Louis Boston on the Waterfront Is Closing; Sam's at Louis to Move Next Door

[Ed note: This article was updated on March 24 to reflect the fact that Sam's will be moving to a new location.]

A high-end clothing shop on the Boston waterfront is closing after many decades in business, though the restaurant that is part of it will stay open.

According to one of the people involved with Sam's at Louis on Northern Avenue, the dining spot will remain in operation even though the store Louis Boston is shuttering (The Boston Globe wrote about its closing today, saying that the shop shuts down in July after more than 85 years in business). The clothing store used to be located on Berkeley Street in Boston's Back Bay before moving to the waterfront in the winter of 2009/2010; the restaurant opened within the building a few months later.

Sam's is an upscale but casual dining spot known in part for its patio with spectacular views of Boston Harbor, with its menu featuring mostly New American fare such as deviled eggs, octopus, roasted half chicken, pork belly, skirt steak, and scallops.

[March 24 update: The Boston Globe is reporting that Sam's is going to be moving next door into a space that will have a bigger patio--and the same views of the harbor.]

[August 4 update: A new article from The Boston Globe states that Sam's closes on August 31 and will reopen in its new home next door (at Twenty Two Liberty) in November. The post also says that the new location of Sam's will be at ground level rather than on the second floor (as its current location is), though it will still have water views.]

[October 8 update: A Twitter post from this afternoon shows that the building in which Sam's and Louis Boston resided is in the process of being demolished.]

Ariana Restaurant in Allston Moving to Charlesview Complex

It looks like an Afghan dining spot in Allston could be moving to a larger space nearby.

According to a post from Universal Hub, Ariana Restaurant on Brighton Avenue in the heart of the village is hoping to move to the new Charlesview complex, which is on Western Avenue near Soldiers Field Road and the Charles River. Before the eatery can make the move, it will need approval from the licensing board to change the address on the liquor license; UH says that the board "deferred action" on the issue at a meeting that took place yesterday.

[January 21 update: Based on information from a Boston Licensing Board page, Ariana could soon be one step closer to moving, as the city is looking into its plans today to transfer its liquor license to a new place called Mala Restaurant, which would be at the same location.]

[February 23 update: According to an article in Eater Boston, Ariana will leave its home on Brighton Avenue on February 28, with the restaurant hoping to move into its new space at the Charlesview complex around the middle of March.]

[August 20 update: A new article from Eater Boston states that Ariana opens in its new home on Saturday, August 29.]

Ariana Restaurant first opened its doors in Allston approximately five years ago.

Stadium Sports Bar and Grill in Downtown Boston and South Boston Have Closed; Quincy Location Remains Open

Last month we reported that a location of a local group of sports bars had been sold. Now we have learned that the other two have closed down.

A phone call placed to Stadium Sports Bar and Grill in Quincy indicates that its locations in downtown Boston and South Boston are now shuttered, while the bar on Hancock Street in Quincy Center remains open under new ownership (the people behind The Crossing on Tremont Street in Boston's Mission Hill area purchased it). A licensing board page within the City of Boston website shows that the Southie location on Old Colony Avenue may be transferred to a new owner--though little else is known right now--while the status of the downtown location on State Street is unknown at this point in time.

[January 14 update: Universal Hub is reporting that the proposed license transfer mentioned above for the South Boston location of the Stadium is not technically a sale to another restaurant/bar owner; the article says that developers want to purchase the building--and have the liquor license included in the sale--and tear down the structure in order to build 20 condos at the site, with retail/restaurant space being a possibility on the ground floor. According to UH, if the developers can't find someone to open a dining spot there, they would sell the license.]

Another outlet of Stadium Sports Bar and Grill on Moody Street in Waltham closed in 2013 and became a bar called Playmakers.

Saladworks Is Opening in Downtown Boston

Nearly seven years after first reporting on its expansion plans into the Boston area (and six years after it opened its first and only location in the region), it now looks like a Pennsylvania-based restaurant chain that features salads, soups, and sandwiches is coming to the heart of the city's downtown area.

According to a licensing board page within the City of Boston website, Saladworks is planning to open on Tremont Street near where it meets Cambridge Street and Court Street by Government Center. Once it opens, the new eatery will join another location at the CambridgeSide Galleria in East Cambridge, along with more than 100 locations elsewhere in the country (the only other one that had been in New England--an outlet in Trumbull, CT--is now closed).

[March 11 update: According to a Twitter post from DTownBostonBID, the new Saladworks on Tremont Street opens today, about a month after the chain filed for bankruptcy (see article--Saladworks Declares Chapter 11 Bankruptcy).]

Saladworks first started out in 1986 in Cherry Hill, NJ.

The Raven's Nest in Walpole Becomes The Patriot's Nest Once Again

An Irish pub and restaurant southwest of Boston is showing its support for the New England Patriots yet again as the team gets ready for a big playoff game this weekend.

According to an article in The Medfield Press, The Raven's Nest in Walpole Center has temporarily changed its name to "The Patriot's Nest" for the third time in the past four years, and the dining and drinking spot is hoping for a win in what is basically a rubber match (the Patriots beat the Baltimore Ravens the first time the pub's name was changed in 2012 but lost to them the following year). The article says that Ravens fans are more than welcome to enjoy food and drink at the place, and "may even feel comfortable sitting among the pub's raven purple."

Sullivan's in South Boston May Open a Second Location in Hingham

An iconic snack shack in South Boston is looking to open a second location, with this one being along the water on the South Shore.

The Hingham Journal is reporting that Sullivan's at Castle Island is working with the town to open another location at the Hingham Bathing Beach, which is just off Route 3A near Monument Park. The article says that the eatery would take over the beach's concession stand and tentatively be open from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM daily from March to November, with the bathhouse being replaced by a new structure that would be between 2,000 and 2,400 square feet in size. If all goes as planned, the new location of Sullivan's could be opening sometime in 2016.

[March 29 update: The Boston Globe mentions that plans for Sullivan's to open in Hingham are still on, with the town's beach trustees allowing the owner of the eatery a 60-day extension for issues related to engineering (including utilities). The article says that the new location would have a similar feel to that of the original snack shack at Castle Island, including 2,400 square feet of space and new restrooms. If all goes well, the new Sullivan's could open next spring.]
