Dave Andelman Steps Down as CEO of Phantom Gourmet

The head of a popular local food show has resigned.

According to a Facebook post, Dave Andelman of the Phantom Gourmet is stepping down from his position as CEO, while also resigning from the Mendon Twin Drive-In. The post says that he will not be on any future episodes of the television show and will no longer be involved in its day-to-day operations. Dan Andelman, who has been the host of the television show, will now be the CEO of the Phantom Gourmet.

The resignation of Andelman comes on the heels of  a series of controversial comments he made on Facebook concerning the Black Lives Matter protests, which led to WBZ putting the Phantom Gourmet show on hiatus.

This is a developing story, so stay tuned for more updates.

America's Test Kitchen Files Lawsuit Against Christopher Kimball

It looks like the split between a local food media outlet and its co-founder could be taking a nasty turn.

The Boston Globe is reporting that the Brookline-based America's Test Kitchen (ATK) has filed a lawsuit against Christopher Kimball, citing that he "literally and conceptually ripped off" the company by creating a new business called Milk Street while still being paid by America's Test Kitchen, and using the recipes and databases of ATK in a way so Milk Street would be a direct competitor. A lawyer who represents Kimball declined to comment because he had not taken a look at the lawsuit as of yesterday.

In the fall of 2015, Kimball said goodbye to America's Test Kitchen after a change of leadership took place a couple of months earlier. He subsequently went on to launch what was originally called Milk Street Kitchen, though it now appears to be simply called Milk Street, according to the Globe. Much like ATK, Milk Street has a magazine along with television and radio shows, and it also includes a cooking school.

America's Test Kitchen to Move from Brookline Village to Boston's Seaport District

A company in Brookline that is known for its TV show and magazines is moving to a new--and bigger--location on the Boston waterfront.

The Boston Globe is reporting that America's Test Kitchen will be saying goodbye to its headquarters on Station Street in Brookline Village and will head to a 55,000-square-foot space within the Innovation and Design Building near the Black Falcon cruise ship terminal in the summer of 2017. The article says that the new space will include at least four kitchens, with three being used for production of "America's Test Kitchen," "Cook's Country," and a new show called "Cook's Science," while a fourth kitchen will be used for tastings and testings of food.

America's Test Kitchen started out in 1992 with the magazine Cook's Illustrated, which was followed by the show by the same name and the magazine Cook's Country along with a radio show and books. Founder Christopher Kimball left the company in the fall of 2015 and subsequently started a new food-based media outlet called Milk Street Kitchen in downtown Boston.

[May 12, 2017 update: Boston Magazine states that America's Test Kitchen will move into its new home on the waterfront in September, and that it will have a food festival there on October 27 and 28.]

Update: Christopher Kimball (Founder of America's Test Kitchen) to Launch Milk Street Kitchen

[Ed note: This article--which was originally posted on April 6--was updated on May 31 to reflect new information given, including a different name for the venture.]

The founder of a local company known for its popular TV show and magazines is working on a new venture.

According to a Twitter post from @DGoodison of The Boston Herald in April, Christopher Kimball (America's Test Kitchen, Cook's Illustrated, Cook's Country) has signed a lease at 177 Milk Street in downtown Boston for a business listed as CPK Media, with a now-expired job post on the AIGA site saying that "Christopher Kimball, founder and creator of Cook's Illustrated and Cook's Country magazines and founder of 'America's Test Kitchen,' has set out to launch a new multi-channel cooking venture." A new article from the New York Times states that Kimball's new business will actually be called Milk Street Kitchen, and it will include a public television series, a brand new magazine, a cooking school, and more, with Kimball also looking to start writing books as well. The post says that Kimball's new venture will focus on "global flavors" rather than looking at New England fare, which is a large part of what he did at America's Test Kitchen. If all goes as planned, Milk Street Kitchen should officially launch sometime this fall.

Last fall, Christopher Kimball left America's Test Kitchen following a change of leadership that took place a couple of months earlier, and apparently, a contract dispute. At the time, it looked like Kimball and his wife Melissa Baldino might be starting up a new company, though no information had been given on the venture at the time.

America's Test Kitchen started out in 1992 with the magazine Cook’s Illustrated, with the show by the same name and the magazine Cook's Country coming later as well as a radio show and books. The headquarters for ATK are in Brookline Village.

Christopher Kimball to Leave America's Test Kitchen

The co-founder of a local company known for its popular TV show and magazines is saying goodbye, and it appears that a contract dispute may be behind his departure.

The Boston Globe is reporting that Christopher Kimball is leaving America's Test Kitchen "immediately" following a change of leadership that took place a couple of months ago. The article says that sources mention Kimball and his wife Melissa Baldino might be creating a new company, while David Nussbaum--who became the CEO of the company in September--hints to a contract issue, saying "We made every effort to offer Chris a reasonable contract that reflected his significant contributions to the company and are disappointed that we could not reach agreement."

America's Test Kitchen first started out in 1992 with the magazine Cook’s Illustrated, with the show by the same name and the magazine Cook's Country following, along with a radio show, books, and more. Its headquarters are in Brookline Village.

[Ed note: This article was updated on Febraury 4, 2014, to reflect a name given to the show, as well as the date of its premiere.]

The hosts of a canceled food show on NECN are going to be heading up a new show on another station.

The Boston Globe is reporting that Billy Costa and Jenny Johnson of "TV Diner" will co-host Dining Playbook, a show on NESN that focuses on food, including restaurant reviews and cooking demos. The article says that the show will also have some segments that are connected to sports, including looking at where athletes dine out. It appears that Herb Chambers, who heads up a large auto dealership group in the local area, will be a "major sponsor" of Dining Playbook, according to the Globe.

NECN announced the canceling of "TV Diner" in September, with the station looking to have more of a news and weather-based format with less emphasis on lifestyle shows. The show had been on for more than a decade.

Paul Wahlberg, who is the brother of Mark and Donnie and is the executive chef of Wahlburgers, will also be in the unscripted series, along with other family members and various friends.

TV Diner to Be Taken Off the Air by NECN

A popular restaurant review show on NECN is going to be leaving the airwaves.

According to a source earlier this evening, TV Diner is being canceled, with a Boston Globe article confirming this. The Globe says that a big shakeup is currently taking place at NECN, with the station apparently moving toward more of a news and weather-based format with less emphasis on lifestyle shows.

[September 30 update: It appears that TV Diner might not be quite done yet, as one post on its Facebook page from Friday says to "enjoy our last handful of show" while another from yesterday says that the show is going off the air "eventually. everything is up in the air" and a third post from today says in answer to the questions "How many more new episodes before the show ends? Will there be a finale wrap up episode?" "don't know yet. i will let you know as soon as i find out."]

TV Diner started out more than a decade ago, with Billy Costa of Kiss 108 at the helm from the start; Jenny Johnson joined the weekly food show a few years later.

Kitchen Nightmares Is Coming to La Galleria 33 in Boston's North End

Earlier this year, we reported that a reality TV series that stars a celebrity chef was getting ready to cast for the next season, and the show had been looking to return to Boston once again. Now we have word that the show will indeed be back in Beantown, returning to the neighborhood it was in a little awhile back.

NorthEndWaterfront.com is reporting that Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares will be looking to help La Galleria 33 in Boston's North End, with filming for the upcoming episode beginning this week. The Fox show had been in the North End in late 2010 (with the episode being shown in early 2011) at Davide on Commercial Street, with Ramsay revisiting the eatery in the summer of 2011--and he was apparently happy with how the restaurant was looking, according to NorthEndWaterfront.com.

[October 11 update: Eater Boston mentions that La Galleria 33 will be featured on Kitchen Nightmares on Friday, October 26 at 8:00 PM, with Part 2 of the show airing on Friday, November 2 at 8:00 PM.]

Kitchen Nightmares first premiered in 2007, with the show focusing on Chef Ramsay going around the United States to help revive troubled restaurants. The website for the show can be found at http://www.fox.com/kitchennightmares/

The address for La Galleria 33 is: La Galleria 33, 125 Salem Street, Boston, MA, 02113.

Kitchen Nightmares Is Casting (and Wants to Hear from Boston)

A reality TV series that stars a celebrity chef is getting ready to cast for the next season, and the show is looking at the Boston area once again. Emails sent to us by producers of the show indicate that Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares is getting ready for Season 5 and, as was the case with Season 3, it is targeting Massachusetts, including Boston and surrounding communities. The show, which can be seen on Fox, has Chef Ramsay going around the United States to help revive troubled restaurants. In Season 3, Kitchen Nightmares featured Davide, an Italian restaurant in Boston's North End.

[January 17 update: Not a surprise, but it turns out that Boston is not the only city that is being looked at by Kitchen Nightmares for its new season. The cleveland.com states that Cleveland, Los Angeles, New York City, and Pittsburgh are also in the running. The article also mentions that eligible restaurants are required to have been open for at least one year, offer dinner service, not be a chain or a franchise, and have at least 35 seats.]

The show is in the process of taking applications and nominations--for more information, please go to the link below.

Paul, Mark, and Donnie Wahlberg May Make Reality Series about Wahlburgers in Hingham

As we reported awhile back. Paul Wahlberg--along with his celebrity brothers Mark and Donnie--is getting ready to open a burger restaurant in Hingham called Wahlburgers, and now it appears that the brothers may actually be looking at making a reality show based on the opening of the eatery.

According to E! Online, Mark Wahlberg mentioned yesterday that he and his brothers are looking into creating a reality series following the opening of Wahlburgers, though Mark isn't sure he will actually be on the show, other than people hearing him speak. In the article, Mark muses that "Maybe I'll be the Charlie's Angels of reality TV" and "You'll hear my voice. But obviously it's something that we'd want to control in every aspect and produce and make sure that we were doing something really quality."

Wahlburgers, which will be opening in the Hingham Shipyard (where Paul Wahlberg's other restaurant Alma Nove resides) looks to feature hot dogs, fries and frappes in its nearly 3,000-square-foot space that will include a full bar and outdoor dining. Another dining spot from Paul and his brothers is also on the way to the Shipyard--a pizzeria called Pizzeria Diciannove.

The address for this upcoming burger restaurant will be: Wahlburgers, 19 Shipyard Drive, Hingham, MA, 02043.

Thanks to The Boston Globe for initially bringing this to our attention.
