The Fox Den Opens in Woburn

Last summer it was reported that a new restaurant featuring dishes with Polish and Portuguese influences would be coming to a space north of Boston, and now we have learned that it is in the process of opening.

According to a source (Aron Levy), The Fox Den has soft-opened in Woburn, moving into the space on Main Street that had been home to the Black and Orange Bar and Grill, and before that, the Tanner Tavern. A few items offered at the new dining spot include Azorean mussels, deviled eggs, candied bacon, kale soup, pizza topped with kielbasa, linguica panini, Portuguese fried rice, shrimp Mozambique, macaroni and cheese, salt cod, and cheesecake.

The Fox Den Plans to Open in the Former Black and Orange Bar and Grill/Tanner Tavern Space in Woburn

A new restaurant that features the cuisines of two European countries may be on its way to the northern suburbs of Boston.

According to a Facebook post, The Fox Den is looking to open in Woburn, with a Mainvest page for the spot indicating that it would be moving into the space on Main Street that had been home to the Black and Orange Bar and Grill, and before that, the Tanner Tavern. The new restaurant plans to offer Polish and Portuguese food, including "sausages, stews, warm and comforting food that makes you feel like home," and that the Wild Fox Restaurant Group--which runs the pop-up business Wild Fox Pierogi--is behind the dining spot.

Polish Prince Pierogi Is Opening in the Former Roma Bakery Space in North Billerica

A local vendor that offers a popular comfort food item will be opening a brick-and-mortar location in the northern suburbs of Boston.

According to a source (Aron Levy), Polish Prince Pierogi is planning to open in the former Roma Bakery space on Boston Road in North Billerica, with an Instagram post from the business saying that "You might have noticed that our event and delivery schedule has slowed down quite a bit. Well...we'd finally like to share why. It's because we have sped up the build out of our new kitchen and storefront!" No opening date has been given as of yet, with the post saying to "stayed tuned for progress updates and more details."

Polish Prince Pierogi currently sells its pierogi at farmers markets as well as online, with an array of meat, veggie/starch, seafood, and dessert fillings offered.

Cafe Polonia Reopens in South Boston

A couple of months ago, it was reported that the only Polish restaurant in Boston had shut down, but a surprising announcement has just come from the people behind the place.

According to multiple sources (including a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page), Cafe Polonia in South Boston opens back up today, with a Facebook post from the Dorchester Avenue eatery confirming this, saying that "We are happy to announce that after almost a year, Cafe Polonia is reopening on Friday January 8, 2021!" Back in November, we were told by a source that the restaurant was no longer in business, and a message sent to us at the time from Baltic European Deli (which is affiliated to the dining spot and resides across the street) said that it had indeed closed its doors.

Cafe Polonia first opened in 2002, with the place offering such items as beef tripe soup, kielbasa and cabbage stew, pierogi, blood sausage, potato pancakes with smoked salmon, pork chops, rainbow trout, and more.

Cafe Polonia in South Boston Has Closed

It looks like the only Polish restaurant in the Boston area has shut down.

According to a source, Cafe Polonia in South Boston is no longer in business, with a message from Baltic European Deli (which is affiliated to the dining spot and resides across the street) confirming that it has indeed closed down. The Dorchester Avenue eatery, which first opened in 2002, featured such items as blood sausage, potato pancakes with smoked salmon, beef tripe soup, pierogi, kielbasa and cabbage stew, potato dumplings, pork chops, rainbow trout, and more. 

Baltic European Deli remains in operation, with the place offering a variety of prepared foods, baked goods, and deli items.

Cafe Polonia in Salem to Close

A pair of Polish restaurants in the Boston area will soon be down to just one, as its North Shore location is going to be closing.

The Salem Patch is reporting that Cafe Polonia in Salem will shutter on January 31 after being in business for a bit more than two years. The article states that while the Washington Street spot will soon be gone, the original location of the eatery on Dorchester Avenue in South Boston will remain open.

[February 8 update: The Salem Gazette mentions that Cafe Polonia's last day in operation in Salem will be Tuesday (February 12).]

Cafe Polonia offers an array of Polish and East European dishes, including goulash, pierogi, kielbasa, and crepes.

Zaps in Allston Has Apparently Closed

It looks like a quick-food dining spot in Allston that featured Polish sandwiches has closed its doors.

According to a poster on the Chowhound site, Zaps on Brighton Avenue has had a "Closed for Renovations" sign up for awhile. A check on the restaurant's website shows that it no longer exists, and a call placed to the spot indicated that their phone has been disconnected.

Zaps first opened about a year ago, focusing on cheap eats for the college crowds that populate this Boston neighborhood. The menu included "zaps," or Polish-style open-faced sandwiches, as well as some panini options.

Cafe Polonia Opening in Salem

It looks like a Polish restaurant in South Boston may soon be opening a second location on the North Shore.

According to both a poster on Chowhound and another on Yelp, Cafe Polonia is looking to open a new, bigger place in Salem. The poster on Chowhound, who happens to be Boston food writer MC Slim JB, mentions that the upcoming Cafe Polonia will be located on Washington Street next to the Upper Crust Pizzeria, which is a short distance south of Essex Street in the heart of the downtown area. MC Slim JB also states that the restaurant may be open sometime this summer.

[August 27 update: According to the SalemArchives Twitter page, the new Cafe Polonia in Salem may be opening on September 8, and the exact address will be 118 Washington Street. Thanks to North Shore Dish for bringing this to our attention.]

[October 1 update: According to their Twitter page, the new Cafe Polonia in Salem is going to be opening next Wednesday (October 6).]

The original Cafe Polonia, which is located on Dorchester Avenue just outside of Andrew Square in South Boston, features a variety of Polish and East European fare, including beet soup, pierogi, Hungarian goulash, crepes, potato pancakes, and kielbasa.

Zaps Opens in Allston

A fast-food restaurant with a Polish bent is now open in the Allston section of Boston. Zaps recently opened its doors on Brighton Avenue in the heart of the neighborhood, serving inexpensive food to what will likely be a big college contingent. The menu includes "zaps," or Polish-style open-faced sandwiches, and paninis. Some of the zaps featured are a traditional (mushroom and cheese), as well as an Italian, Greek, Caprese, and Hawaiian. Paninis offered include a tuna melt, Capri, and ham.

Hours for Zaps are 11:30 AM to 10:00 PM (Monday to Thursday), 11:30 AM to 1:00 AM (Friday and Saturday), and 11:30 AM to 10:00 PM (Sunday).

Our Latest Review: Skip's Roadside Diner in Gill, MA

The latest review on the Boston's Hidden Restaurants site is Skip's Roadside Diner, a a tiny roadside food stand on Route 2 in Gill, MA. Skip's Roadside Diner serves inexpensive Polish and Italian dishes, and while it has no indoor seating, it does have picnic tables on the grounds. The Polish items at Skip's are particularly good, and include kapusta, kielbasa, and pierogies.
