Cardullo's in Cambridge's Harvard Square Expanding to Boston's Seaport District

by Marc Hurwitz

It looks like an iconic grocery store in Cambridge will be joined by a second shop on the Boston waterfront.

The Boston Herald is reporting that Cardullo's in Harvard Square is planning to open in the Seaport District, with a licensing board page mentioning that the Brattle Street shop is eyeing a space in an office tower on Seaport Boulevard that is also home to such spots as Aceituna Grill, by Chloe, Tikkaway Grill, and Yoki Express. Few details are known about the proposed store in the Seaport District other than the fact that it plans to sell alcohol, so keep checking back for updates.

Cardullo's, which first opened in 1950, is a gourmet market that sells a variety of cheese, chocolate products, honey, spices, coffee, tea, liquor, pasta, sandwiches, and more. The store changed hands in 2015, with Kim and Richard Wilson purchasing it from the Cardullo family.

The address for the original Cardullo's is 6 Brattle Street in Harvard Square, while the address for the upcoming shop in the Seaport District is 101 Seaport Boulevard. (Its website can be found at http://www.cardullos.com/)

[January 18 update: Eater Boston states that the new location of Cardullo's in the Seaport District will be similar to its Harvard Square shop, though it will also offer small batch spirits and it will include a deli that sells breakfast sandwiches in the morning as well as sandwiches, salads, charcuterie, and cheese at lunch.]

[June 22 update: A tweet from @FortPointer mentions that Cardullo's has opened in the Seaport District.]

Bee's Knees Supply Company in Boston's Fort Point Up for Auction

Earlier this year, we reported that a gourmet market in one of Boston's hottest neighborhoods was seized by the state for nonpayment of taxes. Now it appears that the shop will not be reopening again.

According to a tweet from @DGoodison, Bee's Knees Supply Company in Fort Point is going on the auction block on Wednesday, April 26, with a post from E.F. Smith & Son saying that a variety of new and used equipment will be available which will be sold on the premises of the Farnsworth Street space starting at 11:00 AM. In January, we had mentioned that the shop was locked up and dark, and one day later it was learned that a "Seized" sign was out front saying that it was in the possession of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Bee's Knees first opened in Fort Point in March of 2013, while a second shop (which has since closed as well) opened on Commonwealth Avenue in Allston two years later.

The address for the now-closed Bee's Knees Supply Company in Fort Point was 12 Farnsworth Street, Boston, MA, 02210.

Update: Bee's Knees Supply Company in Boston's Fort Point Seized by the State

[Ed note: This article was updated on January 5 to reflect the fact that a "seized" sign is now in the window of the place.]

A gourmet market in one of Boston's hottest neighborhoods is locked up and dark, and it is not yet known if/when it might reopen.

According to a Twitter post, Bee's Knees Supply Company in Fort Point appears to be closed, with a source telling us that it was shuttered all of last week as well as yesterday morning. Phone calls placed to the Farnsworth Street store over the past couple of days have gone directly to voicemail, and a check on its website indicates that it is down.

Bee's Knees first opened in Fort Point in March of 2013, while a second shop opened on Commonwealth Avenue in Allston two years later. The Fort Point shop apparently went up for sale in late 2015, while the Allston shop closed last summer.

As soon as we find out why the Fort Point location of Bee's Knees is closed, we will post an update here.

The address for Bee's Knees Supply Company in Fort Point is 12 Farnsworth Street, Boston, MA.

[January 5 update: According to a Twitter post from @JeremyKrantz, there is now a "seized" sign out front at Bee's Knees, with the sign saying the store is in the possession of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts because of nonpayment of taxes.]

Bee's Knees Supply Company in Allston Could Be Reopening

Last week, we reported that a gourmet market in Allston had abruptly shut down and its windows papered over. Now we have learned that the store may be returning.

According to an article from Eater Boston, the closure of Bee's Knees Supply Company on Commonwealth Avenue appears to be only temporary, as an ownership change has taken place and the space is now being renovated, with some updates coming to the menu as well--though the overall concept of the shop will not change. Last Wednesday, a Twitter post from Bee's Knees that has since been deleted stated that the store had indeed closed, but general manager Elliot Kim says that the tweet came from a person who is "no longer affiliated" with the place.

The original Bee's Knees in Boston's Fort Point area appears to be under different ownership from the Allston shop and its future remains unknown, as it may be on the selling block (it apparently went up for sale last fall).

The address for this market in Allston is: Bee's Knees Supply Company, 1316 Commonwealth Avenue, Allston, MA, 02134.

[July 27 update: The reopening of Bee's Knees in Allston appears to be in question again, as a new Twitter post from @ludalainc indicates the space is for sale.]

Bee's Knees Supply Company in Boston's Fort Point Is Apparently Up for Sale

It looks like a gourmet market in one of Boston's hottest neighborhoods is on the selling block.

According to a post on the Craigslist site. a "High-End Market &amp Cafe" is up for sale, with the photos included in the post showing the interior of Bee's Knees Supply Company on Farnsworth Street in the city's Fort Point area. The listing says that the retail beer and wine license would be included in the price, and the reason given for the store being sold is because of a "partnership dispute."

Bee's Knees first opened in Fort Point in March of 2013, with the shop including an extensive grocery area as well as a deli and cafe. A second shop opened on Commonwealth Avenue in Allston this summer, and a source tells us that that location will remain in operation.

The address for Bee's Knees Supply Company in Fort Point is 12 Farnsworth Street, Boston, MA, 02210. Its website can be found at http://www.beeskneessupply.com/

Cardullo's in Cambridge's Harvard Square Is Being Sold

An iconic grocery store in the heart of Cambridge's Harvard Square will soon be under new ownership.

Cambridge Day is reporting that Cardullo's on Brattle Street is being sold to Kim and Richard Wilson, who are "fleeing big business" (Kim has recently worked at Staples while Richard has worked at BJ's Wholesale Club). The article says that the changeover will mark the first time in its 65-year history that there won't be anyone from the Cardullo family fully involved with the store, though current co-owner Donez Cardullo-Tavilla does say that she will help out during the holidays. Both the Wilsons and the Cardullos will work together to make the transition a smooth one, with the sale of the shop slated to become official sometime in August.

[July 14 update: According to an article in the Cambridge Chronicle and TAB, the sale of Cardullo's should be finalized in the next four to six weeks (as soon as the liquor license transfer takes place), with the name and concept of the place remaining the same.]
