Ebisuya Japanese Market in Medford Is Closing

A Japanese grocery store just north of Boston that is known in part for its ramen and sushi is shutting down.

According to multiple sources, Ebisuya Japanese Market is getting ready to close, with a Facebook post from the Riverside Avenue spot saying the following:

Dear Precious Customers, We want to update you on critical matters at Ebisuya... We planned to stay open for the next years to come, but sadly, we have been told that the building in which Ebisuya is housed will be demolished this summer. This means that Ebisuya will be closing by the end of May 2025.

The post does mention that Ebisuya Japanese Noodle House in Malden will remain open and that Kevin's Bread (which is made in-house daily) will continue to be available online, while also noting that customers need to use their rewards card points because they will "expire with the store."

The address for Ebisuya Japanese Market is 65 Riverside Avenue, Medford, MA, 02155. Its website is at https://www.ebisuyamarket.com/

Goldilox Bagels Is Opening in Medford

by Marc Hurwitz

It looks like another option for bagels is on its way to the Boston area, with this one opening just north of the city.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Goldilox Bagels is planning to open in Medford, with the description on its website saying that it will be a "gourmet bagel shop serving Medford and its neighboring communities," offering "homemade bagels, spreads, sandwiches, and drinks – freshly prepared and available daily." Another Facebook post from a person who is apparently behind the business mentions that a lease has been signed for it, though little other information appears to be available, including where it will be located and when it might open. (As soon as we get more info, we will post an update here.)

The website for Goldilox can be found at http://www.goldiloxbagels.com

Wegmans Opens in Medford

by Marc Hurwitz

A chain of supermarkets that has been slowly expanding through the Greater Boston area over the past several years has opened its latest location in a space where a shopping mall had been.

As reported earlier, Wegmans opens today in Medford at the site of the old Meadow Glen Mall, nearly two years after the location was first announced. The new grocery store joins other locations in Burlington, Chestnut Hill, Northborough, and Westwood, with an upcoming store planned for the Natick Mall as well. (A proposed Fenway location is on hold for now.) An earlier Boston Magazine article mentioned that the Medford location of Wegmans has a total area of 120,000 square feet and includes a market cafe area with various dining options.

Wegmans, which first got its start in Rochester, NY, opened its first Massachusetts location in Northborough in the fall of 2011.

The address for the new Wegmans in Medford is 3850 Mystic Valley Parkway, Medford, MA, 02155. The website for the chain can be found at https://www.wegmans.com/

Wegmans Is Coming to Medford

A chain of supermarkets that until a few years ago had no presence in the local area is apparently going to be opening yet another new location, and this one would be just north of Boston.

According to a Facebook post from InsideMedford.com, Mayor Michael McGlynn mentioned in his final "State of the City" address today that Wegmans would be opening at the Meadow Glen Mall on the Mystic Valley Pkwy just east of Route 93. No timeframe has been given as of yet, and we are awaiting a response to a message sent to the Rochester, NY-based chain this evening; as soon as we find out more, we will post an update here.

[November 30 update: A post within the city of Medford website confirms that Wegmans is indeed coming, as a quote from Mayor McGlynn includes the following: "The Meadow Glen Mall has been permitted for the renovation of 60,000 square feet. Marshalls and Kohls will continue their leases, and they are welcoming new tenants, including Wegmans."]

[December 1 update: According to an article in the Medford Transcript, it appears that the opening of Wegmans at the Meadow Glen Mall will be part of a major transformation of the site that would include the closing of all non-anchor stores (approximately 40 in all) and the development becoming a shopping center with outdoor entrances only. The Transcript says that Marshalls and Kohls will remain in operation, and a fourth anchor may be opening at the site as well.]

Existing locations of Wegmans can be found in Burlington, Chestnut Hill, Northborough, and Westwood, with upcoming stores planned for Boston's Fenway neighborhood and at the Natick Mall as well. The website for Wegmans can be found at http://www.wegmans.com/

Thanks to @blumie of Eater Boston for initially bringing this to our attention.

[January 26, 2016 update: According to a flyer that was posted on a source's Facebook page, the Meadow Glen Mall is closing down on Monday, February 1, though Marshalls and Kohls will stay open during its transformation into what appears to be an outdoor shopping center that will include a Wegmans.]

[May 10, 2016 update: According to a Facebook post from Ron Newman, demolition of the Meadow Glen Mall is now "well underway," with Kohl's and Marshall's still open, though Kohl's is now smaller in size.]

[August 9, 2017 update: A jobs page within the Wegmans site indicates that the new store in Medford plans to open on November 5.]

Medford Brewing Company on the Way

It looks like another beer company is getting ready to hit the local scene.

DigBoston is reporting that Nick Bolitho and Max Heinegg of Medford Brewing Company are looking to find space at a contract brewery where they can produce the company's beer, with Heinegg currently brewing beer in his basement. The article mentions that it it not yet known exactly what kinds of beers will come out of Medford Brewing Company, though Bolitho says that they want to appeal to "normal people" by putting out flavorful beers, while also catering to hop lovers as well.

If all goes well and the necessary paperwork and permits are worked out, Medford Brewing Company could be opening sometime in the late fall or early winter, according to DigBoston.

The website for Medford Brewing Company will be at http://medfordbrewingcompany.com/

[October 3, 2016 update: Boston Magazine states that Medford Brewing Company has just started releasing its American Pale Ale, with this beer being the only one available for now. The article says that the company is currently making its beer out of Great North Aleworks in Manchester, NH, though it does hope to find its own brewing facility in Medford if possible (Medford Square and West Medford are both mentioned).]
