Widowmaker Brewing Co. Is Opening a Beer Garden in Quincy's Wollaston Neighborhood

A local brewer is going to be moving its seasonal beer garden to a new location, and it will sit where an historic theatre that dated back to the 1920s had once been.

Based on information from a Facebook post from the business along with a post from the Quincy Is Everything Facebook page, Widowmaker Brewing Co. is apparently opening a beer garden in the Wollaston section of Quincy, with this being a move from Kilroy Square in the downtown area. The brewery says the following in its post:

We have seen and appreciated the countless messages from people bummed by the idea of us not returning to Quincy for Year 8 of our Beer Garden.  This week the shovels went into the ground, we are moving but we are not leaving. Follow @wollastongardens

QIE mentions that the beer garden will be at the former Wollaston Theatre site on Beale Street and that it plans to debut on May 15, being open Thursday through Saturday.

Niveaux Pâtisserie Is Opening in North Quincy

A French patisserie is coming to Quincy, and it looks like it has a connection to a local restaurant group.

According to an Instagram post from Ming Cao, who is a partner at JP Fuji Group, Niveaux Pâtisserie is planning to open in North Quincy, with the post saying the following

Introducing Niveaux Pâtisserie, @niveaux.patisserie your soon-to-be favorite spot for artisanal French pastries, set to grace Quincy in the summer of 2024. With a touch of Parisian elegance and a dash of local charm, we're crafting a unique experience for all who cherish the art of fine baking. Stay tuned for a taste of our passion, baked into every bite.

Based on the address given, it looks like Niveaux Pâtisserie is replacing YoCha on Hancock Street; YoCha was one of a number of spots from JP Fuji Group, which is also behind various Fuji locations along with B Cafe and Shabu Restaurant.

Neighborhood Variety Opens in Quincy

A new food shop is has come to Quincy, and it features Irish products.

According to posts within the Everything Braintree Facebook group page and a check on the place, Neighborhood Variety is now open in the Quincy Point section of the city, moving into a space on E Howard Street across from the old shipyard. The post indicates that the store sells such items as soda bread, rashers, Tayto crisps, Kerrygold butter, baked beans, McDonnells curry sauce, and KP Hula Hoops, along with beer and wine.

Babycakes in Quincy Is Closing

A bakery in Quincy that features cupcakes is shutting down.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Babycakes on Beale Street (just outside of Wollaston) is closing its doors, with a Facebook post from the place saying the following:

To our loyal customers, friends, and neighbors, It is with deep sadness that it has come time to close Babycakes' doors....I'd like to thank everybody for their unconditional support over the last 5 years, especially through the pandemic. It's been such an honor to have been part of your special life moments. Babycakes will be closing it’s doors on September 2nd, at 3 pm. As always, thank you for your support and business over the years. Mahriah & the Babycakes family

The post refers customers to The Merry Cafe, which first opened on Broad Street in Weymouth last year and which is under the same ownership.

Tous Les Jours Is Opening in North Quincy

A group of French-Asian bakeries and cafes based in South Korea is getting ready to open yet another Boston-area location.

A poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page says (via a Patriot Ledger article) that Tous Les Jours is slated to open in North Quincy this month, moving into a space on Billings Road just off Hancock Street. Once it opens, it will join others locally in Allston, Burlington, Malden, Natick, and Newton, and based on those locations, expect to see a variety of baked goods, pastries, and other items such as sandwiches, smoothies, coffee, and tea.

Miam Miam Macaronerie Is Opening in Quincy Center

A local business known for its macarons is opening a retail shop in one of the hottest parts of the Greater Boston area.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Miam Miam Macaronerie is planning to open in Quincy Center, with a note within the Quincy, Ma Happenings and Events Facebook group page (from City of Quincy consultant and publicist Kerry J. Byrne) saying that the store will be opening in front of the Quincy Center T station. The business currently sells macarons online and has also been set up previously in a couple of different storefronts--within The Juice Box on West Broadway in South Boston and inside the Sure Pinoy market on Water Street in Quincy--but this will be their first retail store that they will be able to call their own.

Purefections Chocolate in Quincy Is Moving to a New Location

A gourmet chocolate shop is getting ready to move to a new space.

According to a Facebook post from the place, Purefections Chocolate is moving from Franklin Street in South Quincy to Hancock Street in Quincy Center, with the note saying that the Franklin Street location will shut down as of February 24. If all goes as planned, the shop will reopen in its new space by the first week of March, though no specific date has been given as of yet.

Purefections offers a variety of items using Belgian chocolate, with a few options including almond clusters, caramel cups, dipped sandwich cookies, sea salt discs, and tartarugas.

Broker Who Allegedly Bilked Beachcomber Investors Arrested in Florida

The person who reportedly swindled money from investors of a now-closed music club in Quincy has been caught.

CBS Boston is reporting that Scott Wolas was arrested today in Delray Beach, FL, on charges of wire fraud and aggravated identity theft more than six months after he dropped out of sight, with police saying he absconded with more than $1.5 million from 19 investors who were hoping to develop the former Beachcomber property at Wollaston Beach. An earlier report here had mentioned that Wolas had worked out of a real estate office in Quincy under the name Eugene Grathwohl, while CBS states that he went by at least six different aliases. Wolas is expected to be returned to Massachusetts at some point, according to the article.

The Beachcomber first opened in 1959 and had featured countless local and national acts over the years before closing down in the fall of 2015. The initial plan was to tear down the building and replace it with a high-end restaurant, but no progress was made and the city of Quincy looked into the situation last August shortly before Wolas disappeared.

C-Mart Given the Green Light to Open in North Quincy

An Asian market has gotten approval to open another store in the Boston area, though this one took a very long time to get the green light.

The Patriot Ledger is reporting that the Quincy city council is allowing a special permit for C-Mart to open in the former Boston Gear Works space on Hayward Street in the North Quincy neighborhood with a 98-space parking lot being part of the plans. The article says that a traffic mitigation plan was also part of the package, with C-Mart funding the installation of new traffic and pedestrian lights, a left-turn-only lane at the Hancock Street/Hayward Street intersection, and other changes.

Plans for C-Mart to open in North Quincy were first brought up approximately eight years ago, but the proposal was rejected twice by the city, in part because the market would be opening next to a Hannaford's supermarket and it would be located near a business district that is already busy with traffic.

Other locations of C-Mart can be found on Herald Street in Boston's South End and on Lincoln Street on the eastern edge of Chinatown; a third market on Washington Street in Chinatown closed in 2013.
