Brothers Marketplace Is Opening in Waltham

by Marc Hurwitz

A local supermarket chain that is getting ready to close one of its locations is also going to be opening an outlet of its upscale neighborhood market concept.

According to a post in the Daily Times Chronicle on the upcoming closing of Roche Bros. in Burlington, the company is also planning to open a new location of Brothers Marketplace in Waltham. An earlier Boston Globe article confirms this, saying that the Wellesley-based chain will be opening Brothers in the Merc at Moody and Main apartment building in the downtown area sometime next spring. Once it opens, the new market will join other locations in Weston and Medfield.

The two Brothers Marketplaces are small grocery stores that focus on fresh foods and regional products; another shop had been planned for Somerville's Davis Square, but it ended up falling through and a location of bfresh (another small-market concept, with this one affiliated with Stop & Shop) opened in the Elm Street space earlier this year.

The website for Brothers Marketplace can be found at http://www.brothers-marketplace.com/

[May 2 update: According to a press release, the new Brothers Marketplace in Waltham is now open.]

Joshua Smith of Moody's Deli in Waltham to Open Shop Featuring Smoked Meats, Baked Goods

The person behind an award-winning deli along with an adjacent wine bar and a meat-processing plant is opening a new shop, and this one will focus on smoked meats, baked goods, and pastries.

Boston Magazine is reporting that Joshua Smith of Moody's Delicatessen and Provisions and the Backroom on Moody Street in Waltham--as well as the New England Charcuterie plant on the other side of the city--is planning to open a store that offers such items as ribs, brisket, pulled pork, burnt ends, sausages, breads, biscuits, cornbread, pretzels, doughnuts, cookies, and more. The article mentions that the as-of-yet unnamed shop, will be two doors away from the deli in the space where a Haitian market had been and will help Smith shift BBQ items and baked goods away from the original space, with Smith saying that the barbecue "sells OK at the deli, but people don't go there thinking, 'I'm going to get some ribs.' If we refocus another space toward that, we can sell our smoked meat and sausages." If all goes as planned, the new store may open by November.

The article also says that Smith is hoping to open an oyster bar somewhere along Moody Street at some point in the future.

It looks like the address for the new shop will be 454 Moody Street, Waltham, MA, 02453.

Joshua Smith (Moody's Deli, Backroom, New England Charcuterie) Opening Meat-Processing Plant and Tasting Room in Waltham

A couple of years ago, we reported that the person behind an award-winning deli and specialty food shop was opening a restaurant (now open) within the space, along with a meat-processing plant nearby. Now we have learned a bit more about the latter.

According to an article in The Boston Globe, Joshua Smith of Moody's Delicatessen and Provisions and the Backroom on Moody Street in Waltham is beginning to build a facility within a commercial park in the city that will have 10,000 square feet of space and a capacity of producing more than 55,000 pounds of meat at a time under the brand New England Charcuterie (the current production space at Moody's is only 700 square feet with a capacity of 1,400 pounds at a time). The post mentions that in addition to processing meat, the plant will also have a tasting room where people can try some of the products.

The Globe article also hints at things that could be coming down the road, with Smith saying that he can eventually picture a "string" of Moody's Delis across New England. (Smith currently has a mini-version of the deli within a new location of Gordon's Fine Wines and Liquors in Boston's Downtown Crossing.)

Dan McCarthy, who wrote the Globe article, tells us that the processing plant will be located at 108 Clematis Avenue Unit D, which is off Beaver Street near where Waltham meets both Belmont and Watertown.

The website for New England Charcuterie can be found at http://www.newenglandcharcuterie.com/

[February 26 update: The Waltham News Tribune mentions that the Moody's/New England Charcuterie meat processing plant could be up and running by April.]

Dovetail Sake Brewery Is Coming to Waltham

A new brewery is on its way to the Boston area, and this will be the first brewery of its kind in Massachusetts.

Boston Magazine is reporting that Todd Bellomy and Daniel Krupp are planning to open Dovetail Sake in Waltham, with the brewery being in a warehouse where they will have 1,000 square feet of space to produce two styles of sake--a nigori and a junmai-shu. The article says that the Dovetail products should be available in stores sometime this winter, and that Bellomy and Krupp are actually looking to move the business into a larger space at some point in 2015 where they plan to have tours and tastings.

Bellomy used to be a brewer at Boston Beer Company and has also trained at sake breweries in Japan, while Krupp is a Level One graduate of the Sake Professional course with sake expert John Gauntner.
