Rangzen Tibetan Place in Cambridge's Central Square Has Closed

A Cambridge restaurant that focused on a cuisine not often found in the Greater Boston area has shut down.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Rangzen Tibetan Place in the city's Central Square area is shuttered, with a Facebook post from the Pearl Street eatery saying the following:

It was a beautiful 25 years of experience to serve our cuisine and let you see a glimpse of Tibet. Thank you all for your support especially on pandemic period. Now it time for us to say, so long and exit with dignity and humility. Please, accept our gratitude and prayers. We hope "Rangzen Tibetan Place" will be in your sweet memories. Thank you and Tashi Delek

Rangzen, which first opened in 1999, was one of only a few local dining spots that focused on Tibetan fare, with Martsa on Elm in Somerville's Davis Square featuring Tibetan cuisine while some Nepalese and Indian restaurants also offer some Tibetan dishes as well.

Taste of the Himalayas Opens in Tewksbury

A new restaurant that features Nepali, Indian, and Tibetan cuisine has opened in the northern suburbs of Boston.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Taste of the Himalayas is now open in Tewksbury, moving into the space on Main Street that had been home to Saffron Indian Grill. Based on its social media, it appears that this is a rebranding under the same ownership, as one of its posts says that "We've reopened as Taste of the Himalayas."

The menu for Taste of the Himalayas includes such items as naan, mo:mo, goat curry, chicken tandoori, lamb biryani, tofu chili, and more.

Green Mama May Be Opening in the House of Tibet Space in Somerville's Teele Square

It looks like a new vegetarian restaurant may be opening in Somerville, and it would be taking over the space where a Tibetan spot resides.

According to an article from Eater Boston, Green Mama is planning to open in Teele Square, moving into the House of Tibet space on Holland Street. The person behind the planned eatery is currently raising funds for the place and if all goes well, the restaurant would feature grain bowls and an array of avocado toast options, with gluten-free and vegan items available.

House of Tibet has been in the space that Green Mama is looking at for approximately 20 years.

Tasty Mo:Mo: Is Opening in Somerville

A new eatery is looking to open in Somerville, and the name of the place gives away what it will be serving.

Eater Boston is reporting that Tasty Mo:Mo: is planning on opening in Magoun Square, with the Medford Street dining spot offering momos, which are dumplings found in Tibet and Nepal; the restaurant's Facebook page also mentions that a Nepalese food plate with items such as rice, meat curry, vegetables, chutney, and lentils will be available as well. According to EB, Tasty Mo:Mo: will apparently be a takeout and catering spot at first, but it could become a dine-in restaurant at some point.

The Eater Boston article also says that Tasty Mo:Mo: will donate a dollar for every plate of momos sold to the Food for Education trust, which helps feed children in Nepal.

Martsa on Elm in Somerville's Davis Square Is Open Once Again

A couple of months ago, we reported that a Tibetan restaurant in Somerville had closed, with a sign out front saying that it would open under new management. Now we have learned that the eatery is open once again.

Eater Boston is reporting that Martsa on Elm in Davis Square has indeed reopened under new management, though it is not yet known what changes, if any, have come to the Elm Street spot. The restaurant shuttered in October after being in business for about ten years.

In addition to Tibetan food, Martsa on Elm has also been a place to go to for Nepalese and and Himalayan fare.

Martsa on Elm in Somerville's Davis Square Has Closed; Status Unknown

A Tibetan restaurant in one of Somerville's busiest neighborhoods has closed, and it it not known whether it will reopen or become a new dining spot.

A poster on the Davis Square Live Journal page mentions that Martsa on Elm in Davis Square is shuttered, with a sign out front saying that it will reopen under new management. The restaurant, which first opened approximately ten years ago, featured a variety of Tibetan, Nepalese, and Himalayan dishes, including curried lentil soup, baked Tibetan-style bread, momos, potato patties, sliced beef with green chili peppers, spicy creamy chicken, and curried potatoes.

El Centro Dos Is Replacing Tashi Delek in Brookline Village

It looks like the person behind a Mexican restaurant in the South End of Boston is going to be opening a second location, taking over the space in Brookline Village where a Tibetan eatery has been.

A Board of Selectmen calendar page from the Town of Brookline site indicates that the owners of Tashi Delek on Washington Street were seeking approval last month to transfer their All Kinds of Alcoholic Beverages License as a Common Victualler to Rabiul Islam, the owner and manager of El Centro. A page on the manta site shows that Rabiul Islam is president of Siraj Corp, whose address is 474 Shawmut Avenue in Boston's South End. El Centro restaurant is located at 472 Shawmut Avenue, and the restaurant that had been in that space before El Centro (under the same ownership) had been called Siraj Cafe, which seems to confirm that the upcoming spot in Brookline is indeed connected with the one in the South End.

[October 18 update: Eater Boston is reporting that Tashi Delek will be closing at the end of October, while the Brookline Patch mentions that the Brookline Board of Selectmen has approved the license transfer, with El Centro possibly opening in December.]

[April 3, 2013 update: Zagat says that the new El Centro (called El Centro Dos) in Brookline is now planning to open sometime this month.]

[June 21, 2013 update: CBH Communications says that El Centro Dos will open next Thursday (June 27).]

[June 27, 2013 update: Eater Boston confirms that El Centro Dos opens today, though it will only be open for dinner for now (expect it to be open for lunch on weekdays soon).]

Tashi Delek first opened in October of 2007, while the original El Centro in the South End opened its doors in May of 2011.
