article in The Boston Globe mentions (via a Facebook event page) that T.T. the Bear's is having what is basically an indoor "yard sale" on Saturday, June 20 from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM, with the club selling off a variety of memorabilia/bric-a-brac such as old posters, beer taps, chairs, signs, dishes, and more.]

[July 12 update: Vanyaland mentions that the last week for T.T. the Bear's will be a "blowout" week, with such acts as Evan Dando of the Lemonheads, O Positive, the Neighborhoods, Scruffy The Cat, and others on the way.]

T.T. the Bear's Place first started out in the late 1980s, featuring countless local, national, and international acts over the years, featuring indie rock, punk, pop, jazz, electronica, funk, and much more.

H Mart Is Opening in Cambridge's Central Square

An Asian supermarket chain that has one location in the Boston area is going to be opening a second store in the region.

The centralsquare.com blog reports that H Mart plans to open a location on Mass. Ave. in Cambridge's Central Square, taking over the space where the Harvest Co-op and Clear Conscience Cafe currently reside. The article mentions that renovations will begin on the 18,000-square-foot space this September, with construction taking about a half year. Once it opens, the new H Mart will join another Boston-area location that is on Old Concord Road in Burlington, a short distance south of Route 128 and the Burlington Mall.

[May 22, 2013 update: Cambridge Day states that H Mart will probably not open in Central Square until the winter because the store and landlord apparently did not let Nstar know it was going to be opening, and the power supplied by the existing infrastructure is not enough for what is needed by H Mart. [July 9, 2013 update: A page showing the details of tonight's License Commission General Hearing in Cambridge indicates that three eateries are applying for common victualer licenses to operate at the upcoming H Mart in Central Square, including Sapporo Ramen Central, Go Go Curry, and Paris Baguette. (H Mart itself appears to be applying for a common victualer license as well.)]

[November 18 update: Eater Boston mentions that the new H Mart that is coming to Central Square won't be opening until January 2014 at the very earliest, with the Japanese-American in Boston site indicating that the spring of 2014 may be a reasonable estimate, based on construction and the permitting process.]

The Harvest Co-op grocery store moves across the street to a smaller space, while it appears that Clear Conscience Cafe is closing for good.
