The Grand Opens in Boston's Seaport District

by Marc Hurwitz

A luxury nightclub that has been a long time in the making opens today on the Boston waterfront.

According to a press release, The Grand debuts tonight at One Seaport Square in the city's Seaport District, with its Facebook page stating that "Glamour and sophistication meets high energy" at the new place, with the club including an open glass staircase, custom marble tables, and hand-blown glass chandeliers along with stadium VIP bottle seating, VIP bars, and  a 70-foot LED wall. As stated earlier, Big Night Entertainment Group is behind the spot, and BNEG is also opening another new place tomorrow in the same building--Scorpion Bar, which is described as a "traditional Mexican tequila cantina with the attitude of a rock bar."

Plans for both The Grand and Scorpion Bar were first announced in September of 2015.

The address for The Grand is 58 Seaport Boulevard, Boston, MA, 02210. Its website can be found at http://thegrandboston.com/

Prose in Arlington Has Closed

An eclectic upscale restaurant in Arlington whose owner had briefly considered shutting its doors about a year ago has decided to close for good.

According to The Arlington Advocate and Wicked Local, Prose on Mass. Ave. (just east of Arlington Center) shut down on New Year's Eve after being in business for about 15 years, citing economic demands. As reported in an earlier article here, the owner had been looking to close the restaurant in December of 2009 due to financial issues, but customers contributed money to help her stay open. This time, however, the closure is permanent, The Advocate says.

Prose was known for its inventive seasonal menu that featured such items as grilled octopus, spaetzle, spicy pork belly, roasted sea bass, stewed chicken, short ribs, and flan. The restaurant also did some catering.

The address for this now-closed restaurant in Arlington was: Prose, 352 Massachusetts Avenue, Arlington, MA, 02474.

For more information on the closing of Prose in Arlington, please go to the Arlington Advocate/Wicked Local link below.

News in the Leather District Closes

News, an upscale restaurant and lounge in the Leather District of Boston, has closed its doors. This trendy dining spot and watering hole near South Station and Chinatown shut down about a week ago with little fanfare.

News was mostly popular with a younger crowd due in part to the fact that it was open late and had a varied drink menu. It also featured a "Ladies Night" on Wednesdays. The food at News was mostly upscale American and pub grub.

It is not known at the present time what will be going into the space vacated by News.

Excelsior in Boston Has Closed

Thanks very much to a poster on the Chowhound site for bringing to our attention the fact that Excelsior in Boston has closed. A high-end restaurant on Boylston Street across from the Public Gardens, Excelsior featured mostly New American cuisine as well an extensive wine list (and an actual three-story wine tower within the restaurant) that included hundreds of different wines. Excelsior first opened its doors in 2003 and went on to become one of Boston's most popular restaurants.

UPDATE: According to the Excelsior Web site, the restaurant has officially closed and will re-open as another dining spot sometime this fall.

Restaurant Openings, Closings - September, 2008

There have been a number of restaurant closings in the Boston area over the past few weeks, as well as a few openings of new restaurants.

Included in the former are Aneka Rasa, a Malaysian restaurant in Allston that has closed; Sabor Do Brasil, a Brazilian restaurant between Porter Square and Union Square in Somerville; and Eastern Pier II, a Chinese restaurant in the Seaport District of South Boston.

In the latter category are Max & Dylan's, a restuarant in downtown Boston that just opened; BurgerWorks, a burger joint in North Beverly; Roadhouse BBQ, a barbecue joint in Brookline; and T-Rex Taqueria, a Mexican restaurant, also in Brookline.

More closings and openings seem to be happening nearly every day, so keep checking back on this site for more updates, or go to our Restaurant Closings and Openings in the Boston Area section within the Boston's Hidden Restaurants site.

(Thanks to Chowhound and the Salem News for bringing some of these to our attention.))

La Brace and Takeshima Leave the Boston Restaurant Scene

Two more Boston-area restaurants have closed their doors, though one of them is more or less re-opening intact, but with a new name.

La Brace, an Italian restaurant on Salem Street in the North End of Boston, has closed after a relatively short time on the Boston restaurant scene. No word as of yet on what is moving into this spot.

Takeshima, a Japanese restaurant on Harvard Street in the Coolidge Corner section of Brookline, has also served their last meal, though a new restaurant called Blue Ocean is now in its place, serving mostly similar food (Japanese and Korean).

There will surely be more restaurant closings (and openings) in the Boston area as time goes on, so be sure to check back here for updates, or go to the following link on Boston's Hidden Restaurants for an extensive list of restaurants closings and openings:
