Comella's Has Apparently Closed Its Shop at The Street Chestnut Hill; Delivery Option Continues

One of the physical locations of a local chain of Italian dining spots appears to have closed, though people in the area can still order delivery from the business.

According to several sources, Comella's at The Street Chestnut Hill has closed its storefront, with one source sending a picture showing a sign out front that indicates something new will be going into the space. A message we received from the company mentions that they continue to offer delivery to the Chestnut Hill community via phone or online orders, with the web page for that location saying that that location is indeed delivery-only now, while the page for Comella's on the website for The Street Chestnut Hill has been removed.

The Chestnut Hill location of Comella's first opened in the early part of 2011.

Guy Fieri's Flavortown Kitchen Is Now Operating Out of a Number of Bertucci's Restaurants

It looks like one of the best-known celebrity chefs and restaurateurs in the country has quietly started to run ghost kitchens out of a chain with roots in the local area.

Based on information given from Adam Gaffin of Universal Hub, Guy Fieri's Flavortown Kitchen is operating out of at least some Bertucci's locations in the Greater Boston area, with a check on the locations section of the delivery-only restaurant showing that diners can order Flavortown Kitchen dishes out of Bertucci's outlets in Brockton, Canton, Hingham, Lexington, Medford, North Andover, Peabody, Reading, Swampscott, West Roxbury, and others. There is at least an indirect connection between Bertucci's and Guy Fieri, as the growing Chicken Guy! chain is a collaboration between Fieri and Robert Earl (of Earl Enterprises, which is the parent company of Bertucci's).

Some of the offerings from the menu at Guy Fieri's Flavortown Kitchen include cheesesteak eggrolls, buffalo wings, burgers, Cuban sandwiches, Cajun chicken alfredo, macaroni and cheese, and fried pickles.

o ya in Boston's Leather District Is Now Home to gogo ya

One of Boston's best-known restaurants has been taken over by a fast-casual eatery known in part for its eclectic fusion fare.

According to a post from Eater Boston, o ya in the city's Leather District is now home to gogo ya, an eatery at Time Out Market Boston in the Fenway that is temporarily closed there. o ya is also closed for now as the pandemic continues, so owners Tim and Nancy Cushman have decided to use its space for gogo ya, which offers sushi tacos along with miso soup, mini rice bowls with sashimi, fried pork ribs, maki, nigiri, and more. gogo ya is open for takeout/delivery only, and the place is also offering sake, wine, Japanese beer, and cocktails to-go.

o ya has received countless awards for its sushi and Japanese small plates since opening in 2007; the Cushmans also run Hojoko in the Fenway and Mr Roni Cups in Chestnut Hill.

As soon as we find out when it might reopen, we will post another update here.]

More Boston-Area Restaurants Reopen for Takeout/Delivery As Phase 2 Approaches

It looks like there could finally be light at the end of the tunnel for restaurants in the Greater Boston area and elsewhere in Massachusetts, as Phase 2 could allow dining spots to open outdoor areas as early as Monday. As we get closer and closer to the lifting of restrictions, more restaurants and bars have been in the process of reopening for takeout and/or delivery, with some either reopening over the past few days or on the verge of reopening by this weekend.

According to several sources, including posters within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants and via Universal Hub, La Famiglia Giorgio's in Boston's North End, Flour in Fort Point, Floramo's in Chelsea, Coop's in Quincy, Dali, Diesel Cafe, and Zoe's in Somerville, The Frogmore in Jamaica Plain, Sabzi and Menotomy Grill in Arlington, and Flat Top Johnny's in Cambridge have all either opened back up or are planning to do shortly. In all cases, it is best to visit their social media pages and/or websites to find out their exact reopening dates and hours.

More restaurants and bars will likely be reopening as well by the end of the weekend, so stay tuned for more updates.

La Reina Debuts within Taranta in Boston's North End

The person behind an Italian dining spot with South American influences in Boston's North End has debuted what is basically a restaurant within a restaurant in response to the ongoing restrictions places on eating and drinking establishments in the local area.

According to the Facebook page for Taranta, owner Jose Duarte has set up a new spot called La Reina, which is basically a pop-up within Taranta that offers tacos, pupusas, and burritos for takeout and delivery. A recent post indicates that La Reina debuted over the weekend, with the menu for the popup showing three types of tacos, four types of pupusas, and burritos with several meat/veggie offerings included.

Jose Duarte is also one of the people behind a new Peruvian restaurant called Tambo 22 in Chelsea which is temporarily closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A List of More Boston-Area Restaurants and Bars That Are Reopening for Takeout/Delivery

Governor Baker and his administration now have a plan in place that could have the dining areas of restaurants reopening in as soon as three weeks and bars reopening as soon as six weeks, and many more dining and drinking spots have either reopened for takeout and/or delivery over the past few days or are on the verge of reopening by or before the upcoming Memorial Day weekend. And as mentioned earlier, it appears that at least some of them are doing so in order to get at least partially up and running as the reopening dates get closer and closer.

According to several sources, including posters within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants and via Universal Hub, The Abbey in Cambridge, The Smoke Shop BBQ at Somerville's Assembly Row, The Fours by North Station in Boston, Flour Bakery + Cafe in the Back Bay, Taiwan Cafe in Chinatown, Gaslight in the South End, Sorellina in Copley Square, Abby Lane and Teatro in the Theater District, Fuji at West of Chestnut in Quincy, Pan Asia in South Boston, Crush Pizza in downtown Boston, Tres Gatos in Jamaica Plain, Mandarin Gourmet in Chestnut Hill, and Boloco in Lynnfield and at Boston Common have either opened back up or are planning to do shortly. In all cases, it is best to visit their social media pages and/or websites to find out their exact reopening dates and hours.

Rewild Co-Founder to Open PlantPub Delivery Service and (Eventually) Beer Hall

One of the founders of a vegan beer hall that said goodbye to its pop-up home last year is opening a new vegan beer hall, though it will initially be a delivery-only business.

According to an article from Eater Boston, Pat McAuley of Rewild is opening PlantPub, with the business initially working out of a commissary kitchen whose range will cover an area that includes Boston, Cambridge, and Somerville. The post says that its delivery business should debut this summer, with the beer hall itself opening at a later date, and at an as-of-yet unknown location (a permanent lease has not yet been signed), and that Mary Dumont of the now-closed downtown Boston restaurant Cultivar is also a partner.

Rewild, which claimed to be the first 100-percent vegan restaurant, cafe, and beer hall in the United States when it opened in Quincy in 2018, has been looking to reopen in Cambridge's Central Square, though it is not known if/when this will be happening.

As Restaurants Continue to Suffer Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, Ghost Kitchens Could Begin to Flourish

With restaurant restrictions and shutdowns continuing across the country, it is no secret that the industry is reeling, but it looks like an emerging sector of the business might be in better shape than others, especially as the coronavirus crisis begins to plateau and hopefully lessen.

Based on an article from CNBC, it appears that "ghost kitchens" may be primed to take off, with C3--which is a consortium that is part of SBE Entertainment Group--planning to hire 1,000 workers while also signing leases with CloudKitchens, a startup that was founded by former Uber CEO Travis Kalanick. The post says that mall owner Simon Property is partnering with SBE to bring ghost kitchen cooking facilities to malls and hotels, with the plan being to open 138 kitchens by the end of the year.

CNBC mentions that at least some ghost kitchens--which are basically food prep/cooking facilities set up for creating delivery-only meals and are also known as cloud kitchens or virtual kitchens--are being set up within empty restaurant spaces, with SBE Entertainment CEO Sam Nazarian saying that "It's an interesting solution to what we believe, post-Covid, when a lot of restaurateurs will not be able to survive, and these restaurants will be going dark." (C3's delivery-only brands include Krispy Rice, which focuses on sushi, and Sam's Crispy Chicken, which offers chicken sandwiches.)

Several More Boston-Area Dining Spots End Takeout/Delivery While Two Reopen

The three-week mark of restaurant closings other than takeout/delivery due to the coronavirus crisis has arrived, and the trend of dining spots ending their attempts at takeout and/or delivery continues with more places shutting down for the time being. Two places, however, have decided to reopen, but one has some extra limitations.

According to multiple sources including Geoff Wong and Universal Hub, a number of restaurants including Il Capriccio in Waltham, Punjab Cafe in Quincy, 753 South in Roslindale, Tasca in Brighton, Tryst in Arlington, and the downtown Boston location of Crush Pizza have stopped their takeout/delivery options, effectively shutting their businesses down for the time being (Crush in Quincy remains open). Meanwhile, Clear Flour Bread in Brookline reopened this week, but only for online orders and with limited offerings of breads and pastries, with options being next-day pickup or "limited" delivery, and Little Pecan in Brighton is open once again for takeout/delivery. Other restaurants and food spots will likely be closing or reopening over the coming days, so as always, check back for updates as they come in.

Governor Baker Notes Behavior at St. Patrick's Day Restaurant Celebrations When Discussing Shutdown

During Governor Charlie Baker's press conference today, he talked about the initial shutdown of Massachusetts restaurants and bars other than takeout/delivery, and what apparently led to the ruling will likely not come as a surprise to many.

During the question-and-answer part of the press conference this afternoon, Baker mentioned that the issuing of the restaurant restrictions came on the heels of the observed behavior of people going to Boston-area dining and drinking spots for St. Patrick's Day celebrations on the weekend before the actual holiday. Governor Baker indicated that it was obvious a number of people were ignoring the guidance that had been put out at the time including social distancing, as on the Saturday before St. Patrick's Day, various local restaurants and bars had long lines outside and large crowds inside.

As noted in an earlier article, Baker extended the restaurant shutdown to May 4 this afternoon, with takeout and delivery continuing to be options.

Some More Boston-Area Restaurants End Takeout/Delivery While Others Decide to Give It a Try

We are now approaching the two-week period of the shutdown in which all Massachusetts restaurants can only allow takeout/delivery options due to the coronavirus outbreak, and early last week, we mentioned that some restaurants in the Boston area that had been offering takeout and/or delivery decided to shut it down, while others that initially decided against takeout/delivery ended up doing it after all. Both of these trends seem to be continuing this week.

According to multiple sources, at least a handful of dining spots including Royal India Bistro in Lexington and locations of Halfway Cafe in Dedham, Marlborough, and Watertown have stopped their takeout/delivery options, effectively shutting their restaurants down for the time being, while Rox Diner in West Roxbury plans to reopen, offering takeout and curbside pickup starting tomorrow. A Facebook post from Royal India Bistro says that "Based on all we know about federal, state, and city-wide mandates, CDC guidelines and science strongly suggesting minimizing non-essential social contact, we have made the hard decision to temporarily close our restaurants for two weeks. Starting Tuesday March 31" while an article from Universal Hub mentions that Halfway Cafe has shuttered because "our people's well-being and safety is our most relevant concern." Meanwhile, Rox Diner mentions in a Facebook post that they had "paused our service because we weren't comfortable changing our business model on the fly in the middle of a global crisis. Since then, we researched, sanitized, strategized and we are now confident that we have taken every available precaution to protect your health and ours."

Other restaurants in the region are making similar decisions on both ends as well, so keep checking back for updates as they come in.

[April 1 update: Eire Pub in Dorchester is opening back up as well (starting at 11:30 AM today), but only for takeout--and as always, it is cash only.]

Revere Beach Restaurants End Takeout Service; Delivery Service Only Option Now

An historic seaside area just north of Boston no longer has any takeout options for at least the time being.

According to a tweet from @JimMacKayOnAir of WBZ 1030, restaurants along Revere Beach Boulevard have been told to stop offering takeout, which means that they can only do delivery at this point, as Revere has seen a dramatic increase in COVID-19 positive cases over the past week from 8 to 83. A segment on WBZ mentions that the order came from the Revere Board of Health, and while an article in The Boston Herald indicates that the city "encouraged" restaurants along the beach to cease takeout, it appears that the dining spots voluntarily did so, with some switching to deliver-only and others closing down completely for now. It is not yet known how long Revere Beach restaurants will need to stick to delivery-only.

This news follows on the heels of Arlington ordering restaurants to keep customers from being inside any establishments early last week, with dining spots in town now only able to offer service via takeout windows or entrances where patrons remain outside, along with curbside delivery or regular delivery.

Sub Shops, Pizzerias Not Necessarily Immune to Dropoff in Business

While many restaurants in the Boston area and beyond that haven't been used to doing takeout/delivery have either completely shut down for now or have given it a shot with varying results, it might be assumed that places that have traditionally focused on takeout/delivery before the Coronavirus outbreak might be doing all right. Unfortunately, this isn't always the case.

Based on information from various sources along with a story on WBZ 1030 News Radio, such takeout spots as sub shops and pizzerias are apparently not immune from the dropoff in business following Governor Charlie Baker's ruling last week to shut down restaurants except for takeout/delivery. WBZ gives an example in its story of a North Shore pizzeria that has seen a dropoff of approximately 40% of late, mainly because people are simply not going out or getting together in general, with the story mentioning that business has "dropped off a cliff" in the case of the pizza place. This jibes with what we have heard concerning other takeout spots such as sub shops in which people simply are not going out nearly as much, and while delivery is still busy in some cases, for many, business for takeout places is down in general.

For now, the restaurant shutdown remains in effect until April 6, though it is not known if that date will hold at this point in time.

Town of Arlington Suspends Takeout Service Inside Restaurants; Curbside/Delivery Remain Options

The state of Massachusetts may be allowing restaurants to offer takeout and delivery, but a Boston suburb has tightened up its rules a bit.

According to a source, the town of Arlington will no longer allow people inside restaurants at all, with an update on the community's website saying that "Starting March 24th at noon, Arlington restaurants will no longer be permitted to allow customers inside their establishment. Restaurants will be required to provide curbside pick up or delivery only." The note goes on to say that the Health Department is also encouraging patrons to pay by credit card either by phone or online in order to limit "person-to-person interactions."

A ruling from Governor Baker that went into effect last Tuesday required restaurants in Massachusetts to close their dining and bar areas and only allow takeout and/or delivery, with a new stay at home advisory going into effect today that won't cause any changes for dining spots, though as Arlington shows, the rules could vary at the local level.

Some Boston-Area Restaurants Give Up on Takeout/Delivery While Others Decide to Give It a Go

Last Tuesday's ruling that restaurants and bars in Massachusetts could only offer takeout and/or delivery resulted in many places in the Boston area and beyond deciding to try to-go options even if they had never focused on it previously, while others made the decision to not bother at all, instead closing for the time being. Now we are seeing that some shuffling is starting to take place as to which dining spots are deciding what to do.

According to several sources, a number of restaurants in the region are shutting down their takeout/delivery options after trying it for a few days (and effectively shutting down the restaurants for now), with a couple of examples including a tweet from Angelinas Italian Restaurant in Tewksbury saying that "It is with a very heavy heart that we have decided to close today due to the coronavirus" while an article from Universal Hub says that Porter Cafe in West Roxbury mentions that "last night was its final night of takeout service until after conditions improve." Meanwhile, other restaurants that had supposedly closed operations temporarily last week are now giving takeout and/or delivery a try, including Posto in Somerville saying that they opened "for a trial run of take-out & delivery" yesterday and Foundry in Somerville mentioning that "we're launching our 'FOUNDRY TO GO' takeout/curbside pickup!"

The restaurant situation remain so fluid that it is very difficult to know from one minute to the next which places are open and which are not; a Twitter list including hundreds of restaurants is one way to check the latest status of various dining spots, with the link being accessed here:

Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont Allow Beer, Wine Sales with Takeout Orders

Late last week, we reported that New Hampshire started allowing restaurants and bars to offer alcohol to people with their to-go orders. Now we have learned that three other New England states have done the same.

According to an article from NBC Connecticut, a post from the Providence Journal, and an article from WCAX, the states of Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Vermont are letting dining and drinking spots sell alcohol in sealed containers with people's takeout orders, though Connecticut and Rhode Island will not allow it to be included in delivery orders (it appears that Vermont will allow it, based on the article). This leaves Maine and Massachusetts as the only two New England states not offering unopened beer or wine with orders, though a request to do the same in Massachusetts had hit Governor Charlie Baker's desk last week.

Due to the Coronavirus crisis, all New England states have ruled that restaurants and bars are only allowed to offer takeout and/or delivery for the time being, with each state having reopening dates in place, though these dates could certainly change.

Massachusetts Restaurants and Bars Are Now Limited to Takeout and Delivery Only

The order issued by Governor Charlie Baker on Sunday has kicked in, and it will drastically affect both restaurants/bars and customers.

As reported earlier, as of today all dining and drinking spots in Massachusetts will only be able to offer takeout and/or delivery service because of the Coronavirus, with seating areas being off-limits until Monday, April 6 at this point in time. The ruling does not affect grocery stores, which remain open for business, though it would appear to affect dining spots with seating inside markets (we are still trying to get details on that). In addition, at least four other New England states have instituted similar orders as well, with New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, and Connecticut all limiting restaurants and bars to takeout/delivery. It looks like as of this writing, dining and drinking spots in Maine are allowed to remain fully open, though that could change at any time so stay tuned for updates.

Because there could be hundreds--or even thousands--of food places that remain open in the Greater Boston area and elsewhere in the state (considering the sheer amount of existing takeout restaurants such as sub shops and pizza places), a full list of spots that remain open will not be posted here, at least for now; instead, a sampling of some local restaurants and bars that normally don't focus on takeout/delivery will be posted later, and the list of Boston-area restaurants and bars that have completely closed (including no takeout/delivery) for the time being will also be updated as well.

Sethji's and Dugu Open in Medfield

A couple of to-go spots have opened in the same space in the southwest suburbs of Boston, and they both feature cuisines from far away.

According to a source, Sethji's and Dugu are now open in Medfield, with the former featuring South Indian fare and the latter featuring West African fusion cuisine. The two Park Street businesses offer food items that can be ordered online to pick up, and Dugu also offers delivery service to Medfield and some of the nearby communities.

Windy City Pizza in Dorchester Opening New Location in Quincy

A pizzeria in Dorchester is expanding to a second location nearby, and it will offer very late-night dining along with delivery.

According to a source, Windy City Pizza on Gallivan Boulevard is planning to open a new shop on Newport Street in Quincy, with a Patriot Ledger article confirming this, saying that the upcoming eatery will be able to stay open until 3:00 AM while also offering delivery. The new location of Windy City could be opening around the end of the year if all goes as planned.

The original location of Windy City Pizza offers such items as salads, subs, wings, tenders, steak tips and calzones, in addition to pizza.

[May 7 update: According to a source, Windy City Pizza is now open in Quincy, with a check on the website seeming to confirm this, showing the address and hours for the spot. (The site says that although it is open until 3:00 AM on Fridays and Saturdays, it is open for delivery only after midnight.)]
