The Skinny Pancake Is Opening at Northshore Mall in Peabody

A Vermont-based group of dining spots known in part for their crepes will be opening their first outlet in the Greater Boston area.

According to a message sent from @IrishEyesPhoto1 on Twitter/X, The Skinny Pancake is planning to open at Northshore Mall in Peabody, with a photo indicating that it will be moving into the former hop + grind space. Based on the other locations of The Skinny Pancake (which got its start as a cart on Burlington's Church Street Marketplace in 2003), the new location could be serving such items as breakfast sandwiches, breakfast burritos, sweet and savory crepes, smash burgers, poutine, maple milkshakes, coffee, and more.

The website for The Skinny Pancake can be found at https://skinnypancake.com/

[March 31, 2025 update: A check on the space indicates that the Peabody location of The Skinny Pancake is now open]

Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont Allow Beer, Wine Sales with Takeout Orders

Late last week, we reported that New Hampshire started allowing restaurants and bars to offer alcohol to people with their to-go orders. Now we have learned that three other New England states have done the same.

According to an article from NBC Connecticut, a post from the Providence Journal, and an article from WCAX, the states of Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Vermont are letting dining and drinking spots sell alcohol in sealed containers with people's takeout orders, though Connecticut and Rhode Island will not allow it to be included in delivery orders (it appears that Vermont will allow it, based on the article). This leaves Maine and Massachusetts as the only two New England states not offering unopened beer or wine with orders, though a request to do the same in Massachusetts had hit Governor Charlie Baker's desk last week.

Due to the Coronavirus crisis, all New England states have ruled that restaurants and bars are only allowed to offer takeout and/or delivery for the time being, with each state having reopening dates in place, though these dates could certainly change.

Team Behind Worthy Burger and Worthy Kitchen in Vermont to Open Location of Worthy Kitchen in Brookline

The people behind a pair of highly-regarded Vermont restaurants will expand to the Boston area.

According to a source, the folks who run Worthy Burger in South Royalton and Worthy Kitchen in Woodstock is looking to come to the local area, with a message from the place confirming that they are just starting with the permitting process for a new location. Worthy Burger first opened in 2012 in an old freight house and almost immediately began to get press from media outlets in Vermont and closer to Boston for its wood-fired burgers and craft beer list that includes some of the most sought-after beers in the state and elsewhere in New England. The following year, a "farm diner" in Woodstock called Worthy Kitchen opened, with the place offering comfort food and a list of local and regional craft beers. Both eating and drinking spots are run by Dave Brodrick (who founded the Blind Tiger in New York), Executive Chef Jason Merrill, and CFO Kurt Lessard.

The website for Worthy Burger and Worthy Kitchen can be found at http://worthyvermont.com/

[April 11-12 update: Boston Magazine states that the new spot will be a second location of Worthy Kitchen, and that it hopes to open later this year at 202 Washington Street in Brookline Village, which is where both Alere and Project 202 had been hoping to open over the past few years.]

[October 6 update: A chat with an employee at Worthy Burger during a weekend visit indicates that Worthy Kitchen could open sometime this winter--and this information was subsequently confirmed by Wicked Local Brookline. (Wicked Local also says that the place may have a rooftop bar by next summer.)]

[May 26, 2017 update: A note from @BostonTweet indicates that Worthy Kitchen is still on the way--and will open next to The Village Works coworking space--but it appears that it won't open until this fall at the earliest, based on what The Village Works told @BostonTweet.]

Latest Review: Alice's Restaurant, Chester, VT

photo of Alice's Restaurant, Chester, VTBoston's Hidden Restaurants took it to the road this week, reviewing a dining spot in Chester, Vermont, called Alice's Restaurant. Located along the town common in this quaint community near the eastern edge of the Green Mountain State, Alice's Restaurant is a truly charming spot that resides on the first floor of an old Victorian house. The restaurant has three dining areas, including an enclosed wraparound porch, and the menu mostly features traditional American fare at very cheap prices. As of the fall of 2009, Alice's is only open for breakfast and lunch, but they will eventually be offering dinner as well. Latest Review: Eaton's Sugarhouse, South Royalton, VT

photo of Eaton's Sugarhouse, South Royalton, VTThe latest review on the Boston's Hidden Restaurants Web site is for a restaurant outside of the Boston area (about two and a half hours northwest of the city) called Eaton's Sugarhouse. Eaton's is a restaurant, country store, and antique shop in South Royalton, VT, that is located just off of Route 89 about midway between the New Hampshire border and Montpelier. The restaurant features mostly home-cooked comfort food, including a wide variety of breakfast options. To read more about Eaton's Sugarhouse in South Royalton, VT, please click on the link above.

Latest Review: Putney Diner, Putney, VT

photo of Putney Diner, Putney, VTThe latest review on the Boston's Hidden Restaurants Web site is for a diner in Putney, Vermont, called the Putney Diner. Located on Route 5 in the center of the quaint village of Putney in Southern Vermont, the Putney Diner feels more like a family restaurant or neighborhood dining spot than a diner, but the menu offers classic diner fare. The diner is open for breakfast lunch, and dinner, and has a relatively spacious, comfortable dining room. To read more about the Putney Diner in Putney, VT, please click on the link above.
