Party Favors in Brookline Has Closed

A decades-old bakery in Brookline that was known for its cakes has shut down.

According to its Instagram page, Party Favors in Coolidge Corner is now closed, with the last day in operation for the Beacon Street shop being yesterday. There had an earlier note on its website saying "The news is true, after 35 years we are closing our doors. It has been a pleasure to serve you, and to be a part of your celebrations." while a Brookline News article quoted co-owner John Pergantis as saying that "There's no walking traffic anymore. People are still ordering stuff online. The cake business is great, but we can' t keep it going on just cakes without some other revenue coming in." Co-owner Mary Lynn Pergantis also states that "I don’t think people quite understand the volume of business it takes to pay the bills as a retailer....We really don't need this kind of space anymore, and we really can't justify paying the rent to be in this kind of space anymore."

The article does mention that the business could be reborn in a smaller space, with Mary Lynn saying that "Hopefully we can find something smaller and kind of work it a little differently and build it up and then be able to retire."

The address for the now-closed Party Favors was 1356 Beacon Street, Brookline, MA, 02446.

A specialty cheese shop is going to be closing its doors.

According to a source, Curds & Co. in Brookline Village is shutting down, with a note on the website for the Washington Street shop saying the following:

The Curds&co team will celebrate 8 years of bringing great cheese and happiness to Brookline with one big month of thanks and celebration before closing our doors on Friday, September 12th. It was our hope and dream to keep our fab team of cheese mongers slinging the Swiss and pouring the sauv blanc. Unfortunately, our search a new owner has not been successful....These 8 years have been amazing and you all have been some of the greatest humans I've ever known. You are what will be missed most in our little hamlet of cheesedom.

Curds & Co. first opened in the summer of 2017, being known for its variety of cheese and charcuterie options along with its weekly "cheese school" classes.

The address for Curds & Co. is 288 Washington Street, Brookline, MA, 02445. Its website is at https://curdsandco.com/

The Butcherie in Brookline to Temporarily Move into Rubin's Space

A kosher grocery store in Brookline that remains closed after being hit by a fire is moving into a new home for a little while, and it will be taking over the space where a landmark deli had been until recently.

Universal Hub is reporting (via a Facebook post) that The Butcherie on Harvard Street will be moving into the Rubin's space--which is also on Harvard Street--starting today and remaining there through the end of August, with the people behind the market offering meat, dairy, challah, and pastries to customers. The post shows the grocery store thinking Cafe Eilat and Catering by Andrew for helping them get through the past few weeks by allowing the market to sell some of its goods at both places. (It is still not known when The Butcherie will able to move back into its home, which was damaged in a blaze last month.)

Earlier, we had reported that Rubin's--which closed earlier this month after being in business for 90 years--could be reopening, as the new owner of the property has been working with potential operators to bring back the deli.

The address for the Rubin's space is 500 Harvard Street, while the address for The Butcherie is 428 Harvard Street.
