Two months after reporting that a burger restaurant in Boston's Fenway neighborhood was looking to expand to Davis Square in Somerville, it appears that the folks behind the place may be eyeing an historic diner that has been in the square for more than 70 years.
According to one of the moderators of the Davis Square Live Journal blog, Tasty Burger is apparently in negotiations to purchase the Rosebud Diner on Summer Street as well as the bar and grill behind it. The poster states that the people behind Tasty Burger "plan to combine the two into a single restaurant," with this information coming from a member of the Somerville Historic Preservation Commission. A check on the City of Somerville website indeed indicates that a potential upcoming case involves the Rosebud, with talks being focused on a "signage change under discussion due to potential new ownership and business plan."
The poster on the Live Journal page states that the Somerville Historic Preservation Commission is involved because the diner, which first opened in 1941, has been designated as a single-building historic district.
[March 14 update: The Chowder blog of Boston Magazine reports that plans for a Tasty Burger in Davis Square have fallen through.]
The original Tasty Burger can be found at 1301 Boylston Street, which is about a block south of Fenway Park.
