Cardullo's in Cambridge's Harvard Square Expanding to Boston's Seaport District

by Marc Hurwitz

It looks like an iconic grocery store in Cambridge will be joined by a second shop on the Boston waterfront.

The Boston Herald is reporting that Cardullo's in Harvard Square is planning to open in the Seaport District, with a licensing board page mentioning that the Brattle Street shop is eyeing a space in an office tower on Seaport Boulevard that is also home to such spots as Aceituna Grill, by Chloe, Tikkaway Grill, and Yoki Express. Few details are known about the proposed store in the Seaport District other than the fact that it plans to sell alcohol, so keep checking back for updates.

Cardullo's, which first opened in 1950, is a gourmet market that sells a variety of cheese, chocolate products, honey, spices, coffee, tea, liquor, pasta, sandwiches, and more. The store changed hands in 2015, with Kim and Richard Wilson purchasing it from the Cardullo family.

The address for the original Cardullo's is 6 Brattle Street in Harvard Square, while the address for the upcoming shop in the Seaport District is 101 Seaport Boulevard. (Its website can be found at http://www.cardullos.com/)

[January 18 update: Eater Boston states that the new location of Cardullo's in the Seaport District will be similar to its Harvard Square shop, though it will also offer small batch spirits and it will include a deli that sells breakfast sandwiches in the morning as well as sandwiches, salads, charcuterie, and cheese at lunch.]

[June 22 update: A tweet from @FortPointer mentions that Cardullo's has opened in the Seaport District.]

The Comedy Studio Is Moving from Cambridge's Harvard Square to Bow Market in Somerville's Union Square

by Marc Hurwitz

A few months ago, we reported that a legendary comedy club in Cambridge was closing down and looking for a new home. Now we have learned that it will be moving to an upcoming development in Somerville.

According to an article from Cambridge Day, the Comedy Studio in Harvard Square is leaving its current location above the Hong Kong Restaurant on Mass. Ave. at the end of the year and plans to reopen at Bow Market between Somerville Avenue and Bow Street in Union Square. The comedy club will join a number of other businesses coming to the development--which is currently under construction--including vendors at more than 30 stalls as well as a brewery called Remnant Brewing. (The stalls will include Jaju Pierogi, Maca Macaronerie, Buenas, North South, and more.)

The Comedy Studio, which is leaving Harvard Square in part due to rising rents, has helped launched the careers of some big names since opening in the mid-1990s, including Bill Burr and Emma Willmann, and it has also hosted such well-known comedians as Sarah Silverman and Colin Jost over the years.

The website for the Comedy Studio can be found at http://www.thecomedystudio.com/

Thanks to @Fara1 for bringing this to our attention.

[August 26, 2018 update: An events page indicates that The Comedy Studio officially opens in Somerville on September 6.]

Update: Market In the Square in Cambridge's Harvard Square Seized by Sheriff's Department; Will Reopen as Wholesome Fresh

by Marc Hurwitz

[Ed note: This article was update on November 9 to reflect a different name given for the place.]

A grocer and convenience store in one of the busiest parts of Cambridge has been forced to shut down, though the space will not be empty for long.

A Twitter post from megansarahj (via @bonjourcass) shows that Market in the Square in Harvard Square has been seized, with orange signs being posted in the doors of the Church Street shop. Another tweet indicates that the market has been seized by the sheriff's department, while Cambridge Day is now reporting that a spot tentatively called Hello Fresh will be taking over the space and will be nearly identical to Market in the Square, though it will not offer alcohol--at least initially.

Last month we reported that the new business was planning to open in the Market in the Square space, and as was the case with Market in the Square, it is planning to be open 24/7.

The address for Market in the Square/Hello Fresh is 60 Church Street, Cambridge, MA, 02138.

[November 7 update: The Harvard Crimson states that Market in the Square was seized by the Middlesex County Sheriff's Department for nonpayment of rent.]

[November 9 update: Cambridge Day mentions that the name of the place will actually be Wholesome Fresh and that it could be opening in a couple of weeks.]

Cabot's Candy in Provincetown Has Opened in Cambridge's Harvard Square

A Cape Cod candy shop that got its start nearly 90 years ago has quietly opened in one of the busiest parts of Cambridge.

A message sent from the place indicates that Cabot's Candy in Provincetown is now open on Mass. Ave. in Harvard Square, with the shop initially opening its doors sometime last week. Based on its original store on Commercial Street in the heart of Ptown, expect to see a variety of salt water taffy at the new shop, along with fudge, peanut brittle, popcorn, and more.

According to its Facebook page, the original Cabot's candy shop in Provincetown has been around since 1927, making it one of the oldest stores in town. It is located across from Town Hall and about a block south of the Pilgrim Monument.

The address for the new location of Cabot's Candy in Harvard Square is 1300 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, MA, 02138. The Facebook page for the new shop is at https://www.facebook.com/cabotscandycambridge while the website for the original store is at http://www.cabotscandy.com/

[August 14 update: A message from Cabot's indicates that their candy is actually being sold out of a jewelry shop and a clothing store in Cambridge; the post says that the owners of Zinnia Jewelry and Tula Boutique (both of which are in the same building and share an entrance) have decided to sell Cabot's candy instead so the clothes and jewelry have apparently been put aside and the candy is now in place. Cabot's also says that their grand opening party will take place tomorrow (Saturday, August 15).]

Cardullo's in Cambridge's Harvard Square Is Being Sold

An iconic grocery store in the heart of Cambridge's Harvard Square will soon be under new ownership.

Cambridge Day is reporting that Cardullo's on Brattle Street is being sold to Kim and Richard Wilson, who are "fleeing big business" (Kim has recently worked at Staples while Richard has worked at BJ's Wholesale Club). The article says that the changeover will mark the first time in its 65-year history that there won't be anyone from the Cardullo family fully involved with the store, though current co-owner Donez Cardullo-Tavilla does say that she will help out during the holidays. Both the Wilsons and the Cardullos will work together to make the transition a smooth one, with the sale of the shop slated to become official sometime in August.

[July 14 update: According to an article in the Cambridge Chronicle and TAB, the sale of Cardullo's should be finalized in the next four to six weeks (as soon as the liquor license transfer takes place), with the name and concept of the place remaining the same.]

Cardullo's, which first opened in 1950, is a gourmet market that sells a variety of cheese, chocolate products, honey, spices, coffee, tea, liquor, pasta, sandwiches, and more.

The address for Cardullo's is 6 Brattle Street, Cambridge, MA, 02138. Its website can be found at http://www.cardullos.com/
