Little India in Waltham Has Closed; Incredible India to Replace It

A suburban Indian restaurant that was slated to close last fall only to remain in operation has closed for real this time, though a new Indian dining spot will be taking over its space.

According to a Facebook post from The Waltham Channel, Little India in Waltham has shuttered and is being sold, with a restaurant called Incredible India planning to open in the Moody Street space, keeping the menu and the space "mostly the same" while a post within the thread from the owner's son indicates that the staff will also remain in place, at least for now. Little India, which first opened 37 years ago, said back in October of 2024 that the landlord was not going to be renewing its lease which was to end at the end of November, though the restaurant ended up staying open on a month-by-month basis.

Little India in Waltham Is Planning to Close

An Indian restaurant west of Boston that has been around for a long time is shutting down.

According to a post from Kiat Cormier of the ChewOnThis Facebook group, Little India in Waltham is closing, with a post from WCAC-TV confirming that the Moody Street eatery will indeed be saying farewell as the landlord will not be renewing its lease which ends on November 30. Little India first opened 36 years ago, featuring North Indian dishes and a lunch buffet.

Emma's Macarons in Waltham Has Closed

A shop west of Boston that featured a popular French confection has shut down.

According to a source, Emma's Macarons in Waltham is no longer in business, with an Instagram post from the Moody Street store indicating that it closed its doors yesterday, saying "I'm so sorry to those who did not get the chance to see us one last time. This was completely unexpected....Emma's Macarons will be taking a break from baking and any future updates will be posted on Instagram & Facebook." Emma's first opened in the spring of 2022 in the former Alba Mediterranean Market and Bakery space, offering small-batch macarons along with other pastries and baked goods.

Rassa Is Opening in the Waltham Space That Had Been Home to Molti on Moody and Moody's Delicatessen

A brand new restaurant is on its way to Waltham, moving into the space that had been home to a couple of dining spots--including an award-winning deli.

According to a source, Rassa is planning to open on Moody Street, taking over the space where Molti on Moody had previously been, and before that, Moody's Delicatessen and Provisions. The website for the upcoming eatery says that it will be "an upscale Indian restaurant with full bar, where we artfully elevate the flavors of Southern India's culinary traditions," and that if all goes as planned, it will open sometime this month.

Molti on Moody, which was known in part for its sandwiches, opened in the fall of 2020, closing down in early 2022; Moody's Delicatessen, which received both local and national recognition for its deli offerings, had been in the space from 2013 until morphing into Molti in 2020.

Caffe Ollo Is Opening in Waltham

A new coffee shop appears to be opening west of Boston.

According to a Twitter thread from @y2000k, Caffe Ollo is planning to open in Waltham, moving into the Cronin's building on Moody Street. The website for the upcoming spot says that it will offer coffee, tea, breakfast, and desserts, and that it will include "service with elegant music." No opening date has been given for Caffe Ollo as of yet, and the menu part of the website has not been set up yet, so check back for updates as they come in.

Shiki Shabu Shabu Is Opening in the Former Playmakers Bar and Grill Space in Waltham

A new dining spot is on its way to Waltham, moving into a space that had been home to a sports bar.

According to a tweet from @y2000k, Shiki Shabu Shabu is going to be opening on Moody Street, taking over the former Playmakers Bar and Grill space which had also been home to Stadium Sports Bar and Grill, and before that, Robert's Restaurant and Bar. An earlier post from WCAC-TV had mentioned that Shiki Shabu Shabu had been planning to open in the space as far back as the latter part of 2021, and a sign for the place has finally gone up with @y2000k saying it appears that it could be opening soon.

WakuWaku Ramen & Sake Is Opening in the Former Pollo Club Space in Waltham

A couple of months ago, it was reported that a restaurant in Boston's Chinatown neighborhood was expanding to Harvard Square in Cambridge, and now we have learned that a new outlet is opening in the western suburbs as well.

According to a tweet from @y2000k, WakuWaku Ramen & Sake is going to be opening in Waltham, moving into the former Pollo Club space on Moody Street. An earlier article from WCAC-TV mentioned that the eatery would be opening in the 900-square-foot space while an article here stated that the Harvard Square location opened last month on Brattle Street. (The original location opened on Tyler Street in Chinatown in the spring of 2021.)

Taste House Opens in the Former Bison County Space in Waltham

Back in 2020, it was reported that a longtime barbecue spot west of Boston had shut down permanently and that an Asian eatery was planning to move into the space, and now we have learned that the new restaurant has finally opened.

According to a tweet from @y2000k, Taste House Bar and Asian Cuisine is now open in Waltham, moving into the space on Moody Street that had been home to Bison County. As mentioned earlier, it appears that the new dining spot offers Szechuan fare though its menu also includes dishes with Taiwanese influences as well, and the place is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week.

Bison County first opened in 1995, featuring such dishes as chili, pulled pork, brisket, baby back ribs, wings, and fried catfish; the restaurant shuttered when Covid hit in March of 2020 and it officially closed down for good several months later.

Deep Ellum to Be Reborn, Opening in Waltham Where The Gaff Resides

A popular gastropub in Allston that closed a couple of years ago is planning to reopen, replacing a beer bar in Waltham.

According to a source, Deep Ellum is looking to open back up on Moody Street, taking over the space where The Gaff is located. A Facebook post from The Waltham Channel gives some information on the proposed change to the space, saying the following:

Company officials for Deep Ellum appeared before the city's license commission Wednesday to transfer The Gaff's liquor and other licenses. Deep Ellum co-owner Max Toste, an industry veteran, already operates two bars, one in East Cambridge and one in Allston. Toste has known The Gaff's owner, Mike Coen, for years. "We're excited to move into his space as he moves on to bigger things and be part of the neighborhood like we were in Allston," he said. "We're going to serve yummy food for lunch and dinner and keep up the craft beer and cocktail stuff they were doing."

The post mentions that The Gaff, which first opened in 2009, does not yet have a closing date, while Toste, who is behind two locations of Lone Star Taco Bar, is looking to serve such items as burgers, reubens, charcuterie boards, and breakfast tacos at Deep Ellum, while possibly offering live entertainment such as jazz.

Aegean Restaurant Is Being Reborn in Waltham

A beloved pair of Greek restaurants west of Boston may be gone, but a new location is now on the way.

A source tells us (via Kiat Cormier on the Chew on This Facebook page) that the Aegean Restaurant is planning to open in Waltham, with an Instagram page from the business saying "Look out for our opening day announcement!" while also indicating that it will offer both Greek and Armenian fare. Kiat mentions that the dining spot will be opening on Moody Street, with the address indicating that it will apparently move into the old S&S Tools space. The Aegean once had locations in Watertown and Framingham, though the former closed in 2016 and the latter closed during the pandemic and went up for auction last spring; both restaurants were known for their classic Greek dishes such as stuffed grape leaves, spinach pie, roast leg of lamb, gyro plates, shrimp kabobs, chicken souvlaki, moussaka, and pastitsio.

Da Vinci Ristorante Plans to Open in Waltham

It looks like the people behind a pair of MetroWest restaurants may be opening a new location of one of its dining spots a bit closer to Boston.

According to a source within the restaurant industry, Da Vinci Ristorante is planning to open in Waltham, with the address given within a legal notice that was sent to us indicating that it would be going into the Charcoal Guido's space on Moody Street. Based on the manager listed in the notice (Jaswant Singh), the proposed dining spot indeed has a connection to Da Vinci Bistro in Sudbury, along with Soul of India, which also resides in that town.

Molti on Moody and the Pollo Club in Waltham Have Closed

A couple of Waltham restaurants under the same ownership have shut down, and Covid appears to be to blame.

According to multiple sources (including Aron Levy who first brought it to our attention), Molti on Moody and the Pollo Club--both of which are on Moody Street--are no longer in business, with a note from them saying that "Along with the entire restaurant community, COVID-19 has had a direct impact on our businesses, and we have made the difficult decision not to reopen after a challenging several years." The Molti on Moody space had formerly been home to Moody's Delicatessen and Provisions, while the Pollo Club space had formerly been home to El Rincon de Moody's.

Common Good Co. Is Opening in Waltham

It looks like a brand new coffee shop and coworking space is on its way to the western suburbs of Boston.

According to a tweet from @y2000k, Common Good Co. is planning to open in Waltham, moving into an as-of-yet undisclosed space on Moody Street, though based on a picture posted on its website, it appears that the shop could be moving into a space just north of the Chestnut Street intersection. The website give a bit more information on the upcoming place, saying that it is a "locally-owned coffee shop and co-working space focused not just on profits, but on creating a wave of positive change for all mankind" while also stating that it plans to open sometime in 2022.

As soon as we find out more information on Common Good Co., we will post an update here.

Moody Street in Waltham Is Closed to Traffic for a Second Season; Outdoor Patios Being Set Up Once Again

A "restaurant row" in the western suburbs has been shut down to vehicular traffic for another season in order to help dining spots out as the pandemic continues.

According to an article from NBC 10, Moody Street in Waltham is now closed to traffic from the Pine Street/Crescent Street intersection up to High Street as of Saturday, May 1, and it will remain shut down until October 31. As was the case last year, the closure of the road will allow restaurants to have expanded outdoor dining out front, while patrons will need to wear face masks except when seated and dining spots will need to supply customers with hand sanitizer and paper menus.

Last year the same stretch of Moody Street was shut down to vehicles from June 8 to November 1.

Penang Opens in Waltham

A restaurant in Boston that features Southeast Asian fare has opened a second location in the western suburbs, nearly a year and a half after the plans were first announced.

According to a source, Penang is now open in Waltham, moving into the former Tiki House space on Moody Street. As mentioned here earlier, the new eatery is connected to the restaurant by the same name on Washington Street in Boston's Chinatown neighborhood, and it focuses on Malaysian cuisine along with some Thai fare and other Southeast Asian dishes.

Indulgenza Is Opening in Waltham

It looks like a new dessert and pastry shop is on its way to the western suburbs of Boston.

According to a source, Indulgenza is planning to open in Waltham, moving into a space on Moody Street between Spruce Street and Taylor Street. The Facebook page for the upcoming shop says that it is coming soon while mentioning that "Something delicious sweet and savory is waiting for you." A Facebook post within the Bring Retail to Waltham group page shows a "permit to build" sign in the storefront, mentioning that the place will be a dessert and pastry shop with no baking done on the premises.

Moody's Delicatessen and Provisions in Waltham Is Now MOLTI on Moody

An award-winning suburban deli has gone through a name change and a bit of a reconcepting.

According to a source (Young-Ho Yoon), Moody's Delicatessen & Provisions in Waltham has become MOLTI on Moody, confirming what we had heard last month (we talked to Moody's about it at the time and they told us that they would be releasing details soon). The new shop appears to be an expansion of sorts of the former Moody's, saying the following in a Facebook post:

As the world changes, we are changing with it. The team from Moody's Delicatessen & Provisions is proud to introduce MOLTI on Moody. Molti means "many" in Italian, and we aim to provide just that -- many more of the offerings you want. MOLTI on Moody is an expansion of our beloved deli. You'll find your traditional deli favorites along with grab & go salads, sandwiches, pizza, take & bake dinners, and prepackaged foods, all aimed at providing you with fresh, healthy, and quality products with minimal contact.

The note goes on to say that The Backroom (a restaurant and bar next door) will remain in operation, though it is not known what the exact status of the Moody's location in Boston's Back Bay is, so keep checking back for updates as they come in.

Moody's first opened its doors in Waltham in 2013.

Bison County in Waltham Has Closed; Taste House Restaurant Plans to Take Over Space

A barbecue spot that has been around for a long time appears to have shut down permanently, and a new restaurant is looking to move into its space.

According to a source, Bison County in Waltham is closed for good, with a Facebook post from The Waltham Channel saying that "After closing due to COVID and not reopening, Bison County...is gone." The post says that a Sichuan spot called Taste House Restaurant is planning to open in the Moody Street space, with this being confirmed in a license commission agenda page that shows the proposed liquor license transfer.

Bison County, which first opened in 1995, was known for such dishes as chili, pulled pork, brisket, baby back ribs, wings, fried catfish, and more. The restaurant was in the news this summer for having a "seized" sign posted out front that turned out to apparently be not real.

Update: Bison County in Waltham Has Not Been Seized by the State After All

[Ed note: This article was updated to reflect new information confirming that the restaurant has not been seized by the state.]

Early today, we reported that the future of a longtime suburban barbecue spot had been taken over by the state. Now we have discovered that this is not true.

According to a source within the restaurant industry, Bison County in Waltham had apparently been seized, with another source sending us a picture showing a sign out front that indicates the Moody Street eatery is now in possession of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for nonpayment of taxes. Based on information that we have received this afternoon, it turns out that this sign was not real and authorities are reportedly getting to the bottom of what appears to be some sort of scam by somebody. If and when we get any further information on this, we will post an update here, but to repeat, Bison County has not been seized by the state.

Bison County first opened in 1995, with the dining spot offering such dishes as corn fritters, chili, fried pickles, pulled pork, brisket, baby back ribs, wings, fried catfish, bison tips, and more.

Sweet Basil in Needham to Expand to Second Location in Waltham

A popular Italian restaurant in the western suburbs of Boston is being joined by another location west of the city that will also sell products for cooking at home.

According to a press release, Sweet Basil Restaurant + Provisions is opening in Waltham, taking over the former Balani space on Moody Street--and joining the original Sweet Basil in Needham Center. The release mentions that chef/owner David Becker actually had a pop-up version of Sweet Basil in the old Balani space (which he also owned), with Becker saying the following:

I've wanted to expand the original Sweet Basil to include a provisions or market side for a long time. We're currently selling pasta and sauces at a bunch of locations, not just in the restaurant. With the changes we had to make due to COVID-19 we tried different things at different locations, just like every other restaurant in the area. I was shocked, but nobody wanted the Sweet Basil pop-up to go away and while Balani was creatively fun for me, it's always about what the people in our neighborhood want. We're fully converting the space and switching over to Sweet Basil's menu, we'll keep some Balani favorites on as special features and I'm looking forward to introducing people to our provisions menu for guests that want to make Sweet Basil classics at home.

In addition to Sweet Basil and the now-closed Balani, Becker also runs Juniper in Wellesley as well.
