Sweet Bakery in Chestnut Hill and Downtown Boston Are Closed; Exact Status of Latter Unknown

A group of bakeries and pastry shops that closed one of its locations earlier this year has closed its other two locations, and it remains a mystery as to whether one of the two might open back up again.

According to several sources, Sweet Bakery in Chestnut Hill and downtown Boston are both closed, with one source on the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook page indicating that Chill Sugar Co. is replacing the Chestnut Hill location while a few sources say that a "space available" sign is apparently posted out front at the Boston location. Earlier reports from sources indicated that the Boston shop was only closed for renovations and a Yelp page mentions that it is "temporarily closed" and is scheduled to reopen on May 31. The website for all locations gives no indication that the Chestnut Hill or Boston outlets have closed, and it also shows that the shop in Cambridge's Harvard Square that shuttered earlier this year is considered to be "closed for renovation." We have reached out to Sweet Bakery to find out more information on all of this, so keep checking back for updates.(The online business for Sweet Bakery remains in operation, as does its catering.)

The aforementioned Chill Sugar Co. is slated to open in the former Sweet Bakery space in Chestnut Hill this weekend, according to its Instagram page.

The website for Sweet Bakery can be found at https://sweetcupcakes.com/

[May 17 update: Eater Boston states that the downtown Boston location of Sweet Bakery hopes to open back up at some point in the future, though no timeline has been given as of yet.]

Magnolia Bakery Still Looking to Expand to Boston

A group of bakeries based in New York City that gained notoriety thanks to a TV series--and which also helped bring about the cupcake craze of the 1990s and 2000s--has reiterated its plans to come to Boston.

The Boston Business Journal is reporting that Magnolia Bakery is once again saying it hopes to expand to Boston, along with Greenwich, CT, and Washington D.C., with new locations expected by the latter part of 2017 or 2018, though it is not known if the Boston shops will be opening then. (The BBJ says that no leases have been signed as of yet.) Back in 2010, we mentioned that the bakery was eyeing Boston, and while the bakery--which started out in Greenwich Village in the 1990s--now has additional shops in New York as well as Long Island, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Honolulu, no stores ever did open up in the Boston area.

Magnolia became famous thanks in part to its being featured on "Sex and the City," and it has also been mentioned on a number of other TV shows and movies over the years.

Crumbs Bake Shop Reopening in Boston's Financial District

A chain of cupcake shops that closed down over the summer is getting back on its feet again--and at least one of its stores in Massachusetts is getting ready to open back up.

The Boston Business Journal is reporting that the Crumbs Bake Shop location on Federal Street in Boston's Financial District is reopening tomorrow (Friday, October 31) and as stated previously, it will be offering more than just cupcakes this time around. Based on its website, it does not appear that the Crumbs locations at the Prudential Center in the Back Bay, and the Natick Mall in Natick are slated to reopen, at least at this point in time.

Kickass Cupcakes in Somerville Is Closed, Cleared Out

A well-known cupcake bakery in Somerville is locked up and cleared out, with the future of the business unknown at this point in time.

According to multiple sources, Kickass Cupcakes on Highland Avenue is shuttered, with photos sent from one source indicating that there is a "Closed" sign on the door and that the inside has boxes, bags, and containers on the floor. A phone call placed to the cupcake shop indicates that the voicemail box is full, and its Facebook page could not be found this afternoon. It is not yet known exactly what is going on with the business; as soon as we find out more, we will post an update here.

[January 23, 2015 update: The Boston Business Journal is reporting that Kickass Cupcakes has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, with the business having a total debt of more than $260,000; a creditors meeting will apparently take place on February 26.]

Kickass Cupcakes had moved its retail shop from 378 Highland Avenue to 199C Highland Avenue (where its bakery space was) earlier this year, bringing the shop and the bakery operations back together after branching the operations off in the summer of 2012. Crumbs Bake Shop Getting Financing from Group of Investors, Will Reopen Stores

Last week we reported that a chain of cupcake shops closed all of its locations, though a couple of days later it looked like a group of investors may try to bring the chain back to life. Now we have learned that this has indeed taken place.

According to a post on the Business Wire site, Marcus Lemonis LLC and Fischer Enterprises, L.L.C. have joined together to form a new venture called Lemonis Fischer Acquisition Company, LLC, signing an agreement to provide funding to (and take over) the Crumbs Bake Shop chain. The post says that the new privately-held company will continue to be called Crumbs and that the stores will reopen, though it does not say if all of the stores will reopen (as soon as we find out, we will post an update here). As mentioned in the earlier article here, it looks like the new Crumbs shops will offer more than just cupcakes in order to "broaden its appeal to a larger customer base," according to Fischer Enterprises C.O.O. Scott Fischer.

[August 22 update: Eater National is reporting that Marcus Lemonis has won his bid for Crumbs, with the New York Post stating that the chain is slated to come out of bankruptcy on August 26. (And as stated earlier, the new shops will offer other items in addition to cupcakes.) Thanks to @FoodserviceEast for bringing this to our attention.]

[October 15 update: International Business Times mentions that 26 location of Crumbs (including in Boston) will be opening in the next 30 days, though it does not specify whether all three Boston-area stores will reopen.]

The New York-based Crumbs chain once had as many as six shops in the Boston area, though only three remained when the chain shut down last week--one on Federal Street in Boston's Financial District, another at the Prudential Center in the Back Bay, and a third at the Natick Mall in Natick.
