Cardullo's in Cambridge's Harvard Square Expanding to Boston's Seaport District

by Marc Hurwitz

It looks like an iconic grocery store in Cambridge will be joined by a second shop on the Boston waterfront.

The Boston Herald is reporting that Cardullo's in Harvard Square is planning to open in the Seaport District, with a licensing board page mentioning that the Brattle Street shop is eyeing a space in an office tower on Seaport Boulevard that is also home to such spots as Aceituna Grill, by Chloe, Tikkaway Grill, and Yoki Express. Few details are known about the proposed store in the Seaport District other than the fact that it plans to sell alcohol, so keep checking back for updates.

Cardullo's, which first opened in 1950, is a gourmet market that sells a variety of cheese, chocolate products, honey, spices, coffee, tea, liquor, pasta, sandwiches, and more. The store changed hands in 2015, with Kim and Richard Wilson purchasing it from the Cardullo family.

The address for the original Cardullo's is 6 Brattle Street in Harvard Square, while the address for the upcoming shop in the Seaport District is 101 Seaport Boulevard. (Its website can be found at http://www.cardullos.com/)

[January 18 update: Eater Boston states that the new location of Cardullo's in the Seaport District will be similar to its Harvard Square shop, though it will also offer small batch spirits and it will include a deli that sells breakfast sandwiches in the morning as well as sandwiches, salads, charcuterie, and cheese at lunch.]

[June 22 update: A tweet from @FortPointer mentions that Cardullo's has opened in the Seaport District.]

A Public Seafood Market Could Be Coming to the Raymond Flynn Marine Park on the South Boston Waterfront

by Marc Hurwitz

It looks like Boston may just be getting its first public seafood market.

Universal Hub is reporting (via a letter of intent from Pilot Development Partners that a development which would include a retail seafood market along with two or three seafood wholesalers is being proposed for the Raymond Flynn Marine Park along the eastern edge of the city's Seaport District. The space, which is located near where Fid Kennedy Avenue and Tide Street meet along the South Boston waterfront, would also include a garage as well--and the garage would be a mixed-use building that would house the public seafood market.

The letter mentions that Boston Sword & Tuna, which is located on nearby Seafood Way, is one of the wholesalers planning to move into the development, as it has outgrown its space.

[December 22 update: According to a Twitter post from @jonchesto, it appears that the seafood market may be more of a cafe or a food stand, with another tweet from him saying it may be about 2,500 square feet in size and that all of the seafood sold will be from the wholesalers within the development.]

Frank Anthony's Gourmet Market to Open at Fan Pier on the Boston Waterfront

A new market is on its way to the Boston waterfront, and the person behind it also operates a grocery/convenience store in the North End that has been around for more than a quarter century.

The Boston Herald is reporting that Frank Anthony's Gourmet Market plans to open at 11 Fan Pier (just east of the Moakley Courthouse), with the 2,500-square-foot shop being what owner Frank Scire calls a "21st-century corner market." The article says that Scire also runs Going Bananas, which first opened on Salem Street 28 years ago and offers produce, meats and cheeses, sandwiches, and smoothies.

If all goes as planned, the new Frank Anthony's Gourmet Market should be opening late this summer, according to the Herald.

[December 9 update: Frank Anthony's Gourmet Market is not yet open, but a licensing board page within the City of Boston website indicates that it could be one step closer to opening by next week, as the board will look into the market's request for a common victualler license on Wednesday, December 14.]

Residential Tower Proposed at Site of Atlantic Beer Garden and The Whiskey Priest in Boston's Seaport District

Yet another new development may be on its way to the Seaport District of Boston, and it would be built where a couple of bars currently reside.

According to a Twitter post from @SteveAdamsTweet of Banker & Tradesman, the Cronin Group/Cronin Holdings has proposed an "iconic" 22-story residential tower at the site of Atlantic Beer Garden and The Whiskey Priest where Northern Avenue and Seaport Boulevard meet, with the renderings showing what appears to be restaurant/retail space on the ground floor. It appears to be too early to know about the exact future of Atlantic Beer Garden or The Whiskey Priest if the tower is approved; as soon as we find out more, we will post an update here. (The Cronin Group operates both places.)

Atlantic Beer Garden and The Whiskey Priest took over the former Eastern Pier II/Seaport Bar and Grille space approximately seven years ago; in addition to these two spots, the Cronin Group also runs such places as Jerry Remy's, Temazcal, and Tony C's.

[December 21 update: An article from Banker & Tradesman says that the two bars would be "demolished" to make way for the new tower, though it is still not known whether they might reopen within the development. (The post also says that there would be restaurant and retail space on the first two floors of the tower.)]

[August 10, 2016 update: The Boston Globe is now reporting that The Conservation Law Foundation may sue Cronin Holdings over the proposal for a tower at the site of Atlantic Beer Garden and The Whiskey Priest because of possible violations of state law concerning public access and development along the shore.]
