Bakey Is Opening at Faneuil Hall Marketplace in Boston

A small group of bakeries with a well-known Israeli baker behind them is about to be joined by a fifth location, and this one will be in the heart of Boston.

According to a press release, Bakey is slated to open at Faneuil Hall Marketplace on Friday, August 15, offering items such as babka, burekas, and challah, and this one will be the only outlet to offer the Boston Cream Babka year round. Once it opens at 4 S Market Street (by the front entrance of Quincy Market's West End), the new location will join others by Boston Common, Cambridge's Kendall Square, Brookline, and Newton.

Uri Scheft, who is co-founder of Bakey, is also behind Lehamim Bakery in Israel, and he co-founded Breads Bakery in New York City.

Sam Adams Taproom by Faneuil Hall Is Reopening (with Some Changes Made)

A taproom in downtown Boston that reopened briefly this summer only to shut down again is opening back up, though things will be a bit different this time.

According to a Facebook post from the place, the Sam Adams Boston Tap Room adjacent to Faneuil Hall is planning to reopen on Wednesday, September 22, with the post indicating that they will offer a mix of limited patio reservations and first-come, first serve walk-in tables, while reservations are available for parties of three to six people and diners have a limit of 1 hour and 45 minutes for their visits. (The taproom will be open Wednesday through Sunday.) Back in mid-July, the taproom closed at least in part because of the influx of out-of-state visitors from COVID-19 hotspots, and it had previous been closed from March until late June due to the pandemic. (It first opened its doors in January of this year.)

Sam Adams Taproom Next to Faneuil Hall Temporarily Closes Due to Visitors from Coronavirus Hotspots

A taproom in a section of Boston that is popular with visitors from out of state has shut down for the time being because of visitors coming from out of state--and specifically where the COVID-19 pandemic is spiking.

Universal Hub is reporting (via a Facebook post from the place) that the Sam Adams Boston Tap Room next to Faneuil Hall is now closed for the foreseeable future, with the post saying the following:

Thank you to everyone who has come by to enjoy a beer on our outdoor roof deck patio these past three weeks. Upon further reflection, we have made a tough decision. Due to the influx of out-of-state visitors from COVID-19 hotspots to our taproom, we are closing our rooftop patio out of an abundance of caution for our guests and coworkers. While we love welcoming visitors to the taproom, we also know we need to do our part to keep everyone as safe as possible.

The taproom, which first opened in January only to temporarily close in March as the pandemic took hold, will remain open for contactless to-go orders Wednesday through Sunday from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM. (Masks and IDs are required for any pickups made.)

According to a licensing board hearing page within the city's website, Ben and Jerry's is looking to open at Faneuil Hall Marketplace, with the notice saying that the store would have 816 square feet of space on the first floor of the North Market building. If approved, the new shop would join a handful of others in and around Boston, including in the Back Bay (two), the Seaport District, Cambridge's Harvard Square, Braintree, and Natick, along with a kiosk by the New England Aquarium.

The address for the new Faneuil Hall location of Ben and Jerry's is 8 N Market Street (Suite 2182), Boston, MA, 02109. The website for the ice cream company can be found at http://www.benjerry.com/

Sam Adams to Open Taproom by Boston's Faneuil Hall

by Marc Hurwitz

It looks like a big name in the beer industry is going to be bringing a taproom to the heart of Boston.

Eater Boston confirms what a source told us earlier this week, that the Boston Beer Company (which is known for its Sam Adams beers) is planning to open a taproom at 60 State Street by Faneuil Hall, with our source saying that it would be opening in the former Hillstone/Houlihan's space. The post indicates that plans are in their early stages, as negotiations still need to be finalized and the permitting process then proceeding along with construction; if all goes well, the taproom could be opening sometime during the second half of 2019.

Currently, the Boston Beer Company has a brewery and taproom on 30 Germania Street in Jamaica Plain.

The website for Boston Beer Company (and the Sam Adams brand) can be found at https://www.bostonbeer.com/

Magnolia Bakery Is Opening at Boston's Faneuil Hall

Over the past several years, there has been chatter that a New York-based group of bakeries that gained notoriety thanks to a TV series--and which also helped bring about the cupcake craze of the 1990s and 2000s--was looking to expand to Boston. Now we have learned that this will indeed become reality later this year.

The Tables section of The Boston Globe is reporting that Magnolia Bakery is opening a stall at 2-4 Faneuil Hall, with the plan being to open sometime in the fall based on what a rep told the Globe. The website for Magnolia Bakery can be found at http://www.magnoliabakery.com/

[August 10 update: The Boston Herald mentions that the upcoming Magnolia Bakery may have a heated patio area, as it is part of a proposal to upgrade Faneuil Hall with new seamless glass canopies with some of the canopies being movable and having heaters overhead, including that of the bakery.]

[September 15 update: Eater Boston states that Magnolia Bakery plans to open in Faneuil Hall in December, and it will sell cupcakes, banana pudding, cookies, muffins, scones, and more. (EB also says that this will be a corporate location, not a franchise.)]

[March 20, 2018 update: According to a press release, Magnolia Bakery plans to open at the end of the month and one of the items it will feature is a Boston Cream Pie Banana Pudding.]

[March 26, 2018 update: Boston Magazine says in an update that Magnolia Bakery opens in Faneuil Hall on Thursday, March 29, with hours being 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM Monday through Saturday and 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM on Sundays.]

Frost Ice Bar in Boston Rebranding, Becoming Frost Ice Loft

The first "ice bar" in New England is no longer just an ice bar, as it is now in the midst of a rebranding.

Based on a Twitter conversation between @CappyinBoston and the place, Frost Ice Bar at Boston's Faneuil Hall is now called Frost Ice Loft, with the change in name coming about because it is "Time to lose the stigma of just being a 'bar' & building a new warm event space, so loft is more fitting!" Changes include the fact that there is now no time limit for customers (previously, patrons could stay in the bar for no longer than 45 minutes) and the cover charge is now $12 (including parka and gloves), as opposed to $19 when it first opened. According to its website, "Family Friendly Hours" are 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM while it is 21+ from 5:00 PM to closing time, and no reservations are needed.

Frost, which first opened in August of 2013, is constructed and furnished entirely of ice.

[July 10 update: According to a press release, Frost Ice Loft has officially debuted, with a new drink menu and extensive upgrades to the bar area taking place. In addition, it also has a new (room temperature) space called The Galley, which will focus on private events--including corporate, arts-based, children's, and non-profit events.]

The address for Frost Ice Loft is 200 State Street (Faneuil Hall Marketplace), Boston, MA, 02109. Its website can be found at http://frosticebar.com/

Wicked Good Cupcakes (Which Features Cupcakes in Mason Jars) Comes to Boston's Faneuil Hall

A South Shore-based bakery that sells cupcakes in mason jars is now offering its treats in downtown Boston.

The Boston Business Journal is reporting that Wicked Good Cupcakes has opened a second location, with this one being in Faneuil Hall (their original location can be found on Route 3A in Cohasset). According to the BBJ, the concept of cupcakes in mason jars was developed by the company as a way to ship them, but the treats are now sold that way in their shops as well. A note from MKPR indicates that the Wicked Good Cupcakes kiosk at Faneuil Hall includes a bank of laptops that allows customers to order jars and have them shipped anywhere in the United States.

Quincy Market Bankruptcy Threat

General Growth Properties Inc., a REIT based out of Chicago that owns the Faneuil Hall Marketplace (including Quincy Market) in Boston, is in danger of going bankrupt, according to reports that have come out today. WBZ 1030 and other news outlets mentioned this morning that General Growth, which is one of the largest owners of malls in the United States, may have to file for bankruptcy in December unless they are able to extend their debt or refinance.

It is one of several sections of the Faneuil Hall Marketplace, which also includes North Market, South Market and the historic Faneuil Hall itself.
