Burger Dive at Somerville's Assembly Row Is Closing

A burger spot in Somerville is closing after approximately seven years in business.

According to a Facebook post from the place, Burger Dive at Assembly Row is shutting down, with the restaurant thanking customers for their patronage and referring them to Papagayo nearby which is run by the same team (Legendary Restaurant Group), while also hinting that they may be looking at another location for the place. Burger Dive first opened in the fall of 2012, offering a variety of burgers along with "adult" milkshakes.

It is not known if Burger Dive already closed or whether it will be shutting down soon; we will post an update once we find out more.

The address for Burger Dive is 702 Grand Union Boulevard, Somerville, MA, 02145.

[August 13 update: According to a source, a worker at Papagayo mentions that Burger Dive has already closed.]

[August 14 update: Eater Boston says that the space where Burger Dive had been will become home to a bank, and that the restaurant's catering business will continue as it looks for a new location, possibly in Boston's Seaport District or in the downtown area of the city.]

5 Napkin Burger at Boston's Prudential Center Has Closed

by Marc Hurwitz

A New York-based group of burger spots has closed its sole Boston location.

According to a source, 5 Napkin Burger at the Prudential Center is no longer in business, with its website confirming this, saying that "It has been our pleasure to serve you for the last 7 years. We have enjoyed every minute of our time in Boston. Unfortunately, our run has come to an end and we are now closed. We are sorry for any inconvenience or disappointment this causes." No reason has been given for its closure and it is not known exactly when the place closed, though a check on the spot last week indicated that it appeared to be open at the time.

5 Napkin Burger first opened at the Pru in the spring of 2011, offering a variety of burgers along with clam chowder, wings, tuna poke, chicken and waffles, and more. It currently has four other locations, all of which are in New York City.

The website for 5 Napkin Burger can be found at: http://www.5napkinburger.com/

Boston Burger Company Is Opening in Salem

by Marc Hurwitz

Last year, we reported that a trio of burger spots might be opening a fourth location. Now we have learned that a fifth outlet is on the way as well.

According to a post in The Salem News, Boston Burger Company is planning to open in Salem, taking over the space on Washington Street where Caffe Graziani had been until shutting down in 2015. This news jibes with an earlier Facebook post from OctoCog, while the website for the group of restaurants confirms that it will indeed be coming to Salem. The site also mentions that an outlet in Cambridge's Kendall Square is still in the works, which would be the second location in Cambridge and would join others in Boston and Somerville.

The address for this new burger spot in Salem is: Boston Burger Company, 133 Washington Street, Salem, MA, 01970. The website for all locations can be found at http://www.bostonburgerco.com/

A&B Burgers Is Opening at The Beverly by North Station in Boston

by Marc Hurwitz

Earlier this year, it was learned that a popular spot for burgers and more on the North Shore was looking to expand to Boston. Now we have discovered that this will indeed be happening.

According to an Instagram post from Thomas Holland of A&B Burgers in Beverly, a lease has been signed for a new location somewhere in Boston, though a specific location has not been given as of yet. A Bizapedia page mentions the company name is A&B Burgers - Causeway, LLC, but we are still waiting on an exact address, which appears to be coming shortly; as soon as we find out more, we will post an update here.

In the fall of 2016, we reported that A&B Burgers was eyeing a space in Amesbury, but those plans fell through, though at that time it was announced that they were thinking of opening a location closer to Boston, while an article from Eater Boston a couple of months ago mentioned that they were indeed attempting to finalize a lease within the city. (The Beverly location of A&B Burgers started out in Salem in 2013, moving to its present space in early 2016.)

The website for A&B Burgers can be found at http://anbburgers.com/

[April 9 update: According to a press release, the new location of A&B Burgers will be (interestingly enough) at The Beverly, which is across from North Station; the upcoming restaurant will have have seating for 100 with approximately 19 bar seats, and it will have views of Charlestown and the Zakim Bridge.]

[February 20, 2019 update: A Facebook post from the place indicates that A&B Burgers opens at The Beverly in Boston tomorrow (Thursday, February 21).]

A trio of burger spots with one location in Cambridge could be opening a second location in the city, and it looks like it is eyeing a new development for its latest outlet.

According to a License Commission General Hearing page, Boston Burger Company has applied for a license to operate at 610 Main Street, which is between Central Square and Kendall Square and is part of a complex that includes 610 Main Street South and 610 Main Street North, the latter of which is home to Sulmona restaurant and Cafe Luna. If approved, the new location of the burger spot would join others between Cambridge's Harvard Square and Central Square, Somerville's Davis Square, and Boston's Back Bay.

In addition to burgers, Boston Burger Company also offers soups, salads, boneless wings, chicken sandwiches, and more. Its website can be found at http://www.bostonburgerco.com/

Tasty Burger Is Opening at Boston's North Station

A local group of burger spots is opening a new location--and this one should be popular with both commuters and sports fans.

Boston Magazine is reporting that Tasty Burger is planning to open on the ground floor of the new Avalon North Station residential development, which is located at 1 Nashua Street next to North Station and TD Garden. The article says that the new eatery will be a counter-service spot with a dining room and that it will be open for lunch and dinner, offering such items as burgers, hot dogs, shakes, and more, along with beer and wine.

If all goes as planned, the new Tasty Burger could open in May, joining other nearby locations in Boston's Fenway neighborhood, Back Bay Station, Dudley Square in Roxbury [ed note--now closed], South Boston, and Cambridge's Harvard Square.

Tasty Burger Raising Equity, May Go National

It looks like a local group of burger restaurants could have some expansion plans in the works.

The Boston Globe is reporting that The Franklin Restaurant Group--which operates several Tasty Burger locations--is hoping to raise $15 million in funds as part of a reorganization that would allow for a possible national expansion. The article quotes Phil Audino of the restaurant group as saying there is "nothing huge on the map" at this point in time, but he does say that the equity is being raised for future expansion, while a statement last month from Suleiman Holdings says that Mark Suleiman has joined the board of directors of Tasty Burger "as the neighborhood burger shop begins its national expansion."

Currently, locations of Tasty Burger can be found in Boston's Fenway neighborhood, Back Bay Station, Dudley Square in Roxbury, South Boston, Cambridge's Harvard Square, and soon, Washington, DC. The Franklin Restaurant Group also runs Franklin Cafe in the South End and in Gloucester, along with Citizen Public House & Oyster Bar in the Fenway. Five to Ten More Wahlburgers to Open in Massachusetts

One month after reporting that the Wahlberg brothers were planning to open another Boston location of their chain of burger restaurants, we have now learned that a number of new locations will be on their way to the region as well.

A release from PR Newswire states that a new development group that includes "Wahlberg family members" plans to open between five and ten new locations of Wahlburgers in Massachusetts, including the previously announced outlet at the upcoming South Bay Town Center in Dorchester. It is not yet known when the restaurants will open, nor is it known exactly where; as soon as we get more information, we will post an update here.

The post also mentions that the Wahlburgers (also previously mentioned) for Logan Airport will be opening within the next few months, though it does not specifically say if this one is included among the five to ten upcoming restaurants mentioned.

Wahlburgers Planning to Open within South Bay Town Center in Dorchester

It looks like the Wahlberg brothers may be opening another Boston location of their chain of burger restaurants, and this one would be in their old neighborhood.

The Boston Herald is reporting that Wahlburgers is planning to open within the upcoming South Bay Town Center development in Dorchester, which will be located next to the South Bay shopping center just off the Southeast Expressway. The article says that the Hingham-based company, which is headed up by former Dorchester residents Mark, Donnie, and Paul Wahlberg, hopes to raise $10 million from investors to open the place and that they have already raised $1.36 million. If the new Wahlburgers does become reality, it would be 5,000 square feet in size, according to the Herald.

[May 16 update: It looks like the Dorchester location of Wahlburgers is one step closer to become reality, as the Dorchester Reporter states that the Boston Redevelopment Authority Board has approved of the plans for the South Bay Town Center development. No opening date has been given for the Wahlburgers, though the article says that ground could be broken on South Bay Town Center in June and that it will be finished during 2017 and 2018.]

Beta Burger Is Opening in Boston's Mission Hill Neighborhood

A burger spot that features customized hamburgers using high-tech equipment and rather interesting cooking techniques is on its way to Boston.

The Boston Globe is reporting that Beta Burger is planning to open on Tremont Street in the city's Mission Hill neighborhood, with founder Adrian Wong hoping to have the eatery become what the article says would be "the Chipotle of the beef-and-bun segment, but with an unusual cooking technique." Wong plans to offer burgers cooked using a water vapor oven that makes the patties particularly moist, with the burgers being cooked for approximately an hour at 135 degrees, mirroring the currently popular sous vide style of cooking. When orders are placed, the burgers are then transferred to a grill where "texture, flavor, and visual appeal" are given to the patties.

[July 9 update: BostInno mentions (via an interview with the founder) that Beta Burger plans to open in early August.]

[October 19 update: Eater Boston states that Beta Burger has its grand opening this Thursday (October 22).]

A&B Salem to Move to Beverly

A burger spot on the North Shore is going to be moving one town over.

Eater Boston is reporting (via The Salem News) that A&B Salem is hoping to leave its location within a 200-year-old jail complex on St. Peter Street, saying that its proposed move to Beverly is due to such issues as limited parking because of "city-protected green space" and a possible interior expansion being hindered by "protected, historic architecture." The owners of the burger place are turning to Kickstarter to help raise funds for a move to the site of a former grocery store on Cabot Street in Beverly, which has resulted in a backlash from some people on its Facebook page; the owners of A&B responded with a followup FB note, saying that the challenges they face by staying in Salem "outweighed the [benefits] when it came to running our business successfully" and that the Kickstarter campaign would only fund 10% of the move.

A&B first opened in December of 2013, taking over the space where the Great Escape restaurant had once been.

[April 1 update: According to a Twitter post from the dining spot, A&B will be moving to Beverly around the end of the summer (their lease in Salem ends August 31).]

[August 7 update: A Facebook post from A&B indicates that they will be open in Salem until August 31, at which point there may be a period of approximately four weeks (with two weeks of training time) before they move into their new home in Beverly.]

[January 5, 2016 update: A new Facebook note from A&B mentions that will open in their new Beverly location on Friday (January 8).]

"Multiple" New Locations of Tasty Burger Are Apparently On the Way

The burger craze appears to be continuing in the Boston area, as it looks like the people behind several local burger restaurants are going to be opening some more locations.

Boston Magazine is reporting that David DuBois and his Franklin Restaurant Group are looking to open "multiple new locations of Tasty Burger" in early 2015, though no specific locations have been announced as of yet. As reported earlier, it looks like one location of the burger spot will be coming to Back Bay Station, with this one (and the others that are apparently coming) joining existing shops on Boylston Street in Boston's Fenway neighborhood, on JFK Street in Cambridge's Harvard Square, and at L Street and East 4th Street in South Boston.

The article mentions that DuBois--who is also behind the Franklin Cafe in the South End, South Boston (which closes soon), and Gloucester, along with The Citizen Public House and Oyster Bar in Fenway--will open a "Franklin-esque concept" somewhere in Boston.

Shake Shack Is Going Public

A New York-based burger and shake place that has two (and soon, three) locations in the Boston area is planning to offer shares of stock along with its food and drink.

The Baltimore Sun is reporting that Shake Shack is looking to go public, with an IPO in the works, though the majority owner of Shake Shack (Union Square Hospitality Group LLC) has not yet commented on this, nor has a Shake Shack spokesperson (and the sources have requested that they not be identified because the deliberations that are taking place are private). The article says that the sources say Union Square Hospitality Group has been talking with investment banks of late to appoint underwriters for the stock offering.

[August 22 update: The Orlando Sentinel mentions (via sources who are familiar with the proposal) that JPMorgan and Morgan Stanley have been picked to lead the planned IPO for Shake Shack, which could happen as early as this year. (Thanks to @FoodserviceEast for bringing this to our attention.)]

[January 30, 2015 update: Eater Boston states that Shake Shack went public today, with its stock going from an IPO of $21 to as high as $50 per share as of this morning. (EB also says that the IPO is worth $1 billion.)]

Other locations can be found in the New York City area along with Connecticut, Florida, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and overseas. (Its website is at http://www.shakeshack.com/)

Boston Burger Company Moving into Dolphin Seafood Space in Cambridge

A burger restaurant that has locations in Somerville and Boston is opening a third, with this one being between Harvard Square and Central Square in Cambridge.

According to a License Commission General Hearing page within the City of Cambridge website, Boston Burger Company is seeking to acquire the All Alcoholic Beverages Restaurant License that is currently held by Dolphin Seafood on Mass. Ave., with the note seeming to indicate that it will be taking over Dolphin's space (this has not been confirmed as of yet). The note says that if the transfer does take place, the new location of the burger spot would have 72 seats and proposed hours from 11:00 AM to 1:00 AM seven days a week.

Wahlburgers Is Opening in Boston's Fenway Neighborhood

Two years ago, we reported that the Wahlberg brothers were possibly planning to open a location of their Wahlburgers restaurant in the Fenway section of Boston. Now we have learned that this will definitely be happening.

The Boston Business Journal reported last night that the group behind the Hingham restaurant has reached terms on a lease for a space somewhere in the neighborhood, with the 4,200-square-foot spot being in a Samuels & Associates development. The article says that the lease should be signed for the place in approximately two weeks, and that it appears that this location of Wahlburgers will open before location that is coming to MarketStreet Lynnfield; the BBJ states that the Fenway restaurant could be opening by the end of the year, while the Lynnfield outlet might not be open until the summer of 2015.

The article also mentions that locations of Wahlburgers are coming to Toronto [Ed Note: One location is now open in Toronto] as well as Philadelphia and Atlantic City.

[April 16 update: A PR Newswire press release gives a bit more information on the new Wahlburgers, including the fact that the Fenway location (as well as the Lynnfield location) will have a "sizable" outdoor patio, along with "full-serve and self-serve dining options, take-out, and a full bar."]

[July 3 update: A Boston Magazine interview with Paul Wahlberg brings up the fact that the new Wahlburgers will be located next to Yard House, with an April 2015 opening expected. A subsequent check on the Samuels & Associates site confirms the location, with the address for the new Wahlburgers being given as 132 Brookline Avenue. (An interesting side note: Two years ago, the Boston Hospitality and Tourism Industry Blog wondered whether it might be going into this space; it turns out that they were correct.)]

[December 4 update: The Boston Globe mentions that the Fenway location of Wahlburgers won't be opening in time for the start of the 2015 Boston Red Sox season after all.]

[May 7, 2015 update: The upcoming Wahlburgers in the Fenway will not be the second location to open in the Boston area after all (as had been hinted above), as a press release says the Lynnfield location will open in "Q2" of this year [ed note--now open], while the Fenway location won't open until "Q3" (presumably meaning July, August, or September).]

[September 25, 2015 update: Wahlburgers tells us that its grand opening for the Fenway location takes place on October 1, and that it is currently signing people up to watch the wahlstream on its website.]

[September 28, 2015 update: Based on a new Facebook post from Wahlburgers, the grand opening of the Fenway location is a VIP party that is apparently invite-only; the note says that the restaurant will actually be have its official opening sometime in early October.]

[September 29, 2015 update: A press release sent this afternoon indicates that Wahlburgers officially opens its Fenway location this Friday (October 2).]

Chef and restaurateur Paul Wahlberg and his celebrity brothers Mark and Donnie first opened Wahlburgers at the Hingham Shipyard in October of 2011.
