Sul Tavolo in Sudbury Has Closed

An Italian restaurant in the western suburbs of Boston has closed after only a few months in operation.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Sul Tavolo in Sudbury is no longer in business, with a Facebook post from the Hudson Road spot saying "Thank you for your loyal support over the years. It's been an honor to serve you. As of [yesterday], we are permanently closed." The restaurant first opened in January of this year, replacing a Mexican spot called Sobre Mesa that was under the same ownership, and previous to that, the space was home to 29 Rustic Mediterranean which also had the same ownership. (A popup version of Sul Tavolo briefly resided at the site in 2023.)

The people behind Sul Tavolo also run Nan's Kitchen, which can be found in Stow, Southborough, and Westford, with a new one soon opening in Andover.

The address for the now-closed Sul Tavolo was 29 Hudson Road, Sudbury, MA, 01776.

Acapulcos in Sudbury Is Closed Until Further Notice; Space Now for Sale/Lease

The future of one a location of a local group of Mexican restaurants appears to be in question.

According to a source, a sign posted out front at Acapulcos in Sudbury says that the Boston Post Road spot "will be closed for remodeling until further notice," while a sign in front of the property says "For Sale or Lease." The web page for the Sudbury outlet hints that the restaurant could be returning, as it says that "We are temporarily closed due to maintenance and repairs. Please check back in for updates on our reopening. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience." As soon as we find out more about the exact status of the dining spot, we will post an update here.

Other locations of Acapulcos in Beverly, Franklin, Milford, Norwood, Quincy, and Enfield and Stratford, CT, remain in operation.

The address for the Sudbury location of Acapulcos is 694 Boston Post Road (Route 20), Sudbury, MA, 01776. The website for all of the locations can be found at https://acapulcos.net/

[August 13 update: An article from Wicked Local mentions that a substantial amount of work needs to be done to the Acapulcos space in Sudbury in order to get it up to code, and while it is possible that the restaurant could reopen if the fixes are made, the owner of the building put up the "For Sale or Lease" sign to see if a new restaurant might be interested in the space (the article says that it is also possible that a new owner or developer could do something else with the space instead).]

Sobre Mesa Is Opening in the Former 29 Rustic Mediterranean Space in Sudbury

A brand new Mexican restaurant is on its way to the western suburbs, and it will be replacing a Mediterranean spot in what looks to be a rebranding.

According to its social media pages, Sobre Mesa is going to be opening in Sudbury, taking over the former 29 Rustic space on Hudson Road. Based on the posts (including a job post), the new place will be an upscale Mexican restaurant, and both a Facebook comment and a source mention that it has a connection to Nan's Rustic Kitchen & Market, which opened in Stow last fall and which is under the same ownership as 29 Rustic, making this a reconcepting of sorts. If all goes as planned, Sobre Mesa hopes to open a bit later this summer.

29 Rustic first opened in the spring of 2019, taking over the space that had been home to 29 Sudbury.

The address for Sobre Mesa is 29 Hudson Road, Sudbury, MA, 01776. Its Instagram page can be found at https://www.instagram.com/sobre_mesa_bar/

29 Rustic Mediterranean Opens in Sudbury

Last year, a suburban restaurant that had a local radio personality behind it had shut down, and earlier this year it was reported that the place would morph into a new spot under different ownership. Now we have learned that the new restaurant has opened.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, 29 Rustic Mediterranean is now open in Sudbury, taking over the space on Hudson Road where 29 Sudbury had been. The new dining spot features "mindfully crafted Mediterranean comfort food for the whole family," including such options as wood-roasted olives and almonds, Moroccan shrimp, crisp calamari, pizzettes, pasta dishes, ribeye steak, pork chops, swordfish steak, a French vegetable stew, burgers, and macaroni and cheese.

In April of 2018, Whole House Group, which was founded by Chris Stephans and WAAF radio host Greg Hill, sold both 29 Sudbury and Flank in Waltham, with the latter shutting down and being replaced by a steakhouse called The Federal.

The address for 29 Rustic Mediterranean is 29 Hudson Road, Sudbury, MA, 01776. Its website can be found at https://www.rustic29.com/

Update: 29 Sudbury to Reopen as 29 Rustic Mediterranean

by Marc Hurwitz

[Ed note: This article was updated on March 1 to reflect a new name given for the place.]

This spring, we reported that a suburban restaurant that had a local radio personality behind it was sold and subsequently closed for renovations but never reopened. Now we have learned that it may be opening back up again.

According to an article from the Sudbury Town Crier, Jordan Mackey, who had been corporate executive of Whole House Group, is hoping to reopen 29 Sudbury, working on a lease with the landlord and attempting to raise funds to help pay for the lease. If all goes well and the Hudson Road dining spot does open up again, Mackey plans to offer a menu that keeps the Mediterranean influences of the former place (though with "flexible options for people" as well) while also adding a new wood grill, more patio seating, and a space for cooking classes in the basement.

Whole House Group, which was founded by Chris Stephans and WAAF radio host Greg Hill, sold both 29 Sudbury and Flank in Waltham in April, with the latter shutting down and being replaced by The Federal, a soon-to-open steakhouse.

The address for 29 Sudbury is 29 Hudson Road, Sudbury, MA, 01776.

[March 5 update: According to its Facebook page, 29 Sudbury will become 29 Rustic Mediterranean, with the page saying that it will feature "mindfully crafted Mediterranean comfort food for the whole family." In addition, a Craigslist job post states that the restaurant plans to open on May 1.]

Max and Leo's Opening in Former Sierra's Space in Sudbury

by Marc Hurwitz

A pair of coal-fired pizza spots will be opening a third location, with this one moving into the space where a Mexican restaurant had been before closing due to financial issues.

According to a source, Max and Leo's is opening in Sudbury, taking over the old Sierra's space on Route 117, with confirmation of this seeming to come from an old Facebook post from the place. Once it opens, the new location of the dining spot will join others in Newton Corner and in Boston's Fenway; it isn't yet known when it might open, so stay tuned for updates.

Sierra's was a Mexican eatery that went through a troubled stretch during its final years in business, temporarily closing in April of 2013, then reopening before closing once again in August of 2014, two months after we reported that it was going through financial difficulties and asked the town for more time to pay off its debt. A new restaurant from the Sierra's owners called Erica's Italian Table was looking to open in the space, but plans for that apparently fell through.

The address for the new location of Max and Leo's in Sudbury is 470 North Road (Route 117), Sudbury, MA, 01776.

[December 20 update: According to a poster on the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Max and Leo's is now open in Sudbury, with a post from the place confirming this.]

A small but growing Texas-based burger chain is planning to open another location in the Greater Boston area, with this one being in the western suburbs.

According to a source, Mooyah Burgers, Fries and Shakes is opening in Sudbury, with the locations section within the company's website confirming this, showing that it will be opening within the Meadow Walk complex on Route 20. Once it opens, the new location of Mooyah will join others in downtown Boston, Jamaica Plain, Billerica, Hudson, and Northborough. [Ed note--the Jamaica Plain location has closed.]

Mooyah, which was established in 2006, offers "never-frozen beef" as well as salads, hand-cut fries, and ice cream milkshakes

The address for this new location of Mooyah Burgers, Fries and Shakes is 526C Boston Post Road, Sudbury, MA, 01776. Its website can be found at http://www.mooyah.com/

Greg Hill's Whole House Group Is Selling Flank, 29 Sudbury

by Marc Hurwitz

It looks like a local radio personality is going to be selling two of his restaurants.

According to a couple of sources, Flank in Waltham and 29 Sudbury in Sudbury are being sold, with Greg Hill's Whole House Group selling both spots to AB Hospitality Group pending approval of license transfers. One source tells us that Flank will close immediately and is expected to reopen with an updated concept after minor renovations are made, while 29 Sudbury will remain open with AB Hospitality Group taking over operations next month. Both the Battle Road Brewery and Brew House in Maynard will remain part of Hill's Whole House Group, according to one of the sources. A Facebook post from Flank confirms all of this information and says "It has been a pleasure serving each and every one of you over the last two years. Thank you all for your patronage! We look forward to serving you again soon."

In addition to his restaurants and brewery, Greg Hill also heads up the morning show on WAAF.

Richard Bracket, who is one of the people involved with AB Hospitality Group, comes from The Bancroft, a pair of steakhouses in Burlington and Peabody.

[April 23 update: The Waltham News Tribune confirms that Flank has been sold and it is now closed for renovations--and its website is now down.]

[August 1 update: A check on the place indicates that 29 Sudbury is now closed as well.]

A Worcester gastropub that features bourbon, beer, burgers, and more is on its way to the western suburbs of Boston.

The Sudbury Town Crier is reporting that the Oak Barrel Tavern on Grove Street is opening a second location on Route 20 in Sudbury, with the dining and drinking spot having a rustic theme and catering more to a lunch and dinner crowd than a late-night crowd. It looks like the new place will be open for lunch and dinner seven days a week based on information given in the article.

If all goes as planned, the new Oak Barrel Tavern could debut sometime in the summer of 2018.

Da Vinci Ristorante Is Opening in Sudbury

An upscale Italian restaurant in Boston will soon have a suburban sibling with the same name--and a different vibe.

The MetroWest Daily News is reporting that Da Vinci Ristorante has received a liquor license to operate on Route 20 in Sudbury, taking over the space where Friendly's had once been. The article says that the people behind the Sudbury eatery Soul of India are also behind this restaurant, while an earlier post from the Sudbury Town Crier says that the chef comes from Da Vinci Ristorante on Columbus Avenue near where the South End, Back Bay, and Bay Village meet in Boston. Both articles say that the Sudbury location of Da Vinci will be more of a casual, family-friendly, and homey spot with reasonably-priced dishes.

If all goes as planned, Da Vinci Ristorante should be opening in Sudbury by the end of the year.

Sierra's Space in Sudbury to Go on the Auction Block

The roller coaster ride for a troubled dining spot is officially over.

According to an article in the Sudbury Town Crier, the space where Sierra's had once been is scheduled to go up for auction today following the foreclosure of the North Road property by owner Sam Cannarozzi. As previously reported, both Sam and Erica Cannarozzi had been hoping to open Erica's Italian Table in the former Sierra's space once the taxes they owed on the latter were paid, but the $50,000 owed have since escalated to nearly $64,000 and the foreclosure took place due to failure to pay the mortgage. (Whoever buys the property will need to pay the back taxes, according to the post.)

Sierra's was a Tex-Mex restaurant that temporarily closed in April of 2013 because of financial problems, then reopened, then closed again in August of 2014. A few months later, the Cannarozzis announced that they had plans to open Erica's, but it never came to be.

The address for the Sierra's space is 470 North Road, Sudbury, MA, 01776.

[August 2 update: According to a post on pesco.com, the auction of the Sierra's space was postponed due to bankruptcy and is now expected to take place on September 7.]

Erica's Italian Table on Track to Open in Former Sierra's Space in Sudbury

The owners of a now-closed Mexican restaurant that had its share of financial troubles are getting ready to open a new dining spot within the space--though it won't happen until they pay off some bills.

The Sudbury Town Crier is reporting that Sam and Erica Cannarozzi are hoping to open Erica's Italian Table in the former Sierra's space on North Road once they pay taxes owed, which were listed at approximately $50,000 as of last month when a meeting was held concerning the renewal of its license. The Sudbury board of selectmen said at the time that they would not renew the license until the taxes were paid, and while they are not paid back yet, Sam Cannarozzi says that they will be before Erica's opens and believes that the restaurant could be up and running in about four to six weeks.

Sierra's went through a troubled stretch during its final years in business, temporarily closing in April of 2013, then reopening before closing once again in August of 2014, two months after we reported that it was going through financial difficulties and asked the town for more time to pay off its debt. The first mention of Erica's opening in the Sierra's space came about in December of 2014, but the board of selectmen said it would not be able to open until the debts for Sierra's were paid off.

Once Erica's Italian Table does open, it will offer pasta and seafood dishes as well as pizza, with a dining room and a bar being set up within the space.

The address for the upcoming Erica's is 470 North Road, Sudbury, MA, 01776.
