Stone L'oven Pizza Co. to Open in Waban

It looks like a pair of pizzerias will soon be joined by a third location, with this one being in the space where a restaurant from a well-known local chef and restaurateur had been.

According to a source, Stone L'oven Pizza Co. has a sign up in the window of the former Waban Kitchen space in the Waban section of Newton, with the sign simply saying "coming soon" and showing its website address. Once it opens, the new Beacon Street eatery will join others in Brewster and Canton, and based on the menu at those locations, expect to see a variety of pizzas cooked in a stone-fired oven along with the possibility of soups, salads, appetizers, calzones, panini, pasta dishes, and desserts.

Waban Kitchen, which closed earlier this year, was owned by Jeff Fournier, who also ran the now-closed 51 Lincoln in Newton Highlands. (The space in which Waban Kitchen resided has also been home to Kouzina.)

The address for this upcoming pizzeria in Waban is: Stone L'oven Pizza Co., 1649 Beacon Street, Waban, MA, 02465. The website for the other two locations can be found at http://stoneloven.com/

[January 18, 2017 update: A tipster tells us that Stone L'oven Pizza Co. has a sign out front that says it plans to open at the end of this month, while an earlier Facebook post from the place mentions the same.]

[January 30, 2017 update: A message from the place indicates that Stone L'oven Pizza Co. plans to open in Waban tomorrow (Tuesday, January 31).]

Waban Kitchen in Newton Has Closed

A well-known local chef and restaurateur has closed one of his dining spots.

According to a source, Waban Kitchen in Newton is no longer in business, with a note on the restaurant's website confirming this, saying that "It's never easy to turn the page and move on but we've made the difficult decision to close Waban Kitchen following our last service on Saturday, March 26th." The note, which was written by owner Jeff Fournier, goes on to say that he will now focus on 51 Lincoln, an upscale restaurant in Newton Highlands that opened a decade ago, and that Fournier's team at the now-closed Beacon Street eatery will be moving there. (At this point in time, it is not known what may be going into the Waban Kitchen space.)

Waban Kitchen first opened in the fall of 2012, taking over the space where Kouzina had been. The restaurant focused mainly on New American fare featuring dishes using locally-sourced ingredients.

Before opening 51 Lincoln and Waban Kitchen, Jeff Fournier had worked at such places as Pignoli, the Linwood Grill, Locke-Ober, Excelsior, Sophia's, and the Metropolitan Club, according to a page within the BostonChefs.com site.

The address for this now-closed restaurant in the Waban section of Newton was: Waban Kitchen, 1649 Beacon Street, Waban, MA, 02465.

Barry's Village Deli in Waban Is Up for Sale

A 45-year-old deli that is considered by some to be the best in the Boston area is on the selling block.

According to a Twitter post, Barry's Village Deli in the Waban section of Newton is up for sale, with a listing referred to by a Village 14 blurb indicating that the owners of the Windsor Road spot are retiring. The asking price for the place--which includes a deli counter and a two-floor dining area--is $395,000.

Barry's Village Deli is a spot that our sister site (Boston's Hidden Restaurants) has featured as an under-the-radar delicatessen. The review can be found at the following link:

The address for this delicatessen in Newton is: Barry's Village Deli, 6 Windsor Road, Waban, MA, 02468.

Owner of 51 Lincoln in Newton Highlands to Replace Kouzina with Waban Kitchen

The person behind an upscale restaurant in Newton Highlands has bought a Mediterranean dining spot in Waban and will be replacing it with a brand new eatery.

The Newton TAB is reporting that Jeffrey Fournier of 51 Lincoln on Lincoln Street has purchased Kouzina on Beacon Street, with the spot changing into a rustic farm-to-table restaurant called Waban Kitchen. There doesn't appear to be a specific closing date for the 11-year-old Kouzina, though it appears that Waban Kitchen could be open in late October, according to the article.

[September 14 update: The Boston Magazine Chowder blog gives more information on the upcoming Waban Kitchen, with the article mentioning that the 30-seat restaurant will feature New American fare with an emphasis on sustainable food. The dining spot will also have a 14-seat bar, with 30 different beers offered by the bottle.]

[October 31 update: According to the restaurant's website, Waban Kitchen opens tonight.]

Earlier this year we reported that Jeffrey Fournier, who first opened 51 Lincoln in 2006, is involved in the opening of another new restaurant called Liquid Art House, which will open on Arlington Street in Boston. The folks behind Kouzina will continue to operate their other restaurant--Cognac Bistro--on Harvard Street in Brookline.

The address for this new dining spot in Waban is: Waban Kitchen, 1649 Beacon Street, Waban, MA, 02465. Their website can be found at http://www.wabankitchen.com/
