Update: Dizin Fruttiberri in Watertown Has Closed; Natural FruttiBerri Opens in Its Space

[Ed note: This article was updated on October 17 to reflect the fact that a new shop has opened within the space.]

A shop west of Boston that featured Persian ice cream has shut down, though a new store has taken over the space.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Dizin Fruttiberri in Watertown is no longer in operation, with the social media for the Mt Auburn Street store indicating that its last day was Wednesday, October 9. We have heard from @JoeSosnoff, however, that Natural FruttiBerri is now open there, with an Instagram post saying "Great News...Grand Opening of Natural FruttiBerri...We are with you wishing you the Best in your Journey"

Dizin Fruttiberri featured such items as saffron and rose ice cream along with frozen yogurt and sorbet.

The address for the now-closed Dizin Fruttiberri (and new Natural FruttiBerri) is 127 Mt Auburn Street, Watertown, MA, 02472.

Blackbird Doughnuts Opens in Watertown

This summer, it was reported that a local group of gourmet doughnut shops would be opening a new outlet in a growing development just west of Boston, and now we have learned that it is up and running.

According to its website, Blackbird Doughnuts is now open in Watertown, moving into a space at Arsenal Yards. The new shop joins others in Boston's South End, Beacon Hill, Fenway, Brighton, Cambridge's Harvard Square, and Newton Centre, and the team behind the stores is also behind Banyan Bar + Refuge in the South End along with Sally's Sandwiches in the South End and Harvard Square.

Fruttiberri in Watertown Is On the Market

An ice cream and frozen yogurt shop just west of Boston is up for sale.

According to a source, Fruttiberri in Watertown is on the market, with a listing on Facebook Marketplace indicating that the people behind it are selling the Mt Auburn Street business because they are moving to another state. The listing mentions that the sale includes four frozen yogurt machines three commercial freezers, two commercial refrigerators, and more.

Blackbird Doughnuts Plans to Open at Arsenal Yards in Watertown This Fall

A local group of gourmet doughnut shops will soon have another location, with this one being just west of Boston.

According to a message sent to us, Blackbird Doughnuts is planning to open at Arsenal Yards in Watertown later this fall, with the shop joining others in the South End, Beacon Hill, Fenway, Brighton, Cambridge's Harvard Square, and Newton Centre. Based on those locations, expect to see a variety of gourmet doughnuts whose flavors change by the month at the new outlet.

The team behind Blackbird Doughnuts also runs Banyan Bar + Refuge in the South End along with Sally's Sandwiches in the South End and Harvard Square.

Wicked Bagel Plans to Open New Shop in the Former Porcini's Space in Watertown

A pair of bagel shops will apparently be joined by a third, taking over the space where an Italian/Mediterranean restaurant had been until closing earlier this year.

According to a source (Karin from Tugboat23), Wicked Bagel is planning to open in Watertown, moving into the former Porcini's space on School Street. We have been told that the new shop will have a liquor license and brunch service, while the space will include a patio out back. If all goes as planned, the new Wicked Bagel--which will join locations in Lexington and Woburn--could be open by late summer or early fall.

Porcini's closed down in January after being in business for 23 years.

Mighty Squirrel Brewing Co. Opens Biergarten at Arsenal Yards in Watertown

A brewery in Waltham has debuted a new outdoor space in a growing development a few miles to the east.

According to a Twitter post from @BostonTweet, Mighty Squirrel Brewing Co. opened a biergarten in Bond Square at Arsenal Yards in Watertown over the weekend, with a Facebook post from the place saying that the 7,000-square-foot seasonal space is open Thursday through Sunday and is dog-friendly. The new biergarten joins their facility on Waverly Oaks Road in Waltham which includes both indoor and outdoor seating along with food trucks.

Mighty Squirrel first opened in the latter part of 2018, with one of its most popular beers being a New England IPA called Cloud Candy.

Russo's in Watertown Is Closing

A beloved market whose roots date back more than 100 years is shutting down.

According to a source, Russo's in Watertown is closing, with a Facebook post from the Pleasant Street business confirming this, saying that "After more than 70 years working for the family business, Tony Russo is retiring. Our business will close this fall. It has been Tony's privilege to serve our many wholesale and retail customers for seven decades.⁣" Russo's, which started out as a small farm in the early 1900s, is known in part for its extensive selection of produce along with its meats, dairy products, baked goods and pastries, and flowers and Christmas trees--and it also is a wholesaler to local businesses, including restaurants.

[August 20 update: A Wicked Local article indicates that the property on which Russo's sits has been sold to NewTower Trust Company for $36.5 million, and that the plan is to close by October, with all 239 of its workers being laid off "beginning around Oct. 12 or within two weeks, based on business needs and circumstances." (Thanks to a source for letting us know about this.)]

[August 31 update: According to a source, signs are now up at Russo's saying that its last day in operation is September 18.]

Quebrada Baking Company Is Opening in Watertown

It looks like a trio of bakeries in the western suburbs will be joined by a fourth shop, with this one also being west of Boston.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Quebrada Baking Company appears to be opening in Watertown, with a picture showing a Quebrada truck outside an Orchard Street structure that had been home to an auto repair shop, while a sign for the bakery is also shown in the window. A real estate listing for the space also comes up when doing a search for the bakery, saying that the property has been sold. Once the new shop opens, it will join other locations in Arlington, Belmont, and Wellesley, and based on those stores, expect to see breads, pastries, desserts, coffee, and more at the new place.

Ben and Jerry's Is Opening at Arsenal Yards in Watertown

A beloved ice cream company with roots up north is opening a shop within a new complex just west of Boston that will also be home to a number of other dining and drinking spots.

According to a note from The Passionate Foodie, Ben and Jerry's is planning to open at the Arsenal Yards in Watertown, with a Facebook post from the development confirming this, saying that it plans to open sometime later this year. Once it opens, the new shop will join others in and around Boston, including in the Back Bay (two), Faneuil Hall, the Seaport District, Cambridge's Harvard Square, Braintree, and Natick, along with a kiosk by the New England Aquarium--and it will join a handful of restaurants and bars coming to Arsenal Yards as well, including Kura Sushi, The Gallows, Tori Jiro, Pepe's Pizza, Condesa Restaurante Mexicano, Tender Greens, Shake Shack, Pokeworks, and City Works Eatery and Pour House.

Francis Food Mart in Watertown Has Closed

It looks like a neighborhood market has shut its doors after nearly 70 years in business.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Francis Food Mart in Watertown is no longer in business, with a call placed to the Belmont Street shop confirming that it has indeed closed. The grocery store, which dates back to 1950, offered produce, dairy products, meats and seafood, baked goods, everyday food items, and more, along with beer and wine.

The address for this now-closed market in Watertown was: Francis Food Mart, 1084 Belmont Street, Watertown, MA, 02472.
