On The Border Mexican Grill & Cantina in Woburn Has Closed

The sole Boston-area location of a chain of Tex-Mex restaurants has shut down.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, On The Border Mexican Grill & Cantina in Woburn is no longer in business, with a post from The Connecticut Scoop indicating that it shut down in February along with a location in West Springfield. An article from thestreet.com also mentions that parent company OTB Holding LLC has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, saying that "40 non-performing stores" were "closed or vacated" on February 24.

On The Border was founded in Dallas back in 1982

Rudy's Cafe in Somerville's Teele Square Is Closing

It looks like a longtime Tex-Mex restaurant in Somerville is shutting down.

According to multiple sources, Rudy's Cafe in Teele Square is closing its doors, with a Patch article seeming to confirm this, saying that January 19 will be its last day in operation according to management. The article says that management didn't give a reason for the closure of the Holland Street eatery, but said that it is indeed a permanent closure.

Rudy's, which first opened in 1982, has been known for such options as nachos, burritos, quesadillas, tacos, enchiladas, and chimichangas, along with a variety of margaritas.

Fajitas & 'Ritas in Downtown Boston Is Closing

A longtime Tex-Mex restaurant in the heart of Boston is calling it a day.

According to a source, Fajitas & 'Ritas on West Street in the downtown area is shutting down, with a Facebook post from the place saying the following:

After 35 incredible years, Fajitas & 'Ritas will be closing its doors. Our last day will be Saturday, July 13th. We want to thank all our amazing customers for the support and memories we've shared over the years. Join us in early July to celebrate and savor your favorite Tex-Mex dishes and margaritas one last time. Let's make these final days unforgettable!

Fajitas & 'Ritas is a casual spot popular with theatergoers along with office workers in the Financial District, offering such options as fajitas, wings, pulled pork, nachos, tacos, burritos, quesadillas, margaritas, and more.

Sunset Cantina in Boston Is Returning

It looks like a Tex-Mex restaurant that is particularly popular with college students is being reborn.

According its Instagram page, Sunset Cantina on Commonwealth Avenue by Boston University is planning to reopen, with one post saying "A renovated, vibrant and exciting cantina is coming! Are you ready #Boston?" A listing within the Boston Restaurant Group website indicates that the space is under agreement and it has a new lease with BU which hints that there is an ownership change, though no other details have been given.

Sunset Cantina had once been under the same ownership as Sunset Grill & Tap in Allston, but the parent company filed for bankruptcy and Sunset Grill closed while Sunset Cantina ultimately was acquired by East Coast Tavern Group (Emmet's, Roxanne's, Scholars, Carrie Nation). The restaurant--which is known in part for its nachos--has been shuttered for at least a couple of months now.

[January 25, 2023 update: An article from Bostonia indicates that Sunset Cantina is open once again, with Catarina Chang of Koy near Faneuil Hall being the one of the new owners. The post mentions that the restaurant continues to serve the same type of nachos offered in its previous incarnation along with other Tex-Mex faves, while also adding "elevated" authentic Mexican fare to the menu as well. Across the Border Is Opening in Jamaica Plain

The people behind a Tex-Mex food truck are getting ready to open a brick-and-mortar restaurant.

According to an article from the Jamaica Plain News, Across the Border appears to be on the verge of opening in Jamaica Plain, moving into a space on Centre Street in Hyde Square that had been home to Pikalo before it moved down the street. Based on the food truck's offerings, expect to see tacos, burritos, nachos, quesadillas, bowls, and more, including Cheeto burritos, Frito burritos, and Dorito burritos.

Douglas and Shantel Salazar established the Across the Border food truck back in 2018, with the truck offering catering for various events in the Boston area and elsewhere in Massachusetts.

Border Cafe in Cambridge's Harvard Square Will Not Be Reopening

A bit more than a year ago, one of the most popular restaurants in Cambridge's Harvard Square was hit by a fire and has remained closed ever since. Now we are hearing that it is gone for good.

According to an article from Cambridge Day, Border Cafe on Church Street will not be reopening, with a general manager at the Burlington location of the small chain of Tex-Mex restaurants saying that "We decided not [to] reopen that location" and that the decision was reportedly made "at the end of the year." The manager--who Cambridge Day says had previously been a manager at the Harvard Square restaurant--describes the closing as "amicable" while not getting into further details. An update from Cambridge Day this morning further confirms this, saying that Denise Jillson of the Harvard Square Business Association heard about its permanent closure late last week.

The Cambridge location of Border Cafe, which first opened in 1987, suffered damaged in a two-alarm blaze in December of 2019, with the fire starting inside the kitchen's exhaust system. The Burlington location remains open for business, as does the outlet in Saugus.

Mezcala Tex-Mex Grill (Formerly Zuma) in Boston's Faneuil Hall Has Apparently Closed

A longtime Tex-Mex restaurant in the heart of Boston that recently changed its name appears to have shut down permanently.

According to a source within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Mezcala Tex-Mex Grill in Faneuil Hall has closed for good, with a Facebook post from Steve Harnish (who had been a General Manager of the place) saying that "the run is over. It took a worldwide pandemic to kill it, but its officially over. Just was too hard to see a path forward." Mezcala, which has been closed since the outbreak of the coronavirus in March, had been called Zuma Tex-Mex Grill until changing its name early this year after settling a naming controversy between it and Zuma Boston, a high-end Japanese restaurant in the Back Bay that opened last year.

Zuma first opened in Faneuil Hall approximately 20 years ago.

Both Locations of Moe's Southwest Grill in Foxborough Have Closed

Two more locations of a chain of restaurants featuring Tex-Mex food and southwestern fare have closed, and both happen to have been in the same town.

Based on information from a source and a check on the chain's website, the two outlets of Moe's Southwest Grill in Foxborough are no longer in business, with an email sent from the company confirming that the Patriot Place and Foxborough Boulevard restaurants have indeed shut their doors for good. The statement we received is as follows:

The two independently owned and operated Moe's Southwest Grill restaurants in Foxborough, MA have closed. A number of factors go into the decision to close a location. Moe's continues to open new restaurants across the country.

The two Foxborough locations of Moe's join the closing of the Natick outlet which shuttered earlier this summer; it appears that locations in Bellingham, Chelmsford, Littleton, Lowell, and Waltham remain open based on the chain's website, though the exact status of its Brockton restaurant is unknown at this point in time.

The Atlanta-based Moe's Southwest Grill, which started out approximately 20 years ago, offers such items as nachos, burritos, tacos, quesadillas, guacamole, and more. Its website can be found at https://www.moes.com/

Chili's in Danvers Has Closed

A chain of Tex-Mex restaurants continues to disappear from the local landscape, with a North Shore outlet being the latest to close.

According to a source, Chili's in Danvers is no longer in operation, with a Facebook post from Boston's Wicked North Shore saying that it shut down on July 29, while a check within the locations section for the chain seems to confirm this, as the Route 1 outlet is no longer listed. With the closing of the Danvers location, that means that the only Chili's left inside (or fairly close to) Route 128 are in Braintree, Chelsea, Reading, and Walpole, while locations that have closed over the past decade or so include ones in Boston, Brockton, Burlington, Dedham, Framingham, Hingham, and Wilmington.)

Moe's Southwest Grill in Natick Has Closed

A chain of restaurants featuring Tex-Mex food and southwestern fare had closed one of its closest locations to Boston proper.

According to several sources, Moe's Southwest Grill in Natick is no longer in operation, with the locations section of the chain's website seeming to confirm this, as the Route 9 outlet is no longer listed. It does appear that the Moe's location in Waltham remains open along with a few outlets along Route 495, including in Bellingham, Chelmsford, Foxborough (Patriot Place), Littleton, and Lowell, though locations in Brockton and another Foxborough outlet on Foxborough Boulevard appear to remain temporarily closed according to the locations page.

The Atlanta-based Moe's Southwest Grill first started out approximately 20 years ago.

Zuma Tex-Mex Grill at Faneuil Hall to Become Mezcala Tex-Mex Grill

Last summer, it was reported that a naming dispute had developed between two Boston restaurants, with the issue ultimately being settled and that one of the restaurants would be changing its name. Now we have learned what the new name will be.

According to a source (Geoff Wong), Zuma Tex-Mex Grill in Faneuil Hall is going to become Mezcala Tex-Mex Grill, with an events page indicating that a party called "Zuma: The Last Stand" will take place on January 31 and that Mezcala will debut the following day. The page mentions that no changes to its menu or ownership will be taking place, with the only change being its name, while saying "but oh what a party! It took 13 days to defeat the Texas rebels at the Alamo. They went down in a flame of glory and now we want to do the same, so come celebrate good-byes and NEW BEGINNINGS with us and be part of history." As reported earlier, the owners of Zuma Tex-Mex Grill filed a lawsuit against Zuma Boston, a high-end Japanese restaurant at the Four Seasons Hotel One Dalton Street in the Back Bay, and a Superior Court judge subsequently ruled in favor of the former. Several weeks later, it was reported that the dispute was settled "amicably" and that Zuma Tex-Mex Grill would go through a name change.

Two-Alarm Fire Hits Border Cafe in Cambridge's Harvard Square

One of the most popular restaurants in the Harvard Square section of Cambridge is closed for now after a two-alarm fire caused damage to the place.

The Boston Globe is reporting that a blaze broke out at Border Cafe on Church Street at approximately 1:00 PM Sunday afternoon, with the fire being contained a bit more than one hour later. The article says that it looks like the fire started inside the kitchen's exhaust system, and that flames could be seen shooting through the roof of the building. No injuries were reported, while an exact damage estimate has not been given as of yet--nor is it known how long the restaurant might be closed.

The Harvard Square location of Border Square first opened in 1987, with the restaurant being known for its Tex-Mex food along with its margaritas. (Other locations of the restaurant in the local area can be found in Burlington and Saugus.)

Battle Brewing Between Zuma Boston in the Back Bay and Zuma Tex-Mex Grill at Faneuil Hall

A naming dispute between two Boston restaurants appears to be heating up.

According to an article in The Boston Globe, the owners of Zuma Tex-Mex Grill at Faneuil Hall filed a lawsuit last month against Zuma Boston, a high-end Japanese restaurant at the Four Seasons Hotel One Dalton Street in the Back Bay, and a Superior Court judge has subsequently ruled in favor of the Tex-Mex spot. The post reports that Judge Brian A. Davis says "B.B. Kitchen [which owns Zuma Tex-Mex Grill] is a small, single location business that already is suffering from significant marketplace confusion and likely will continue to suffer so long as [UK-based parent company] Azumi operates its Zuma Boston under the Zuma name....Azumi, on the other hand, is an international operation with approximately $200 million in annual revenues." Davis says that Azumi will have to cease and desist all use of the Zuma name, including in everything from social media posts to signs and marketing/ads, while workers cannot tell customers that the restaurant is called Zuma.

The Globe mentions that Zuma Tex-Mex Grill claims the right to use the name based on an license agreement that Azumi entered with B.B. Kitchen in 2008 where the former would not open any locations of Zuma in New England. The Back Bay location of Zuma debuted in late May.

Tex Mex Eats Is Opening in Former Tupelo Space in Cambridge's Inman Square

The person behind a catering business, various pop-ups, and cooking classes in the local area is looking to open a new restaurant in Cambridge that combines the cuisines of a few different areas, replacing a dining spot that focused on foods with Southern influences.

According to a license commission hearing agenda page within the city's website, Tex Mex Eats is planning to open in the former Tupelo space on Cambridge Street in Inman Square, with the website for the business indicating that the new eatery may feature "'Texachusetts' flavors that combine Mexican dishes with local New England ingredients." The site states that Amanda Escamilla--who was part of the catering team at the now-closed East Coast Grill and who sells her foods at local farmers markets--is behind the restaurant, with her culinary influences coming from growing up on the Gulf Coast of South Texas. Based on the the menu within the Tex Mex Eats website (which encompasses what she currently offers through her business, including catering and cooking classes), the restaurant could feature such items as shrimp tamales, fish tacos, frito pie, cactus lima bean soup, arroz con pollo, enchiladas, brisket, pulled pork, ribs, cornbread, and a Latin-style whole roasted pig.

Tupelo closed in October after being in business for approximately ten years.

Chili's in Burlington Has Closed

A chain of Tex-Mex restaurants continues to close outlets in the local area, with a longtime location in the northern suburbs being the latest to shut down.

According to a source, Chili's in Burlington shuttered over the past day or two and that furniture was being removed from the Middlesex Turnpike space, with a check on the company's website indicating that the place has indeed been removed from its locations section. There had been much chatter about the Burlington location closing, though it was not known when (or even if) it might shut its doors until now. This is one of a handful of Chili's to close locally over the past several years, including outlets in Dedham, Hingham, and Wilmington, with others in Boston, Brockton, and Framingham also closing over the past decade or so. As of now, only five remaining locations of the chain can be found inside (or near) Route 128, including in Braintree, Chelsea, Danvers, Reading, and Walpole.

The Burlington location of Chili's had been in business for more than 30 years.

Boca Grande Changes Ownership, Will Open New Restaurant in Cambridge

What was once a local group of Mexican restaurants is now down to just one, but that will apparently be changing as it comes under new ownership.

According to an interview in the Cambridge Chronicle and Tab, Boca Grande has changed hands and is now owned by longtime employee and district general manager Silvia Whitman, who took it over from original owner Mariko Kamio who recently made the decision to retire. In the interview, Whitman says that renovations will be coming to the sole remaining location on First Street in East Cambridge, while a second shop is in the works in an undisclosed location in Cambridge, with that one possibly opening in November. Whitman also says the menu will be expanded to include more vegetarian options while also keeping existing menu favorites, and daily specials will also be offered as well.

Boca Grande, which started out in 1986, is known for its Mexican and Tex-Mex dishes; there were once locations of the eatery near Cambridge's Porter Square, Brighton Center, Brookline's Coolidge Corner, and Boston's Kenmore Square, but all of those have closed, with the Porter Square shop shutting down a couple of weeks ago.

Salsa's in South Boston Has Closed

What used to be a pair of restaurants featuring Mexican and Tex-Mex food is now completely gone, as its sole remaining location has gone dark.

An email sent yesterday mentioned that Salsa's in South Boston is now shuttered with the windows papered over, and a subsequent check on its website shows that the site is completely gone while phone calls to the Dorchester Street eatery would not go through. A few posters on the Southie Community Bulletin Board seem to confirm its closure as well, though one person says there is a "Closed for Renovations" sign out front as well.

As soon as we completely confirm that Salsa's has closed (or find out that it is indeed only closed for renovations), we will post an update here.

Salsa's first opened in South Boston back in the late 1990s; a second location of the restaurant on Route 3A in Hingham closed this summer after approximately ten years in business.

Salsa's in Hingham Has Closed

A pair of restaurants featuring Mexican and Tex-Mex food is now down to just one.

According to a message from one of our readers on the hiddenboston Twitter page, Salsa's in Hingham is no longer in business, with a phone call placed to their other restaurant in South Boston (which remains in operation) confirming that the Route 3A location has indeed shuttered. It appears that the Hingham dining spot may have closed around the end of June or early in July, though no exact date was given.

Salsa's featured such items as nachos, guacamole, tortilla soup, chili, tacos, burritos, chimichangas, enchiladas, quesadillas, carne asada, mole poblano, and Acapulco sea bass.

Update: Owners of Now-Closed Sierra's in Sudbury Attempting to Open Erica's within Space

[Ed note: This article was updated several times to reflect new information given, including the owners trying to open a new restaurant within the space.]

A Tex-Mex restaurant and sports bar in the western suburbs of Boston has closed once again.

According to a poster on Twitter, Sierra's in Sudbury is shuttered, with the parking lot being empty for more than a week. This seems to jibe with a note from a poster on the restaurant's Facebook page, which indicates it may have been closed as far back as August 20 (Sierra's did not respond to the poster's question about it being closed). In June, we had reported that the dining and drinking spot was going through financial difficulties (it had temporarily closed in April of 2013) and was given more time by the town to pay off its debt, though at the time, with the Sudbury Board of Selectmen giving the restaurant until November to chip away at the amount owed.

Several phone calls placed to Sierra's have gone unanswered today (no voicemail).

[December 15 update: According to an article in The Sudbury Town Crier, Sam and Erica Cannarozzi (the owners of the now-closed Sierra's) are hoping to pay the back taxes that they owe on the place so that they can open a new Italian restaurant there called Erica's. The article says that if all goes well, the new spot could be open in mid-February. (Thanks to several sources for initially bringing this to our attention.)]

[March 13, 2015 update: A new article in The Sudbury Town Crier states that town selectmen have rejected the application for a liquor license for the proposed Erica's restaurant because the owners still owe almost $30,000 in taxes from the now-closed Sierra's.]

[March 17, 2015 update: The MetroWest Daily News says that the owners of the now-closed Sierra's plan to refile the request for a liquor license for Erica's, with Erica Cannarozzi being the owner of the proposed spot. The article states that the town of Sudbury has a lien on the property, however, and is looking to have it foreclosed, while Sam Cannarozzi says he plans to pay the debt owed, though he is not sure if he would pay it before a scheduled April 7 Board of Selectmen meeting takes place.]

[May 4, 2015 update: The Sudbury Town Crier mentions that the town has approved of a full liquor license for the proposed Erica's restaurant, though with two stipulations: The total amount ($40,000) of back taxes, interest, and penalties for the now-closed Sierra's must be paid before the license is issued, and the license can be taken away if the owner fails to pay real estate taxes owed on the new place and the interest goes above $100.]

The owner of Sierra's ran another spot in Concord called Serafina, which also closed two separate times and is now permanently shuttered.

Moe's Southwest Grill Is Opening in Waltham

A chain of restaurants that features Tex-Mex food and southwestern fare continues its expansion into Massachusetts, with its upcoming location being the closest one yet to Boston.

According to their Twitter and Facebook pages, Moe's Southwest Grill is going to be opening on Main Street in Waltham later this month, moving into the space where Tony D's had been before moving to a nearby space on Main Street. Once the eatery opens (either February 23 or February 27, based on their Facebook and Twitter pages), Moe's in Waltham will join other locations in Natick, Chelmsford, Shrewsbury, Hanover, Worcester, and Plymouth, as well as several hundred other outlets of the Atlanta-based chain across the country.

The menu at Moe's Southwest Grill features rice bowls, nachos, burritos, quesadillas, fajitas, and tacos, with many individual dishes taking names from TV shows and movies. A few items on the menu include the Closetalker (from Seinfeld), which is a salad; the Billy Barou (from Caddyshack), a nacho plate that can be ordered with an array of meats and other items; the Alfredo Garcia fajitas (from the Sam Peckinpah movie Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia); and the Art Vandalay (from Seinfeld), which is a veggie burrito.
