Momma's in North Cambridge Expands, Opening a New Location at The Charles River Speedway in Brighton

A local food shop that is known in part for its maple creemees has expanded to a second location.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Momma's  in North Cambridge has been joined by a new location at the Charles River Speedway on Western Avenue in Brighton, with an Instagram post from the business saying the following:

We've been working quietly on something special + something small, but a big deal in our little world. We opened our door at the Charles River Speedway [Wednesday] for the first time. We served cones to so many sweeties + saw a lot of familiar faces + talked to so many nice new to us people!....Momma’s here at the Speedway has a BIG soft-serve machine to hopefully pump out the cones! We have lots of non-alc bevvies for sitting on the patio + snacks too, like cheese, maple kettle korn, crackers, shortbreads + heirloom tomatoes (for the summer). We even have paring knives + we hope you’ll make a picnic!

Far Out Ice Cream to Open in Brighton's Cleveland Circle Area

A small group of New Zealand-style ice cream shops is expanding to another space, and this one should be popular with college students.

According to an article from boston.com, Far Out Ice Cream is planning to open in the Cleveland Circle section of Brighton near Boston College, with an Instagram post from the business indicating that it will be taking over the former Energize location on Beacon Street. Once it opens, the new shop will join others at Time Out Market in Boston's Fenway neighborhood, Brookline between Coolidge Corner and the Allston border, and Cambridgeside in East Cambridge, and like those locations, it will offer ice cream blended with real frozen fruit.

Far Out Ice Cream, which was established in 2019, once had a pop-up across from Nantasket Beach in Hull before expanding to brick-and-mortar locations.

Third Time Together Is Opening a Brick-and Mortar Shop at the Charles River Speedway in Brighton

A few months ago, it was announced that a local ice cream business known for its pop-ups could be opening a permanent space in Somerville, and now we have learned that it will be coming to Brighton instead.

According to a Bluesky post from @troysch1.bsky.social, Third Time Together (formerly Third Time Ice Cream) is now planning to open at the Charles River Speedway on Western Avenue, moving into the former Super Bien space. Back in April, the business put up an Instagram post saying that they were "headed for a permanent home in East Somerville," but that subsequently fell through.

Third Time founder Nick Ladin-Sienne, who comes from such restaurants as Oleana, Sofra, and Puritan + Co., brought a temporary location of the place to Somerville's Bow Market last fall.

Sweet Spoon Opens in the Former Scoop N Scootery Space in Brighton

A new ice cream place has come to a Boston neighborhood, moving into the space where a location of another ice cream shop had been.

According to a source, Sweet Spoon is now open in Brighton, taking over the former Scoop N Scootery space on Washington Street in Brighton Center. An Instagram post from @natinbos indicates that the new store offers a variety of ice cream flavors along with frozen yogurt, non-dairy ice cream, milkshakes, croissants, waffle bubbles, and more.

The Brighton location of The Scoop and Scootery closed toward the end of 2024, with locations in Allston, East Arlington and at Cambridge Crossing in East Cambridge remaining in operation.

The Scoop N Scootery in Brighton Has Closed

A local ice cream delivery company that also runs a few brick-and-mortar shops has shut down one of its stores.

According to a source, The Scoop N Scootery in Brighton is no longer in business with a Facebook post from the Brighton Main Streets Facebook group page saying the following:

Sad to report that Scoop and Scootery Brighton Center Location has closed. We spoke to management and they will still be scooping down in Allston at their 75 Linden Street location! They said a new business will be taking over their lease who serves ice cream and other treats! So stay tuned!

In addition to its Allston shop, The Scoop N Scootery--which originally started out as a Somerville-based mobile ice cream delivery and catering business--can also be found in East Arlington and at Cambridge Crossing in East Cambridge.

Athan's Bakery & Cafe in Brighton Is Closing, Looking for New Space

A location of a pair of bakery-cafes is getting ready to shut down, though it could possibly be returning in a new space.

According to a Facebook post from Brighton Main Streets, Athan's Bakery & Cafe on Washington Street is closing its doors, with a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page indicating that its last day may be Thursday, December 28. The Brighton Main Streets post states that this might not be the end for the shop, saying that "The owners are still actively looking for a smaller space and hope for it to be in our Community." (Both posts mention that the Brookline location will remain in operation.) The Brighton outlet of Athan's Bakery & Cafe first opened approximately 15 years ago, offering baked goods and pastries with European influences.

Based on an earlier article here, it appears that a new location of Lakon Paris Patisserie will be opening within the Athan's space.

Lakon Paris Patisserie Is Opening in Brighton

It looks like a pair of bakeries just west of Boston will be joined by its first within the city itself.

According to a source (Gary Goldblatt), Lakon Paris Patisserie is planning to open in Brighton, joining existing locations in Newton Highlands and Brookline's Coolidge Corner. Based on those two shops, expect the new outlet to offer a variety of croissants along with other baked goods and pastries, and its Instagram page hints that this one may have a decent amount of indoor seating unlike the two other shops which focus on takeout.

Solodko Boston Opens in Brighton

A Ukrainian bakery and pastry shop has come to Boston, moving into a space that had been home to a pizzeria.

Universal Hub confirms what a source told us last week, that Solodko Boston is now open in Brighton, taking over the former Boston Crust space on Brooks Street just south of the Mass. Pike underpass, Nonantum Road, and the Charles River. The UH article mentions that the new shop is run by two sisters--Ilona and Irina Znakharchuk--while the Instagram page for the business indicates that its offerings include such items as macarons, croissants, cakes, and more.

Notch Brewing Opens in the Charles River Speedway in Brighton

A couple of year ago, it was reported that the people behind a brewery on the North Shore would be opening a second location within a new marketplace in Boston. Now we have learned that the new facility debuts today.

According to a source (via a Facebook post from the place), Notch Brewing in Salem opens its new brewery, taproom, and beer garden in the Charles River Speedway in Brighton at 4:00 PM today, with the post saying that food trucks will be set up as well at the site, including Daddy's Bonetown Burgers today and Zaaki Restaurant and Food Truck tomorrow. (The official grand opening for the Notch is expected to take place this fall.)

In addition to Notch, the Charles River Speedway will also become home to other businesses including a wine bar and food shop called Super Bien and a sake bar called The Koji Club.

Roadrunner Is Opening at Boston Landing in Brighton

The owner and operator of a number of music venues in the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic region--including two in the local area--is bringing a new venue to Boston, with this one coming to a growing development next to the Mass. Pike.

According to a press release, The Bowery Presents is planning to open Roadrunner at Boston Landing in Brighton, with the 50,000-square-foot spot having a capacity of 3,500 and being the largest general admission indoor music venue in New England once it opens. If all goes as planned, Roadrunner will open in the spring of 2022.

The Bowery Presents is also behind Royale in Boston and The Sinclair in Cambridge.

The Scoop N Scootery Is Opening in the Former Abbott's Frozen Custard Space in Brighton

It looks like an ice cream delivery company with two shops in the Boston area is opening a third, with this one taking over the space where a location of a small chain of frozen custard shops had been until closing last June.

According to a source, The Scoop N Scootery is moving into the former Abbott's Frozen Custard space in Brighton Center, with a photo showing a sign up for the upcoming shop. A check on Yelp seems to confirm this, showing that a page is now up for the Washington Street location of The Scoop N Scootery, though the website for the business only shows its existing locations in East Arlington and Allston.

The Scoop N Scootery, which started out as a Somerville-based mobile ice cream delivery and catering business, opened its first shop on Mass. Ave. in East Arlington in 2016, with its second outlet on Linden Street in Allston opening earlier this year.

Locations of Abbott's Frozen Custard (which is based in Rochester, NY) remain open in Arlington, Lexington, and Needham, with another on the way to Arlington Heights as well.

Update: PURR Cat Cafe in Brighton Has Closed

[Ed note: This article was updated on October 9 to reflect the fact that the cafe appears to have closed for good.]

It looks like Boston's first (and only) cat cafe has closed for at least the time being.

Universal Hub is reporting (via a Twitter post from @MariannaFoos) that PURR Cat Cafe in Brighton has temporarily shuttered, with a note on its website saying "Please continue to check back with us for future updates. Thank you to each and every one of you that has supported PURR since opening. Thank you for your past business and support. We are very thankful and grateful in having you as our customer." The Chestnut Hill Avenue cafe, which debuted in 2017 after a long and rocky road to opening, was a place where people could hang out with adoptable shelter cats while bringing in food or beverages.

bfresh in Brighton Is Closing

A trio of local grocery stores that focus on healthy options will soon be down to just two.

Universal Hub is reporting (via a tweet from @GospelOfIHM) that bfresh in Brighton is closing its doors. while WCVB 5 states that the Washington Street store plans to shut down on November 25. WCVB mentions that Stop & Shop is looking to integrate the bfresh markets into their brand, and that a planned Newton outlet will become a new small format store--though it appears that no name has been given for that shop as of yet. (Both Stop & Shop and bfresh are part of the Ahold Delhaize food retailer, which is based in the Netherlands.) The bfresh stores in Allston and Somerville will remain in operation.

bfresh first opened in Brighton in August of 2016.

PURR Cat Cafe in Brighton Has Opened

After a long and at-times wild ride, Boston's very first cat cafe has become reality.

According to a Facebook post from the place, PURR Cat Cafe in Brighton is now open, with the note saying that the Inspectional Services Department has confirmed that the place has the proper licensing to open and that it has four cats onsite at this point in time. A reservations page for PURR shows that the price of admission is $15 for one hour, though it is not known exactly what is included for the fee.

More information will likely be coming, but for now, Boston is officially home to a cafe cafe.

UPDATE: PURR Cat Cafe in Brighton Plans to Open November 18 After Canceling Scheduled Soft Opening

After a number of stops and starts, it looked liked Boston would finally get its first cat cafe today, but it was apparently not meant to be.

According to a Facebook post earlier this morning from the place, PURR Cat Cafe had been planning to soft-open in Brighton today, with the Chestnut Hill Avenue spot charging $10 for admission (cash only) for one hour. A more recent Facebook post indicates that this will not be happening, with owner Diane Kelly saying the following:

Due to the amount of concern regarding the cafe I have taken the advice of my consultant to not open today. We will be [focusing] on addressing issues regarding Purr Cat Cafe later this week, answering every question and concern the community has. We will resume business once we have addressed these issues and fixed them appropriately.

It has been a long and (at times) controversial ride for the cafe which was first announced back in the spring of 2016, including a rejection of a permit application, a loss of an adoption partner, public arguments with people on Facebook (including former workers), and opening dates that were pushed back--and its Facebook page has been taken down and put back up at least a few times this year.

[November 10 update: PURR Cat Cafe has still not opened and now a recent Facebook post shows that the person managing its social media has publicly resigned, saying in the post that "Due to the creative differences I have decided to part ways with the cafe."]

[November 13 update: According to a source (Lynda Damato McConville), Purr Cat Cafe is now planning to open for real on Saturday, November 18, with a Facebook post from the place confirming this. A reservations page shows that the price of admission is now $15 for one hour (as opposed to the $10 for the soft opening which never happened), and it is not known what exactly is included for the $15, so stay tuned as more information comes in.]

[November 16 update: Despite Facebook posts from the place claiming it will open this Saturday, it now appears that the opening is in doubt, as Jason Law of Boston 25 News reports that according to state and city officials, owner Diane Kelly does not have a state license to operate PURR Cat Cafe, she is not meeting with city inspectors or even letting them into the space, and she has also gotten a "cease and desist" order from the  Department of Agriculture because she mentioned on Facebook that she imported cats from Italy and Russia.]

Martignetti Liquors in Brighton Is Closing

A name in the retail liquor business that has been around for more than 80 years is going away, as it shifts its focus over to wholesale.

According to a Facebook post from food/drinks writer MC Slim JB, Martignetti Liquors in Brighton is shutting down, with a tweet from @ANBunnell indicating that its last day in operation will be Saturday, March 18. The picture within the tweet shows that the closing of the Soldiers Field Road liquor store represents the completion of a transition from retail to wholesale, with Martignetti now focusing on being a wholesale distribution company that covers the New England region.

Martignetti Liquors got its start in Boston's North End in 1933, with the Brighton store opening in 1963. Other retail locations of Martignetti have closed over the years, including ones in the North End and Chelsea. (Martignetti's wholesale business is headquartered in Taunton.)

Wildflower Pantry Opens in Former Castlebar Space in Brighton

A food shop that focuses on local items has opened in Brighton, taking over the space where a dive bar had once been.

The Tables section of The Boston Globe mentions that Wildflower Pantry is now open in Oak Square in the former Castlebar space, with the website for the Washington Street store saying that it is a "local-focused grocery" that sells breads, cheeses, honey, bagels, meat, seafood, coffee, soda, and much more. The Globe says that the shop is "aimed at providing those who live farther from the Boston Public Market" and other similar places an option for locally-sourced items all year long.

The Castlebar, which closed its doors in the summer of 2014, was mostly a neighborhood hangout that had a full bar (no food), darts, a jukebox, and TVs.

bfresh to Open in Brighton

A local grocery store that focuses on healthy options is looking to expand, and it will be one of two new outlets coming to the Boston area.

A Twitter post from @alli_rico indicates that bfresh is opening in Brighton, with an earlier tweet from the company confirming this, saying that it will open on Washington Street between Brighton Center and Oak Square. The new shop will join an existing one on Harvard Avenue in Allston along with an upcoming store on Elm Street in Somerville, with the latter hoping to open later this year. (Another location of bfresh in Fairfield, CT, is no longer in operation.)

The company that runs bfresh is the Fresh Formats division of Dutch retailer Ahold, which operates  the Stop & Shop supermarket chain.

Mary Ann's in Brighton's Cleveland Circle May Have Hours Reduced

A dive bar that is popular with college students might be having its hours cut after a string of incidents and violations.

Universal Hub is reporting that Mary Ann's in the Cleveland Circle section of Brighton will be meeting with the Boston Licensing Board at the nearby Metropolitan Waterworks Museum next Monday, with the hearing focusing on the possibility of reducing the bar's hours from its current closing time of 2:00 AM. This comes on the heels of a recent eight-day suspension that stems from underage drinking at the bar, along with several other suspensions over the past year and a half from the use of fake ids and minors being in possession of alcohol.

The attorney for Mary Ann's tells the board that the place would immediately stop accepting out-of-state licenses, instead requiring a Massachusetts ID, military ID, or passport, according to UH.

Mary Ann's is known mainly as a hangout for BC students--and most of the incidents have involved students from that college.

Update: Brighton Gourmet and Cellar Is Opening in Brighton's Oak Square Neighborhood

[Ed note: This article was updated on July 25, 2013 to reflect a name given for the place--and the fact that it is now open.]

A store that features specialty foods along with beer, wine, and liquor is going to be opening in Brighton.

The Boston Globe reports that the new shop--which does not seem to have a name yet--will open on Washington Street in the Oak Square section of this Boston neighborhood, taking over the space where Diskovery (a used music, book, and movie store) has been. Items such as cheese, pasta, cooking oils, sauces, and jams will be available at the upcoming place, and the shop may eventually have food and drink tastings as well, along with cooking classes.

Expect the store to be open by early September, according to the Globe.
