Confirmed: Drinking Fountain in Jamaica Plain Is Closing

[Ed note: This article was updated on August 9 to reflect confirmation of the bar's closure.]

It looks like yet another Boston dive bar is shutting down, and this bar was once picked as one of the best watering holes in America.

According to posters on Facebook (including one person in the restaurant industry), Drinking Fountain in Jamaica Plain is closing, as it has either been sold or soon will be, with a possible closing date sometime in the middle of the month. It is not known what the new owner has in mind for the Washington Street space at this point in time; as soon as we find out more, we will post an update here.

Based on an Eater Boston article, Drinking Fountain has been around in one form or another since at least 1945, and the current owners have run the place since 1977. In 2013, Esquire Magazine included it among its picks for best bars in America.

The address for Drinking Fountain is 3520 Washington Street, Jamaica Plain, MA, 02130.

Thanks to Patrick Maguire of Maguire Promotions & Hospitality Consulting for bringing this to our attention.
