Hotel Proposed for James Hook & Co. Site in Boston; Restaurant Would Move into First Floor Space

Several years ago, it was reported that a landmark seafood store and dining spot on the Boston waterfront could become home to a development that would keep the business at the site. Now we have learned that new plans are now in the works for the space.

According to an article from the Boston Business Journal, a 305-foot hotel is being proposed for the site of James Hook & Co., with the 400-room spot having the lobster place on the ground floor where it would include a restaurant, takeout space, and wholesale business. The post mentions that the hotel itself would include guest dining rooms and a rooftop restaurant and terrace as well, though details on the latter have not yet been given. Back in 2014, initial plans were submitted for a 22-story tower to be built at the Hook site, but those plans were eventually put on hold.

James Hook & Co. first opened its doors back in 1925.

The address for James Hook & Co. is 440 Atlantic Avenue, Boston, MA, 02210. Its website is at https://jameshooklobster.com/

James Hook & Co. Site in Boston May Be Redeveloped; Store Plans to Stay Put

Last week we mentioned that a landmark seafood store and dining spot on the Boston waterfront was possibly looking to add alcohol to its menu and stay open later. Now we have learned that there are plans in place to develop the site on which it resides, though the shop would continue to operate there.

The Boston Herald is reporting that a developer is working with James Hook & Co. to build a hotel or a residential structure at the Atlantic Avenue site on which it currently resides, with the plan being for the seafood retailer/wholesaler to "maintain an expanded presence in the new development." The article says that the plans will be unveiled sometime this fall, with construction commencing no earlier than the spring of 2016.

According to the article, James Hook is still looking to acquire a liquor license and is also hoping to remain open until 10:00 PM, which repeats what we had reported last Wednesday, though we were told by @UniversalHub that the license request had been withdrawn late last week. (The Herald also says that Hook has proposed setting up a 72-seat outdoor patio.)

[September 8 update: According to a Licensing Board page within the City of Boston website, the liquor license request by James Hook is back, with a hearing on the issue taking place this Wednesday; the note also mentions the outdoor patio as well as the later closing time.]

James Hook & Co. has been in business since 1925.

The address for James Hook & Co. is 440 Atlantic Avenue, Boston, MA, 02210. Its website can be found at http://www.jameshooklobster.com/

Luke's Lobster to Be at Boston's Head of the Charles Regatta

A New York-based group of lobster shacks that gets its lobsters from Maine will be coming to Boston in a few days, setting up shop at one of the city's most popular events.

An email sent to us from Luke's Lobster indicates that they will be at the Head of the Charles regatta this weekend, dishing out lobster rolls as well as shrimp and crab rolls from a tent set up at the event. Luke's will also offer chowder that will come from Maine partner Hurricane's Premium Soup and Chowder, which was awarded second place in Newport's Great Chowder Cookoff this year.

Former lobsterman and Maine resident Luke Holden--along with his father Jeff Holden and business partner Ben Conniff--established Luke's Lobster in the East Village of New York in the fall of 2009, and now has shops in the Upper West Side, Financial District, and the Plaza Food Hall in Midtown Manhattan, along with locations in Washington, DC (2), and Bethesda, MD. (Luke's also has a food truck in New York as well.) The website for Luke's Lobster can be found at http://www.lukeslobster.com/
