According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, The Buzzin' Bean is opening in Teele Square, taking over the former Istanbul'lu space on Holland Street. The social media for the eatery indicates that it appears to be going through a soft opening, though an official grand opening date has not been announced as of yet; a What Now article mentions that the place plans to offer vegetarian items, with the menu having soups, salads, sandwiches, bowls, and coffee.

The Hollows to Open in the Former Rudy's Cafe Space in Somerville's Teele Square

This past weekend, a decades-old Tex-Mex restaurant in Somerville closed its doors forever, and now we have learned that a new spot is moving into the space.

According to an article in The Boston Globe, The Hollows is planning to open in the former Rudy's Cafe space in Teele Square, with Charlie Redd of Dragon Pizza in Davis Square and business partners Doug Sherman and Bridget Zerner being behind it. Little information on the upcoming place has been given other than Redd telling the Globe that it will be a "neighborhood haunt" and that "I'm excited to get back into the approachability of craft cooking. We're not doing a lot of heavy construction. It's got great bones, and we're preserving a lot of the patina that's there, keeping the fireplace." It isn't known exactly when The Hollows might open, though the article says that the trio will take over the space sometime this spring.

Rudy's first opened in 1982, offering such options as nachos, tacos, burritos, enchiladas, quesadillas, and chimichangas, and it was also known in part for its margaritas.

Rudy's Cafe in Somerville's Teele Square Is Closing

It looks like a longtime Tex-Mex restaurant in Somerville is shutting down.

According to multiple sources, Rudy's Cafe in Teele Square is closing its doors, with a Patch article seeming to confirm this, saying that January 19 will be its last day in operation according to management. The article says that management didn't give a reason for the closure of the Holland Street eatery, but said that it is indeed a permanent closure.

Rudy's, which first opened in 1982, has been known for such options as nachos, burritos, quesadillas, tacos, enchiladas, and chimichangas, along with a variety of margaritas.

Crave Cafe Is Opening in the Former Renee's Cafe Space in Somerville

A new restaurant appears to be on its way to Somerville, opening in the space where a popular breakfast and lunch spot had been until closing last year.

According to a source, a sign is now up for Crave Cafe which is planning to open just outside of Teele Square, moving into the former Renee's Cafe on Holland Street. A draft minutes page from earlier this year seems to confirm this while also saying that the upcoming dining spot will offer "American cuisine with a Mediterranean twist," while its menu shows a variety of breakfast items along with soups, salads, and sandwiches.

True Bistro in Somerville's Teele Square Is Closing Permanently

A vegan restaurant in Somerville whose future had been in question in the early days of the pandemic will soon be shutting down for good.

According to a Facebook post from the place, True Bistro in Teele Square is closing its doors after business hours on August 27, with the post saying the following:

News you may not want to hear but here it goes. We can't thank you all enough for the support and love over the years, for choosing us to help celebrate life's big moments, and for embracing the vegan dishes we’ve created and shared.

A note within the post indicates that the closure of True Bistro--which shut down indefinitely in September of 2020 but reopened the following spring--stems from the cost of labor, increased food prices, and not being able to reach pre-pandemic sales while also using up its government funding from the pandemic.

Yego Coffee Opens in Somerville's Teele Square

A Rwandan coffee shop has come to Somerville.

Eater Boston is reporting (via The Somerville Times) that Yego Coffee is now open on Broadway in Teele Square, with Francois and Fatuma Tuyishime being behind the place. The articles mention that Francois comes from a coffee farming family in Southwestern Rwanda, moving to the Boston area and going to Brandeis where he received a master's degree, then getting back into the world of coffee, starting an online brand and being at local farmers markets.

Broadway Eatery in Somerville's Teele Square Has Closed

A Somerville dining spot that focused on takeout has shut down.

According to a source, Broadway Eatery in the city's Teele Square area is no longer in business, with the place apparently closing its doors over the past few days. We have heard that a nearby food shop is planning to move into its space, though details on that have not yet been made public, so keep checking back for updates.

Broadway Eatery offered such items as pizza, calzones, subs, burgers, wings, tenders, gyros, steak tips, rice bowls and more.

True Bistro in Somerville's Teele Square Has Reopened

A vegan restaurant in Somerville whose future had been in question has opened back up.

According to its Facebook page, True Bistro in Teele Square reopened late last month, though it is only open Thursday through Sunday for takeout/delivery for the time being, with outdoor dining apparently on the way at some point. The Broadway eatery, which closed until further notice last September, has been in business for approximately ten years, offering dishes such as white bean dip, herbed cashew boursin, veggie lasagna, macaroni and cheese (using cashew cheese), green curry, and more.

The Balloon Factory by FAB Beer Plans to Open in Somerville

The people behind a brand new gastropub in Somerville are also working on opening a brewery within the city as well.

Eater Boston is reporting that The Balloon Factory by FAB Beer is looking to open on Broadway just east of Teele Square, with a fundraising page saying that the facility would focus on beer, wine, and liquor sales on-site along with regional distribution of its contract-brewed beer. The fundraising page also says that the space would include a bar and a large outdoor area, with both large and small events being part of the plans including weddings, parties, wine and cheese flight nights, cocktail-making classes, and more. The business is looking for a total of $100,000 in funds over the next two months or so and is about a quarter of the way to that goal.

The FAB team has also collaborated with the people behind the now-closed Bergamot restaurant on Washington Street to open the brand new FAB gastropub in that space, which is a combination restaurant/art gallery.

True Bistro in Somerville's Teele Square Is Closing Indefinitely

A vegan restaurant in Somerville is getting ready to close down for the foreseeable future.

According to a source, True Bistro in Teele Square is shutting down indefinitely, with a Facebook post from the Broadway eatery saying the following:

We're really sad to say that this Sunday brunch 9/6/2020 will be our last service until further notice. We will miss all of you! The best way that you can take action to protect independent restaurants, is to contact your local representative about the Restaurants Act and ask that they pass this business-saving legislation. If you're interested, more information on the Restaurants Act is available at saverestaurants.com. Thank you!

True Bistro first opened approximately ten years ago in the space where Teele Square Cafe had once been, with the restaurant offering vegan dishes including white bean dip, herbed cashew boursin, pasta salad, macaroni and cheese (using cashew cheese), green curry, veggie lasagna, shepherd's pie, and more.

Happy Crab Is Opening in the Former Amelia's Space in Somerville's Teele Square

A new seafood restaurant is on its way to Somerville, and it will replace an Italian spot that had been in business for many years.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Happy Crab is planning to open in Teele Square, taking over the space where Amelia's has been. The poster says that the Broadway eatery will be a "Seafood restaurant with dine in and take out service and bar" while a poster in the window of the storefront indicates that it will focus at least in part on Cajun seafood. An opening date has not been given for Happy Crab, with a sign out front simply saying "coming soon."

Amelia's, which offered such items as pizza, freshly-made pasta, and panini, first opened approximately 25 years ago.

Sabur Restaurant in Somerville's Teele Square Has Apparently Closed

A Somerville restaurant that featured a cuisine that isn't all that easy to find in the Greater Boston area has shuttered, and it appears to be a permanent closure.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Sabur in Teele Square appears to have closed for good, as the sign has been taken down and people are working on the space. A poster on the Davis Square Facebook group page seems to have confirmed this a few weeks ago, saying that the "closed for renovations" sign (which had been up since the late spring) had been taken down, and the poster was told that the Holland Street dining spot was indeed shutting down permanently. (A call placed to the restaurant indicates that the phone is out of service.)

Sabur first opened just under 20 years ago, offering Balkan fare along with Mediterranean food items; its menu including such options as grilled shrimp wrapped in vine leaves, slow roasted lamb, potato and celery root cakes, beet risotto, veggie tagine, maple polenta cakes, and a wild fig sundae.

Green Mama May Be Opening in the House of Tibet Space in Somerville's Teele Square

It looks like a new vegetarian restaurant may be opening in Somerville, and it would be taking over the space where a Tibetan spot resides.

According to an article from Eater Boston, Green Mama is planning to open in Teele Square, moving into the House of Tibet space on Holland Street. The person behind the planned eatery is currently raising funds for the place and if all goes well, the restaurant would feature grain bowls and an array of avocado toast options, with gluten-free and vegan items available.

House of Tibet has been in the space that Green Mama is looking at for approximately 20 years.

Knight Moves Is Expanding to Somerville's Teele Square

A Brookline cafe that is a popular spot with lovers of board games is opening a second space in Somerville.

 Eater Boston is reporting (via a city of Somerville planning staff report page) that Knight Moves in on Beacon Street in Coolidge Corner is planning to move into a space on Broadway in Teele Square, taking over the spot where a hair salon had been. Based on the original location, the new cafe would likely be a place where patrons can play board games and card games for a monthly fee (or by buying day passes), dining on snacks, and drinking coffee, tea, and milkshakes. (EB says that the Somerville shop would have a small coffee bar.)

Knight Moves first opened its doors in Brookline in the fall of 2013.

Amelia's Kitchen in Somerville Has Morphed into West 7 Bistro

A Somerville restaurant that has been in business for nearly 20 years has become a new spot, though the ownership; remains the same.

The Somerville Patch is reporting that Amelia's Kitchen in the Teele Square section of the city is now called West 7 Bistro, with changes from owner Delio Susi including a renovated interior, an updated menu, and a full liquor license. The restaurant has some items that had been offered at Amelia's (such as panini), but it also has new items such as steak tips and a "West 7 Burger," according to the Patch. Other items on the menu at West 7 Bistro include pasta dishes and vegetarian options.

Amelia's Kitchen first opened approximately 18 years ago.

Kee Kar Lau in Somerville Suffers Extensive Damage in Fire

A Chinese restaurant that has been in the Teele Square section of Somerville for more than a decade was one of at least three businesses that was damaged or destroyed in a major fire over the weekend.

According to the Somerville Journal and Wicked Local, a three-alarm fire hit a block of businesses on Broadway where Kee Kar Lau is located. The article states that the eatery was "gutted," though a Somerville Patch article mentions that the fire stopped before it reached Kee Kar Lau, with "extensive damage" including three feet of water in its basement. The fire began behind Hawk Cleaners, which appears to have been destroyed, and then spread to the Nail Image nail salon, which is between Hawk Cleaners and Kee Kar Lau.

The Patch article says that no injuries were reported in the fire, and that as of this time, it has not been determined what started the blaze.

Masala Is Opening in Somerville's Teele Square

An Indian and Nepali restaurant is planning to open in the Teele Square section of Somerville, moving into the space where a Thai restaurant used to be.

A check on the space over the weekend confirms that Masala is going to be opening on Broadway in the heart of the square, taking over the spot that was home to Tip Top Thai for about six years before it closed in the summer of 2010. Once it opens, Masala will join several other restaurants in the immediate area that feature at least some Nepali dishes, including House of Tibet in Teele Square, Yak and Yeti in Ball Square, Martsa on Elm in Davis Square, Kathmandu Spice in East Arlington, and Annapurna in North Cambridge.

Currently, there is no specific opening date for Masala; as soon as we get more information on when it might open, we will post an update here.

True Bistro Opening in Teele Square, Somerville

A new restaurant is getting ready to open in the Teele Square section of Somerville, and it is moving into the space where a cafe closed a few months ago.

According to the Somerville Scout, True Cafe will be opening on Broadway where the Teele Square Cafe used to be until shutting its doors this past June. The article mentions that the new 29-seat eatery will feature vegan dishes as well as beer and wine. The restaurant's website shows the menu including such items as an arugula salad, portobello mushroom panini, Green curry with tofu, black bean and plantain torte, ravioli filled with red chard and house nut cheese, and coconut cream pie.

True Cafe will be open for lunch and dinner Tuesday through Sunday, and it looks like it will also have a weekend brunch.

Tip Top Thai in Somerville Has Closed

A Thai restaurant in the Teele Square section of Somerville has shut its doors after being in business for about six years. According to both Yelp and Chowhound, Tip Top Thai on Broadway has closed, with a Chowhound poster mentioning that there is a "For Rent" sign in the storefront.

Tip Top Thai was a small, casual dining spot that did a good amount of takeout service. Its menu focused mainly on Thai fare, though it also offered Japanese cuisine as well as other Asian dishes.

Teele Square Cafe in Somerville Has Closed

A little more than a year after it first opened, a restaurant in the Teele Square section of Somerville has closed its doors.

According to a post on the Davis Square Community LiveJournal blog, a sign on the door of the Teele Square Cafe indicates that they had shut down for good as of June 4, and a follower of our hiddenboston Twitter page (which is affiliated with this blog) also mentioned that the Broadway eatery is indeed closed. [June 7 update: The Davis Square blog has also posted an update stating that a vegan restaurant called True Bistro is looking to open where the Teele Square Cafe has been.]

The Teele Square Cafe first opened in March, 2009, featuring such items as soups, salads, and sandwiches, as well as more substantial entrees such as vegetable lasagna, roast chicken, and pot roast. The cafe also offered homemade desserts and had a breakfast menu as well.
