The Empanada's to Open in Boston's Fenway Neighborhood

A growing group of restaurants based in Florida will be expanding to Boston.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, The Empanada's is going to be opening in the Fenway, with a picture showing the logo for the business in the former Tenderoni's space at the corner of Boylston Street and Kilmarnock Street. The Empanada's first started out in Key Biscayne and currently has a handful of locations in Florida, offering a wide variety of South American-style empanadas filled with such ingredients as beef, cheese, spinach, ham, chicken, shrimp, salmon, and more.

Che! Empanada Opens in the Former Sub Zero Nitrogen Ice Cream Space in Cambridgeport

A small local group of dining spots featuring Argentinian food has expanded to a space along the Charles River.

According to a source, Che! Empanada is now open in Cambridge, moving into the space on Memorial Drive in the Cambridgeport section of the city that had been home to a location of Sub Zero Nitrogen Ice Cream. The new location joins others in Newtonville and Worcester (2), and the business had also been residing within the La Fabrica Central space in Cambridge's Central Square as well, though it isn't known whether La Fabrica is still offering their empanadas.

School Street Foods Is Opening in Lynnfield

The person behind a Latin-American puff pastry business is opening a permanent restaurant in the northern suburbs of Boston.

According to a source (Paul Dube), School Street Foods is planning to open in Lynnfield, with a Facebook post from owner Javier Baez saying the following:

Pastelito Pastelito Pastelito -- Dreams become reality! We're thrilled to announce that our team is launching a School Street Foods brick and mortar at 618 Salem St, Lynnfield. Get ready for a full menu featuring New England's best empanadas and more, Tuesday-Saturday, starting early November, with online ordering, delivery, dine-in, takeout, and catering!....More details to come but thank you to all the people that have supported this dream and this vision over the years. We wouldn't be here without you and we look forward to feeding you and hopefully putting smiles on your faces.

Baez has been selling his filled pastelitos at various pop-ups in the local area, including such fillings as birria, chicken and cheese, pastrami and cheese, chicken bacon ranch, buffalo chicken, reuben, and more.

Pikalo in Cambridge Has Apparently Closed

The Cambridge location of a local group of dining spots known for their empanadas appears to have closed down.

According to a couple of posters within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Pikalo on Harvard Street is no longer in business, having only lasted since September of last year. A check on the website for the business shows that the Cambridge outlet is indeed no longer listed, though other locations in Jamaica Plain, East Boston, Lawrence (2), and Lowell still show up on the site.

Pikalo had taken over the space where Izzy's, a beloved dining spot in Cambridge that specialized in Puerto Rican fare, was for 40 years.

Pikalo Opens in the Former Izzy's Restaurant Space in Cambridge

A local group of dining spots known in part for their empanadas has expanded to Cambridge, taking over the space where a longtime Puerto Rican eatery had been.

According to a Bluesky post from troysch1, Pikalo is now open in the former Izzy's Restaurant space on Harvard Street, joining others in Jamaica Plain, East Boston, Lawrence, and Lowell. Based on the other outlets, expect to find a variety of empanadas at the new spot along with such options as tostadas, burgers, smoothies, and more.

Izzy's closed early last year after being in business for 40 years.

Che! Empanada Opens within La Fabrica Central in Cambridge's Central Square

A pair of dining spots featuring Argentinian food have been joined by a third outlet, and this one resides within a Spanish-Caribbean restaurant.

According to a source (Ari Herzog), Che! Empanada is now open in the La Fabrica Central space in Cambridge's Central Square, with a Facebook post from the business saying "WE ARE NOW OPEN at our NEW LOCATION in CAMBRIDGE!!! Come, Visit Us & Share with your Friends or Family our Delicious Empanadas, just in La Fabrica Central‼️ ARGENTILICIOUS!!" The new location of Che! Empanada joins its original in Worcester along with one in Newtonville which debuted last spring; La Fabrica Central has been in operation since 2017, taking over the space that had previously been home to Monroe, and before that, Naga and Moksa.

Prieto Empanadas II Opens in Norwood

A Roxbury dining spot that features empanadas has expanded to a second space in the suburbs.

According to a Mastodon post from @mtkr, Prieto Empanadas II is now open in Norwood, moving into a space on at Nahatan Place on Lenox Street just east of the downtown area. Based on the original location on Humboldt Avenue, expect the new eatery to feature a variety of empanadas, including breakfast and dessert empanadas.

Che! Empanada Is Opening in Newtonville

A Worcester dining spot that features Argentinian food is expanding to the Boston area.

According to an article from Mass Live, Che! Empanada is planning to open in Newtonville, with a comment within the Village 14 site indicating that it will take over the former City Pizza & Pasta space on Washington Street. Based on the menu for the restaurant in Worcester's Kelley Square area, expect to see a variety of empanadas with beef, pork, chicken, seafood, and veggie fillings at the new location. 

Mass Live mentions that owner Albie Alvarez-Cote had hoped to open an outlet of Che! Empanada in Newton previously, but the deal fell through in March of 2020.

Carolicious Opens within Aeronaut Brewing Company Space in Somerville

A new dining option has come to a brewery in Somerville, and its focus will be on Venezuelan fare.

According to an article from Eater Boston, Carolicious is now open within Aeronaut Brewing Company on Tyler Street, with the eatery joining Tasting Counter and Somerville Chocolate in the Foods Hub area of the facility. Eater mentions that the people behind Carolicious are Carolina Garcia and Carolina Salinas, who have been involved with pop-ups including ones at the brewery as well as various events and farmers markets. The new dining spot will offer such items as arepas, bowls, and pastelitos andinos (empanadas filled with meat or veggies).

Buenas to Open at Bow Market in Somerville's Union Square

A local business that features South American food products is on its way to an upcoming development in Somerville.

According to Vanessa Yip, the E-Som Market manager who has featured the company at the market and other La Brasa events, Buenas is coming to Bow Market in Union Square, with the food stall offering empanadas (both heated and frozen to cook at home), sandwiches de miga, chivitos, spicy Chilean table sauces, and more. Currently, the food items at Buenas can be purchased online and they can also be found at such places as Taza at Boston Public Market and Formaggio in the South End and Cambridge.

Bow Market, which will reside between Somerville Avenue and Bow Street, is expected to have more than 30 stalls along with a brewery and a comedy club.

Del Sur Is Opening in Burlington

A fast-food place that focuses on empanadas is on its way to a northern suburb of Boston.

The Daily Times Chronicle is reporting that Del Sur is going to be opening in Burlington, with the Cambridge Street spot being mainly a takeout place with seating for nine. The article says that fresh empanadas will be the focus here, though it is not yet know whether they will offer anything else on their menu. Del Sur was recently given the green light by the Burlington Planning Board, and it looks like the eatery could be opening in the fall, according to the Daily Times Chronicle.

[April 9, 2015 update: According to a poster on the Chowhound site, it looks like Del Sur may be opening during the week of April 22, and that it will be a small fast-food spot using fresh, natural, organic and locally-sourced ingredients. In addition, an earlier meeting minutes page within the Town of Burlington website indicates that it will be a Chilean restaurant.]
