Abington Depot Restaurant in North Abington Has Reopened

A suburban restaurant in an historic location that shut down late last year has been reborn.

According to a source (Wayne Tucker), the Abington Depot Restaurant in North Abington is open once again, with social media posts indicating that the Railroad Street spot is now under new ownership. The previous owners, who ran the place for 23 years, said in December that "We have been struggling to keep up with the soaring costs to operate and it is no longer feasible. Not the way I saw it ending, but it is the reality."

The space in which the Abington Depot Restaurant resides is an old passenger and freight railroad depot that goes back to the 1890s.

Abington Depot Restaurant in North Abington Is Closing

A restaurant south of Boston that is located in an historic building is shutting down.

According to a source, the Abington Depot Restaurant is closing its doors, with a Facebook post from the Railroad Street spot saying the following:

For 23 years, you have supported our staff, allowed us to be a part of your lives and helped to cement the Depot family in history. I am eternally grateful to have been a recipient or your generosity & kindness. Unfortunately, it is time for us to go. We have been struggling to keep up with the soaring costs to operate and it is no longer feasible. Not the way I saw it ending, but it is the reality.

Another Facebook post mentions that the dining spot plans to close on Saturday, December 17.

The Abington Depot Restaurant resides in a former passenger and freight railroad depot that dates back to the 1890s; the dining spot has been known as a family-friendly eatery over the years, offering such items as wings, nachos, quesadillas, French onion soup, burgers, American chop suey, macaroni and cheese, meatloaf, London broil, and pizza.

The Lobster Barn in Abington Is Closing

A seafood shack and fish market in the southern suburbs of Boston is shutting down after more than 30 years in business.

According to a source, the Lobster Barn in Abington is closing its doors, with a note on the website of the Hancock Street spot saying that "It's with a heavy heart the Lobster Barn will be closing September 18th. We would like to thank our loyal customers for supporting us over the years. Thank you!" No reason has been given for its closure, nor is it known what might become of the space; as soon as we find out more, we will post an update.

The Lobster Barn, which first opened back in 1991, is known for its classic New England seafood dishes along with retail seafood offerings to cook at home.

Teffy's Restaurant in Brockton Is Expanding to Abington

A Salvadoran and Mexican restaurant south of Boston is planning to open a new location, with this one also being south of the city.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Teffy's Restaurant in Brockton is expanding to Abington, with a Facebook post from the business saying that "ABINGTON MA HERE WE GO....WE ARE HAPPY TO ANOUNCE TEFFY’S RESTAURANT & BAR IS COMING TO ABINGTON....Food, Drinks, Dj ,Latin music....VIP Space....We are so excited" The original Teffy's, which is located at 74 W Elm Street, offers such items as papusas, tacos, tortas, fajitas, quesadillas, enchiladas, tamales, burritos, flan, and more.

Luci's Pizza Bar Opens within Webster Timber Lanes in Abington

Last summer, it was reported that a bowling alley in the southern suburbs of Boston was planning to open a new pizza spot inside the space. Now we have learned that this has indeed happened, though with a different name.

According to an article from Eater Boston, Luci's Pizza Bar is now open within Webster Timber Lanes in Abington, with the new spot offering pizza, salads, appetizers, sandwiches, desserts, craft beer, and cocktails, based on the menu for the spot. It initially looked like the name of the place would be Jive Pizza Bar, but a name change apparently took place at some point in time.

In addition to the new restaurant, Webster Timber Lanes features candlepin bowling along with an arcade area, while it can also be rented out for events and parties.

Jive Pizza Bar to Open in Abington

A new pizza spot appears to be on its way to the southern suburbs of Boston.

According to a post within the jobs section of bostonchefs.com, Jive Pizza Bar is planning to open in Abington and is currently looking to hire workers for the place. Little information has been given on the upcoming spot other than the post stating it will be a new restaurant concept that features a pizza bar menu, though a map at the bottom of the job post shows a waypoint for Timber Lanes Bowling, so it is possible that Jive could be opening within the Bedford Street space. (As soon as we confirm this, we will post an update here.)

If Jive Pizza Bar does open inside Timber Lanes Bowling, the address for the restaurant would be 460 Bedford Street (Route 18), Abington, MA, 02351.

[August 29 update: Based on several other job posts over the past couple of weeks, it looks like Jive Pizza Bar will indeed be opening inside Timber Lanes Bowling.]

Sarcastic Swine BBQ Restaurant and Catering Opens in Abington

A brand new barbecue spot has opened in the southern suburbs of Boston.

According to a source, Sarcastic Swine BBQ Restaurant and Catering is now open in Abington, with the Bedford Street dining spot offering such options as hush puppies, wings, macaroni and cheese, brisket, ribs, pulled pork, burritos, and pulled chicken. Based on its Facebook posts, it appears that Sarcastic Swine debuted to the public on March 16.

Giardino's Italian Steak House and Sushi Bar Opens in Former Great Chow Space in Abington

A new restaurant with a rather eclectic menu has replaced a popular South Shore spot.

According to a source (@HomebrewedDwarf), Giardino's Italian Steak House and Sushi Bar is now open in Abington, taking over the space on Route 18 where Great Chow had been. The menu at the new eatery includes such items as soups, salads, subs and sandwiches, pasta dishes, pizza, risotto, steak and seafood options, and sushi (including all-you-can-eat sushi), and it looks like the place also has a full liquor license.

Great Chow closed down in March after being in business for approximately 10 years, with the restaurant offering mostly Chinese and Japanese fare. (Another location of Great Chow can be found in the Wollaston section of Quincy.)

Double Horse Bistro Opens in Abington

A new restaurant featuring classic American fare with global influences has opened south of Boston.

According to a post from Eater Boston, Double Horse Bistro is now open in Abington, with the Brockton Avenue eatery featuring "modern American Asian" items for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The menu at the new spot includes omelets, breakfast and lunch sandwiches, salads, soups, burgers, and main dishes, with a few options being lobster rangoon, Saigon crispy roll, banh mi, ahi tuna wrap, Cubanos, chicken katsu po'boys, pho, vermicelli bowls, falafel, and Hawaiian fried rice.

J.P. Ryan's Tavern in Abington Reopens After Car Crashes into Storefront

A sports bar south of Boston is open once again after a car smashed into the place.

According to an article in Wicked Local Abington, J.P. Ryan's Tavern on Brockton Avenue received extensive damage to its foundation and brick structure Wednesday morning after a Honda Civic drove into the front of the business, with the car apparently crashing into the front door. A Facebook post from the drinking spot early in the afternoon indicated that it was given clearance to open by a building inspector and the place reopened around 2:00 PM yesterday.

The article says that the driver was uninjured in the crash.

Sorelle Bar & Grill in Abington to Open in Former Vin & Eddie's Space

Earlier this year, we reported that an iconic Italian restaurant south of Boston was closing and would be replaced by a new Italian eatery. Now we have learned that the upcoming dining spot may be getting close to opening.

According to an article in Wicked Local Abington, Sorelle Bar & Grill is hoping to open in the old Vin & Eddie's space sometime in November and that renovations are currently underway. The post indicates that chef/owner Andrea Schnell plans to make the new restaurant more of a modern Italian spot than the old-school Vin & Eddie's had been, though the place will retain some of the touches of the previous restaurant, as parts of the space are being re-purposed. Schnell and Sorelle general manager Mark Doherty were co-workers at the Square Cafe in Hingham before deciding to open their own restaurant.

Vin & Eddie's, had been in business since 1955.

[November 24 update: A new article in Wicked Local Abington indicates that Sorelle Bar & Grill will likely not be opening in November, as Andrea Schnell says "Originally the plan was to do a remodel, but when the contractors opened the place up it became apparent that we had to do an extensive structural remodel to make it work for our plan....It is going to delay us, but we are really excited because now it’s going to be even newer, better and bigger."]

Vin & Eddie's in Abington Is Closing; Sorelle Bar & Grill Plans to Replace It

An Italian restaurant on the South Shore that first opened its doors more than 60 years ago is closing for good, and a new dining spot is looking to take over the space.

According to one of its owners, Vin & Eddie's in Abington is planning to shut down at an as-of-yet unknown date, with the restaurant being replaced by Sorelle Bar & Grill, confirming what a few sources have been telling us over the past several weeks. The owner of the new eatery is Andrea Schnell, who has been Executive Chef of the Square Cafe, a French-influenced bistro located in Hingham Center.

Vin & Eddie's, which first opened in 1955, has been known as a place to go to for its mix of Northern and Southern Italian dishes along with its many wine options.

[May 25 update: According to a Facebook post from the restaurant, Vin & Eddie's closes its doors forever at the end of business hours Friday (May 27).]

[May 27 update: A new Facebook post from the restaurant indicates that Vin & Eddie's has already closed and will not open for one final day today, as its inventory was "depleted" yesterday. Another link from the Abington Wicked Local mentions that Sorelle Bar & Grill hopes to move into the space in September and that it will also be an Italian restaurant, though with modern touches. (It also looks like most of the Vin & Eddie's workers will stay on, working at Sorelle when it opens.)]
