New Facebook Question: Whole Belly Clams v. Clam Strips

Every day our sister site (Boston's Hidden Restaurants) tries to post a new question for fans on Facebook, and the question today definitely seems to be revving folks up.

Today's question focuses on clams--namely, do you prefer whole belly clams or clam strips? So far, whole belly clams appear to be well in the lead, though this could certainly change, as the votes continue to pour in.

Our Articles Can Now Be Shared on LinkedIn

To help make it easier to share our blog articles with others, we started adding both a Twitter "Share" button and a Facebook "Like" button to the bottom of each post awhile back. And now there is a new way to share stories with your friends, namely via a LinkedIn button.

If you look at the bottom of this page (as well as pages from earlier this week), you will notice the new "Share" button (labeled "in share") to the right of the Twitter and Facebook buttons. For those of you who are members of LinkedIn, click the button and when the popup window comes up, add a comment about the article, then click "Share." The article will then be posted on your LinkedIn page.

"Gargoyles Afterlife" Page Is Up and Running on Facebook

Last week, we told you about the closing of a popular upscale restaurant in the Davis Square section of Somerville. Well, thanks to Facebook, you will now be able to follow where the members of the restaurant staff go after the place shuts down tomorrow.

A poster on the Chowhound site has mentioned that an email sent by Gargoyles on the Square directs folks to the "Gargoyles Afterlife" page on Facebook, which is where you can "follow up on the future staff whereabouts" in the future, according to the poster. Gargoyles Afterlife is a group page where you are required to ask to join the group, with the page currently consisting of about 170 members (as of Monday morning, September 19). Gargoyles recently announced that the Elm Street eatery would be closing its doors on Tuesday, September 20 [ED NOTE: According to the restaurant, Gargoyles closed Sunday night, September 18], after being in business for more than 15 years. One of the founders of the restaurant is hoping to open a new eatery in Arlington, while the current Gargoyles space will be home to a Mexican dining spot opened by the person behind the nearby Pizzeria Posto.

[November 2 update: Gargoyles restaurant may be closed, but according to the Gargoyles Afterlife page, their catering operation is still in business. If you would like to get in touch with them, their phone number is (781) 777-1798.]

Facebook Ends Daily Deals, Yelp Cutting Back Its Deals Service

The ultra-crowded online-coupon market became a bit less crowded this week, as one major website has shut down its daily deals service, while another is greatly cutting back.

According to Bloomberg, Facebook decided to end its Facebook Deals service last week, while Yelp announced yesterday that it will cut its sales staff for Yelp Deals by 50%. The article mentions that in July alone, 38 daily-deal sites shut down, with the industry having a 7% revenue drop from June in major North American markets (information supplied to Bloomberg by Yipit Inc.). Currently, Groupon and LivingSocial seem to be the two major players in the industry, which includes discounts on restaurants, bars, hotels, retail shops, services, and more.

Facebook began their deals service this past spring, while Yelp started its deals program last summer.

A Twitter List of Boston-Area Restaurants on the Site

A little while back we created a list of Boston-area restaurant that are on Twitter for our Facebook page. This list basically shows an alphabetical listing of all the area restaurants that have joined Twitter. This week, however, we used this list of restaurants to create a list within our Twitter page, and this one has one big advantage over the list on Facebook, namely that it shows postings from these restaurants in live time, which means you can go to the list and get the latest updates on daily specials, events, and other news.

How to Suggest Our Facebook Fan Page to Others

Over the past few weeks, the Facebook Fan Page for Boston's Hidden Restaurants and Boston Restaurant Talk has blossomed, with nearly 2,000 new fans joining the page. Many of these new fans discovered the fan page by having others suggest the page to them.

For those who don't know how to suggest a fan page to friends, Facebook makes it easy to do. In the case of our fan page, all you have to do is head over to our page on Facebook, go to the upper left part of the page where our profile picture is (the picture of the hamburger and fries), and click on the link directly below the picture--the one that says "Suggest to Friends." Once you click on the link, a popup window will come up. This window gives thumbnail photos of all of your friends on Facebook. All you need to do at this point is to highlight each friend who you would like to suggest the page to, then click the "Send Invitations" button.

Lately, we have been concentrating more on our Facebook Fan Page, however, as it has a lot more flexibility than our Twitter page. We use our Facebook page to post questions for fans, give reminders on updated reviews, post "mystery" restaurant photos for people to try to guess, and much more. As of today (October 20, 2009), we have just under 2,300 Facebook fans who are involved with our page. With all those folks on board, we are getting many, many responses and suggestions about restaurants in the Boston area and beyond. A little while ago, we created a list of Boston-area restaurants that are on the Twitter site. We now have a list of restaurants throughout the rest of New England that are also on Twitter.

Both the New England list and the Boston-area list are within our Facebook fan page, but anyone can see these lists, including those who are not yet Facebook members.

Twitter seems to be everywhere in the news today, and for good reason; with texting taking off over the past couple of years, this social networking site has tapped into something big, and it has become one of the hottest sites out there right now.

But Twitter is not just about sending short messages to friends and family; indeed, businesses are also using the site as a form of free promotion. And restaurants certainly have been finding ways to use Twitter in a variety of ways, including a quickly-growing number in the Boston area.

We have compiled a fairly comprehensive list of Boston-area restaurants that are on Twitter.
