Boston Halal to Open in the Former Blaze Pizza Space by Boston University

A local trio of restaurants that feature NYC-style street food will soon be opening a fourth outlet, and this one will be replacing a location of a pizza spot that closed a bit more than a year ago.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Boston Halal is going to be opening by Boston University, taking over the former Blaze Pizza space on Commonwealth Avenue. Once it opens, the new location of the Indian-Mediterranean spot will join others at Faneuil Hall, near Northeastern University, and in Somerville's Davis Square, and based on those dining spots, expect it to offer a variety of bowls and wraps.

The address for the upcoming location of Boston Halal by BU is 961 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA, 02215. The website for all locations is at https://bostonhalal.co/

This is the second location to close over recent times, as another at CityPlace within the State Transportation Building in the Theatre District shuttered last spring. (Another outlet remains in operation in Burlington.)

BE Pasta Bar Plans to Open in the Former Live Noodles Space on the Brookline/Boston Line

It looks like a restaurant featuring pasta is coming to a space by Boston University.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, BE Pasta Bar appears to be opening on Commonwealth Avenue where Brookline and Boston meet, and based on the address given, it would apparently move into the space that had once been home to Live Noodles. The signs out front say "homemade pasta sauce toppings" and "made daily always fresh" along with a "coming soon sign, though there does not appear to be any online/social media presence for the place as of yet.

The address for the upcoming BE Pasta Bar is 1026 Commonwealth Avenue, Brookline, MA, 02215.

Sunset Cantina in Boston Is Returning

It looks like a Tex-Mex restaurant that is particularly popular with college students is being reborn.

According its Instagram page, Sunset Cantina on Commonwealth Avenue by Boston University is planning to reopen, with one post saying "A renovated, vibrant and exciting cantina is coming! Are you ready #Boston?" A listing within the Boston Restaurant Group website indicates that the space is under agreement and it has a new lease with BU which hints that there is an ownership change, though no other details have been given.

Sunset Cantina had once been under the same ownership as Sunset Grill & Tap in Allston, but the parent company filed for bankruptcy and Sunset Grill closed while Sunset Cantina ultimately was acquired by East Coast Tavern Group (Emmet's, Roxanne's, Scholars, Carrie Nation). The restaurant--which is known in part for its nachos--has been shuttered for at least a couple of months now.

The address for Sunset Cantina is 916 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA, 02215.

[January 25, 2023 update: An article from Bostonia indicates that Sunset Cantina is open once again, with Catarina Chang of Koy near Faneuil Hall being the one of the new owners. The post mentions that the restaurant continues to serve the same type of nachos offered in its previous incarnation along with other Tex-Mex faves, while also adding "elevated" authentic Mexican fare to the menu as well. (Thanks to Adam Castiglioni for bringing the opening to our attention.)]

Pho Viet's in Allston Is Moving into Former Taqueria El Barrio Space by the BU West Campus

Last month we reported that a Mexican restaurant by Boston University had closed, but now we have learned that a nearby Vietnamese eatery will be moving into its space.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Pho Viet's has a sign up at the former Taqueria El Barrio site on Commonwealth Avenue by the BU West Campus on the Boston/Brookline border, with the sign simply saying "New Location Coming Soon!" (Taqueria El Barrio has since moved to Time Out Market in the Fenway.) It does appear that this is a move, as the original Pho Viet's is located a couple of blocks west within the Hong Kong Supermarket/Super 88 food court in Packard Corner.

Another location of the restaurant (called Pho Viet's II) can be found in Newton Centre.

The address of the new location of Pho Viet's by BU West is 1022 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA, 02215. The website for both locations is at https://www.phoviets.com/

[February 5, 2021 update: A poster on the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants page mentions that Pho Viet's plans to soft-open in its new home on Sunday, February 7, with an Instagram post from the place confirming this.]

A Mexican restaurant that was popular with college students during its relatively brief time in business has shut down.

According to multiple sources, Taqueria El Barrio by the BU West Campus in Boston is no longer in business, with a Facebook post from owner Alex Saenz saying the following:

It's official....Permanently Closed. We lost our beautiful little Taquería. We tried. I’m sorry. I honestly don't have the right words to say what I need to say. It never got a chance....Even though I'm deeply saddened that I couldn't keep it going, I'm also aware that I'm lucky to have my health & other opportunities to lean on.

Seanz also says that the team at the Commonwealth Avenue eatery will be at BISq in Cambridge's Inman Square for the next couple of weeks while also mentioning that he is also looking at possibly keeping the place going and that he is currently looking at options to do so.

Taqueria El Barrio first opened in the former UBurger space in the summer of 2019, offering such items as tacos, tortas, and quesadillas.

A Providence-based group of coffee shops that is known in part for its work with local nonprofits has closed its only remaining Boston location.

Based on a post from BU Today saying that the Blue State Coffee outlet on Commonwealth Avenue has been removed from the company's website, we reached out to the business who confirmed that the cafe has indeed shut down permanently. The note also indicated that its other locations in Providence, New Haven, and Hartford will remain in operation, while they said that "We're so thankful for our employees and the wonderful customers we met on Comm. Ave., and for their help in supporting the many local nonprofits we were able to work with throughout our time in Boston."

Blue State Coffee, which was founded in 2004, also had a store in Boston's Seaport District, but that location is no longer in business.

Roast Beast in Boston's Packards Corner Area Has Closed

A beloved roast beef shop in Boston has shut down, and the owner is putting the blame on the city of Boston.

According to a couple of sources, Roast Beast by Packards Corner is no longer in business, with a Facebook post from the place saying that the city fire inspector and Mayor Walsh "shut me down...no advance notice." The exact details of what resulted in the closing of the Commonwealth Avenue shop are unknown, so keep checking back for details as they come in.

Roast Beast, which first opened in early 2011, has been a fave among people in the restaurant industry over the years, and Chronicle covered it in an episode, saying that "The name will make you smile, and so won't the piled high roast beef sandwiches at this Commonwealth Ave eatery near Boston University."

The address for Roast Beast was 1080 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA, 02215.

[November 6 update: A new Facebook post mentions that the Roast Beast brand is now for sale, and it would apparently include the name, website, trademarks and copyrights, recipes, fixtures, and all else connected to the brand.]

[November 6 update #2: The City of Boston has responded to the Roast Beast issue, saying the following in a statement:
The Walsh Administration has made clear that we want to work with any small business owner to ensure they can be successful here in Boston. There is some work to be done to ensure that Roast Beast is operating safely but every department involved is more than willing to work with Roast Beast to help them through that process....After receiving a complaint from ISD's health division, a Boston Fire Department inspector visited the location and presented the owner with three options of varying costs: a restaurant hood, a recirculating hood or to use a panini press since they stated they were only interested in toasting bread....The owner refused the three options that were presented to him. During this visit, BFD observed a build up of grease on the sprinkler pipes and ceiling. It is not possible for this build up of grease to come from toasting bread, and it was a clear indication that there was cooking happening at this location.- Given the build up of grease on the sprinkler pipes and ceiling and the refusal of the owner to include any kind of ventilation, this is when BFD issued a cease and desist order as they did not believe that the restaurant was operating in a safe manner....The next day, BFD visited the restaurant again to offer the owner an opportunity to take 30 days to come up with a plan, and implement that plan. However, the attached abatement with that guidance was never provided to the owner as he stated that he was not interested in reopening.
This statement comes on the heels of owner D.J. Lawton telling boston.com that "I've been in business for nine years and nobody has told me I need a hood....For nine years I've been inspected perfectly and nobody's told me. If I had to put a hood in [the kitchen] it would cost me $150,000 to vent it up to the roof, and I don't know if the landlord would permit me to do that.”]

Taqueria El Barrio Is Opening in the Former UBurger Space by the BU West Campus in Boston

by Marc Hurwitz

It looks like a Mexican restaurant is on its way to Boston, and it will be moving into the space where a location of a group of burger spots had been.

According to a Twitter post from @sit4aspell, Taqueria El Barrio is opening in the former UBurger space by the BU West Campus, with the Commonwealth Avenue storefront showing a "coming soon" sign for the place. A Twitter page for the eatery is now up as well, though no tweets have been posted as of yet and a search online does not give any hints as to who might be behind the place. As soon as we get more information on Taqueria El Barrio, we will post an update here.

UBurger closed its outlet by BU West last October, as its lease expired and they decided not to renew it. (Locations of the burger place in Kenmore Square, Northeastern University, and Andover remain in operation.)

The address for the upcoming Taqueria El Barrio is 1022 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA, 02215.

[April 30 update: A Facebook post from Alex Saenz of BISq in Cambridge confirms what we had learned several weeks ago, that Taqueria El Barrio has a connection to both BISq and Bergamot in Somerville--and Saenz says that the place is "very close" to opening.]

[August 2 update: Eater Boston states that Taqueria El Barrio opens on Tuesday, August 6, with the restaurant offering tacos, tortas, and quesadillas.]

Xiang's Hunan Kitchen Replaces Gourmet Garden Near Boston University

by Marc Hurwitz

It looks like a Chinese restaurant has replaced an Asian fusion spot near Boston University that lasted less than two years.

According to a source (Sarah Wu), Xiang's Hunan Kitchen is now open in the former Gourmet Garden space on Commonwealth Avenue, with the name of the place indicating that it focuses at least in part on hot and spicy dishes. The restaurant appears to have opened over the past few days or so, and very little specific information has been given on it; as soon as we find out more, we will post an update here.

Gourmet Garden opened in the spring of 2017, replacing Limoo Tea Bar, an eclectic spot that offered a mix of Asian and Middle Eastern fare.

The address for Xiang's Hunan Kitchen is 1032 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA, 02215.

UBurger by the BU West Campus in Boston Is Closing

by Marc Hurwitz

A local group of burger spots is getting ready to close one of its locations.

A message from the business mentions that UBurger by the BU West campus in Boston is closing at the end of the month, as its lease is expiring and they have made the decision not to renew it. This more or less confirms what a Twitter poster put up today, showing a "For Lease" sign in the window of the Commonwealth Avenue space. UBurger does tell us that their locations in Kenmore Square, Northeastern University, and Andover remain in operation.

The address for this soon-to-close burger spot by BU West is: UBurger, 1022 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA, 02215. The website for all locations can be found at https://uburger.com/

Love Art Udon to Replace Angora Cafe by Boston University

by Marc Hurwitz

[Ed note: This article was updated on May 4 to reflect confirmation of Angora being closed for good--and a new restaurant moving into its space.]

It looks like a longtime European-style cafe that was popular with college students is gone for good after stating earlier that it had been temporarily closed for renovations.

Eater Boston is reporting that Angora Cafe by Boston University appears to be shuttered permanently, as sources say there are signs showing that the Commonwealth Avenue space is up for lease and that its windows remain papered over nearly a month after the place said they would reopen before the end of 2017--and now, its website has been taken down as well. The eatery, which got its start more than 30 years ago, was known in part for its sandwiches, Mediterranean-influenced menu items, and smoothies and frozen yogurt.

The address for Angora Cafe is 1024 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA, 02215.

[May 4 update: A new article from Eater Boston confirms that Angora Cafe has shuttered for good, and that a new spot called Love Art Udon (from the people behind Love Art Sushi, a sushi and poke spot on Haviland Street) will open in its space. EB says that the upcoming eatery will focus on udon dishes along with tempura options.]

Life Alive Is Opening in Former Panera Space at Boston University’s West Campus

A local group of cafes featuring healthy, organic food will be opening a new location that should be popular with students.

Eater Boston is reporting (via The Daily Free Press) that Life Alive is planning to open in the former Panera space on Commonwealth Avenue at Boston University's West Campus. The new shop will join others in Cambridge, Salem, and Lowell, and there had been talk earlier of the group of eateries looking to open in Jamaica Plain and at another Cambridge location as well, though there has been no word on either of late. Based on the other locations, expect to see vegetarian, vegan, and raw options at the upcoming Life Alive, including such items as wraps, salads, coffee, tea, smoothies, and desserts.

Panera closed its shop at BU's West Campus in May of this year, citing high rents as a reason for its closure.

The address for this new cafe by BU is: Life Alive, 888 Commonwealth Avenue, Brookline, MA, 02115. Its website can be found at http://www.lifealive.com/

[April 25, 2018 update: The Daily Free Press mentions that the new location of Life Alive at BU's West Campus plans to open this summer.]
