Quencher Tavern in South Boston Is Closing

It looks like a dive bar in South Boston that was once featured on a popular food/travel show is closing its doors.

According to a Boston Licensing Board page, the Quencher Tavern on I Street is seeking to transfer its liquor license to the Painted Burro, which is going to be opening a new location on Temple Place in Boston's Downtown Crossing area. The Quencher Tavern was one of several spots in South Boston that Anthony Bourdain visited in 2011 for No Reservations, a show on the Travel Channel that ended last year. A few other places that Bourdain went to in Southie included Rondo's Sub Shop, Murphy's Law, the Galley Diner, and the L Street Tavern.

As soon as we confirm that the bar will be closing its doors, we will post an update here.

[August 22 update: It has now been confirmed that the Painted Burro has indeed purchased the liquor license from the Quencher Tavern, and one poster on Twitter says that the bar may be closing around November. (More updates will be posted as soon as we get them.)]

[November 11 update: The Caught in Southie site states (as do a number of folks on Twitter) that the Quencher Tavern had a "farewell" block party outside the bar yesterday.]

[November 12 update: We have now learned that contrary to all the reports over the weekend, the Quencher Tavern's farewell party was not actually its farewell, and that it will be open for approximately two more weeks. Thanks to one of our sources (who is a Boston-area chef and lives in the neighborhood) for bringing this to our attention.]

[November 27 update: South Boston Today reports that the Quencher Tavern closes its doors for good tonight (and this has been confirmed by folks on Facebook yesterday and today.]

Anthony Bourdain's "No Reservations" Boston Episode to Be Shown Monday, April 18

A popular food-based show on the Travel Channel will be airing its Boston episode this coming Monday, and it looks like a number of local restaurants and watering holes will be featured, including a few in South Boston.

According to the channel's website, Anthony Bourdain's "No Reservations" will take a peek at the city on April 18 at 9:00 PM (EST), with a focus more on lesser-known neighborhood hangouts than popular eateries and touristy spots. The interactive map within the "No Reservations" section of the Travel Channel site indicates that Bourdain visits such South Boston places as Rondo's Sub Shop, Murphy's Law, the Galley Diner, the Quencher Tavern, and the L Street Tavern. Other spots that he checks out in the Boston area include The Snack Bar in Cambridge, Belle Isle Seafood in East Boston, Michael's Deli in Brookline, and Greenhills Bakery (not actually shown in the episode) and the Eire Pub in Dorchester.

In addition to the above restaurants and bars, Anthony Bourdain also heads to South Boston Candlepin and Peter Welch's Gym (both in Southie) as well as the Savin Hill Yacht Club in Dorchester. He also pays a visit to radio talk show host Howie Carr, and spends time at the Liberty Hotel in Boston, where he and his crew stayed.

Live Streaming Video of Anthony Bourdain in Boston on Wednesday, January 5, 2011

The host of the Travel Channel's popular TV show "No Reservations" is currently in Boston filming for the show, and it looks like fans will be able to see him "live" tomorrow (Wednesday, January 5).

According to the Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations Facebook page, live streaming video of Bourdain in Boston will be shown on Facebook, with exact times to be announced on the show's Facebook page. As soon as we receive updates on times, we will post updates here, or you can go directly to the No Reservations Facebook page (see link below) to find out when the video will be up and running. (We will also be posting updates on the Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook page and the Hiddenboston Twitter page.)

So far, it appears that Bourdain has checked out The Galley Diner on P Street in South Boston, and there have also been several other "sightings" of the TV personality, writer, and chef in and around Boston, though none have been confirmed as of yet.
