A&A Deli in Arlington Has Closed

by Marc Hurwitz

A decades-old suburban food shop known in part for its subs has shut down.

A check on the place on Sunday showed that A&A Deli in Arlington is no longer in business, with signs out front simply saying "closed" and the interior of the Mass. Ave. shop looking like it was in the process of being cleared out. Last week, a thread within The Arlington List Facebook group page mentioned that the store was indeed getting ready to shutter, though a specific opening date had not been confirmed at the time, while a call placed on Friday indicated that the store would be open on Saturday.

A&A Deli, which had in business since at least the mid-1980s, featured a variety of sandwiches, pasta dishes, pizza, and more, with one of its most popular items being its steak and cheese sub.

The address for this now-closed food shop in Arlington was: A&A Deli, 1042 Mass.Ave., Arlington, MA, 02476.

Kendall Market and Deli in Cambridge Has Apparently Closed

It looks like a food shop in Cambridge's Kendall Square/MIT area has shut its doors, and now the entire ground floor of its building has apparently been cleared of the businesses there.

According to a Twitter post from @Dipsys_pal, Kendall Market and Deli "vanished" over the weekend, with a call placed to the store indicating that its phone number has been disconnected. The food shop was one of a few businesses in the 290 Main Street building, including Cosi, Rebecca's Cafe, and Arrow Dry Cleaners, all of which are now gone as well.

Kendall Market and Deli, which had been around for more than a decade, offered breakfast dishes, salads, and sandwiches, along with grocery items and other products.

Newtowne Variety in Cambridge Has Closed

A beloved deli, sub shop, and convenience store in Cambridge has closed its doors forever after being in business for more than a half century.

The Cambridge Chronicle/TAB is reporting that Newtowne Variety on Windsor Street (roughly between Central Square and Kendall Square) has shut down, as the three brothers who own the place--Bert, Dave, and John Gauthier--have decided to retire. The corner store, which was located in a part of Cambridge called The Port, was a neighborhood fixture that offered salads, sandwiches and subs, breakfast items, and snacks, along with groceries and other items, and it was also known for its ties to the community including its annual lunch donations to the Community Art Center's youth film festival, according to the article.

Newtowne Variety, which was described in the article as a "local treasure" and had one of the only lunch counters in the neighborhood, first opened its doors 55 years ago.

The address for this now-closed shop was 93 Windsor Street, Cambridge, MA, 02139.

Square Market in Brookline's Washington Square Has Closed

A market and convenience store in Brookline has shut its doors after being in business for only about a half year.

A message sent from a source confirms what a Twitter poster said last month, that Square Market in the Washington Square area is no longer business, having closed a few days ago. A couple of sources mention that the closure of the Beacon Street shop may stem from a sharp rent increase, though this has not been completely confirmed as of yet.

Square Market first opened its doors last summer, taking over the space where a 7-Eleven had been; it offered sandwiches and coffee in addition to convenience store items.

The address for the now-closed Square Market in Washington Square was 1633 Beacon Street, Brookline, MA, 02445.

Thanks to @BostonTweet for initially bringing this to our attention.

7-Eleven to Acquire Tedeschi Food Shops

A Dallas-based chain of convenience stores is going to be taking over a local group of food shops.

The Boston Business Journal is reporting that 7-Eleven Inc. has worked out a deal to acquire the Rockland-based Tedeschi chain, though it is not known if Tedeschi will disappear from the map by way of a rebranding, or if the name will remain. The article says that it is also not known if any of the shops will close, but 7-Eleven is planning to extend job offers to most Tedeschi workers. Currently, 182 locations of Tedeschi Food Shops can be found in the Greater Boston area and New Hampshire, while nearly 10,500 7-Eleven shops can be found throughout the country.

Tedeschi Food Shops first started out in Rockland in 1923 as a small store that was located within founder's Angelo Tedeschi's home, according to the company website.

The BBJ says that the deal to purchase Tedeschi should be finalized sometime in the middle of the year.
