Karaoke Bar May Be Coming to Patron's Space in Allston

by Marc Hurwitz

A new spot featuring karaoke could be opening in Allston, and it would be taking over the space where a Mexican restaurant had been.

Universal Hub is reporting that the person behind Limelight Stage + Studios by Boston Common is planning to open a similar karaoke bar in the former Patron's space on Brighton Avenue in Allston Village. The article says that the proposed place, which does not yet have a name, has the support of the mayor's office, a local city counselor, and the Allston Civic Association, but while they did receive approval for a variance from the zoning board for karaoke, they still need approval of licenses for food and alcohol from the licensing board. Owner Henry Wong mentions through his attorney that a stage would need to be added to the space, with this being the main change to the space.

Patron's and the Sunset Grill & Tap downstairs both closed toward the end of last year, several months after their parent company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

The address for this proposed karaoke bar would be 138 Brighton Avenue, Allston, MA, 02134.

[February 6, 2019 update: According to a licensing board hearing page within the City of Boston website, the name of the company opening the karaoke bar in the former Patron's space is Stage Karaoke, LLC, and while the DBA is missing from the notice, it looks like the name of the place could also be called Stage Karaoke. (The hearing is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, February 13, so more should be known by late next week.)]

Gourmet Oriental in Weymouth Has Closed

by Marc Hurwitz

A South Shore restaurant known in part for its Chinese-American food and karaoke has shut down.

According to a source, Gourmet Oriental in Weymouth is no longer in business, with the Yelp page for the place seeming to confirm this. The Washington Street spot featured old-school Chinese fare along with Polynesian-style cocktails, and it also had karaoke, DJs, and live music as well.

It is not yet known why Gourmet Oriental closed, nor is it known what might move into the space; as soon as we find out more, we will post an update here.

The address for this now-closed Chinese restaurant in Weymouth was: Gourmet Oriental, 625 Washington Street, Weymouth, MA, 02188.

The Wave Sports Pub in Waltham Has Closed

A bar west of Boston has closed its doors, and it is anyone's guess as to what might move into its enormous space.

A Twitter post from the Brand New Watch blog of Wicked Local indicates that The Wave Sports Pub in Waltham is now shuttered, with a note saying that "After 30 years in business the Wave Sports Pub has made the decision to close its doors for good effective Tuesday September 3rd, 2013." The sprawling bar, which was in the same building as the Waltham Athletic Club, was known as a place to go to shoot pool (it had a large number of tables) as well as karaoke.

Because The Wave's space is so large, it could end up being something other than a new restaurant or bar, but at this point, there is no word on what might be taking over the spot. (Keep checking back for updates.)

The address for this now-closed bar in Waltham was: The Wave Sports Pub, 411 Waverley Oaks Road, Waltham, MA, 02452.
