Back in June, it was reported that a non-profit restaurant that had closed its doors would be reopening, and now we have learned that it is up and running once again--and some changes have come with the opening.
According to a press release, Haley House Bakery Cafe in Roxbury's Nubian Square (formerly Dudley Square) has soft-opened, with a grand reopening slated to take place on February 1. The release mentions that the Dade Street eatery now has a new general manager and business plan, a new menu that includes bowl-based meals along with some old favorites, a renovated interior, and a new "Friends of Haley House Bakery Cafe" initiative in which locals in the community offer financial support to the place, though the overall mission of the cafe--to help support the Roxbury community in a variety of ways, including the training and employing of local residents who are faced with limited work options--remains the same.

Haley House Bakery Cafe in Roxbury Is Reopening
Earlier this year, it was learned that a beloved non-profit restaurant was shutting down after nearly 15 years in business, though at the time it was hoped that the place could reopen at some point. Now we have learned that it will indeed be returning.
According to Facebook posts from the spot, Haley House Bakery Cafe in Roxbury''s Dudley Square plans to reopen later this year and is now looking to hire a General Manager for the Dade Street eatery. The Facebook page also shows that the cafe wishes to know what the community needs and wants as it gets ready to relaunch, having a link to a survey within the page. A specific reopening date has not been given as of yet, so stay tuned for updates as they come in.

Jazz Urbane Cafe Could Be Opening in Roxbury's Dudley Square

About a year ago, we reported that a new restaurant featuring live music could be coming to an increasingly-hot section of Roxbury. Now we have learned a bit more about the upcoming place.
According to an article from Universal Hub, musician and Berklee College of Music professor William Banfield is planning to open JazzUrbane Cafe within the historic Bolling Building in Dudley Square, with the place featuring food and live entertainment at night while being a space for arts organizations and community groups during the day. Banfield mentions in a statement that "I am excited for the opportunity to create a truly unique experience in Roxbury, to bring back jazz to Dudley Square, and build an establishment that will become a destination for all residents and visitors," while a Boston Magazine article says that Banfield also states the place will be "designed to bring neighbors together and celebrate through the shared love of food, art, and community in a warm and inviting venue." No opening date has been given for JazzUrbane Cafe, so stay tuned for updates.
The Bolling Building is currently home to Soleil restaurant and Dudley Cafe, though two other dining spots--Dudley Dough and Tasty Burger--no longer reside in the structure, which dates back to the 1880s.

Haley House Bakery Cafe in Roxbury to Close; Hopes to Reopen Later This Year

A non-profit restaurant that first opened nearly 15 years ago is shutting down, though the hope is for it to eventually return.
According to a post from the Boston Hospitality and Tourism Industry Blog, Haley House Bakery Cafe in Roxbury''s Dudley Square is closing, with a Facebook post from the place saying that "After careful consideration, Haley House has decided to engage in a re-visioning process to review and renew our business concept. Following Community Tables on Sat. Jan 12th, we will temporarily suspend restaurant operations going forward, with the goal of reopening later in the year." The note goes on to say that the catering and wholesale operations will continue along with its Take Back the Kitchen cooking and nutrition program, and their hosting of the 11th Annual Souper Bowl will still take place on February 10.

Soleil Opens in Roxbury's Dudley Square

A new restaurant with Southern influences is in the process of opening where a location of a burger spot had been.
According to an article from The Bay State Banner, Soleil has soft-opened in the Dudley Square section of Roxbury, with owner Cheryl Straughter and her team adjusting the menu and refining the workflow during the soft launch of the restaurant, which is located inside the historic Bolling Building. As hinted at in an earlier article here, Soleil isn't specifically a Southern restaurant, but more "a Southern thing with a twist," according to Straughter, with items such as oven-roasted carrots with a honey glaze, collard greens with kale, fried chicken, and grilled salmon being a few of the offerings. It is not known if/when the dining spot might have a grand opening event, so stay tuned for updates.
The Dudley Square location of Tasty Burger shut down in January after being in business for a bit less than two years.

Changes Coming to Roxbury's Dudley Square, as Dudley Dough Closes, Tasty Burger to Close, Four New Restaurants to Open

One of the busiest sections of Roxbury is in the midst of some major changes within its dining scene.
According to an article in The Bay State Banner, Tasty Burger in Roxbury's Dudley Square is apparently closing in early 2018, joining Dudley Dough, another eatery within the historic Bolling Building which shut down for good last week. The post says that both spaces may not be empty for long, however, as a new pizza spot called 119 plans to open in the Dudley Dough space with the manager of Dudley Dough also managing this spot, while the person behind the long-closed Keith's Place in Grove Hall will open a Southern-influenced restaurant called Soleil in the Tasty Burger space. In addition, an as-of-yet unnamed restaurant featuring live music is in the works for the Bolling Building as well, while a coffee shop tentatively called Ethiopian Flavor plans to open at the corner of Shawmut Avenue and Malcolm X Boulevard, with that spot being run by the owner of Fasika, an Ethiopian eatery in Somerville.
The article says that 119 could open in February while Soleil plans to open sometime in 2018; it is not yet known when Ethiopian Flavor and the proposed restaurant and music spot might open.

It looks like a pizza shop affiliated with a nonprofit restaurant and organization is shutting down.
According to a post from Universal Hub, Dudley Dough in Roxbury is closing by the end of the year, with a note from Haley House (which is behind it) saying that because sales have not met expectations, the organization will not be able to continue subsidizing the Washington Street shop because it could end up jeopardizing the future of Haley House itself.
Dudley Dough, which first opened two years ago, is connected to the South End-based Haley House as well as Haley House Bakery Cafe on Dade Street near Dudley Dough. The organization has been helping the homeless, the working poor, and others who face struggles since the mid 1960s.

Dudley Dough Opens in Roxbury

The eatery, which is located within the Bolling Building in Roxbury's Dudley Square, is connected with Haley House Bakery Cafe, a dining spot that resides on nearby Dade Street, and Haley House itself, a South End-based non-profit organization that has been helping the homeless, the working poor, and others facing struggles since the mid 1960s.
Dudley Dough joins another dining spot in the Bolling Building--Dudley Cafe, which is Solmon Chowdhury of Shanti in Dorchester and Roslindale and Moksa/Naga in Cambridge--and a location of Tasty Burger is also being planned for the space as well.
Hours today for Dudley Dough are 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM, though it is not yet known if these are its permanent hours.

New Restaurants Could be Coming to Dudley Square in Roxbury
An historic building in the heart of Roxbury is being restored--and the people behind several restaurants in the Boston area are interested in moving in.
The Boston Globe is reporting that the Ferdinand Building in Dudley Square is going to be rehabilitated, with the plans being to bring offices, residences, a market, shops, hotels, and restaurants to the structure. Some of the businesses that are looking at the space include Bon Me, Parish Cafe, Tasty Burger, Salvatore's, and others, with the winning bidders being picked by a committee that is made up of a mix of neighborhood representatives and city officials. The article says that the renovated building is expected to open sometime next year.
