2 Jerks Kitchen & Bar in Raynham Reopens After Being Hit By Fire

A barbecue spot south of Boston has returned to its space after closing down due to a fire that heavily damaged it in the spring.

According to a source, 2 Jerks Kitchen & Bar in Raynham is open once again, with a Facebook post from the place saying that they are open for dinner with lunch service on the way soon--and as mentioned earlier, the back room of the place has been turned into "a more authentic southern market dining experience." The post also indicates that 2 Jerks will continue to work with the Easton Country Club, where they offered indoor/outdoor dining and takeout while recovering from the fire, saying that "We look forward to continuing that partnership for many years to come!"

2 Jerks Kitchen & Bar was hit by a blaze in May that apparently started due to excess grease in a smoker that caused quite a bit of damage to the space, though the fire took place when the restaurant was empty and no one was injured.

The address for 2 Jerks Kitchen & Bar is 701 Broadway, Raynham, MA, 02767. Its website can be found at http://2jerksbbq.com/

Update: Bison County in Waltham Has Not Been Seized by the State After All

[Ed note: This article was updated to reflect new information confirming that the restaurant has not been seized by the state.]

Early today, we reported that the future of a longtime suburban barbecue spot had been taken over by the state. Now we have discovered that this is not true.

According to a source within the restaurant industry, Bison County in Waltham had apparently been seized, with another source sending us a picture showing a sign out front that indicates the Moody Street eatery is now in possession of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for nonpayment of taxes. Based on information that we have received this afternoon, it turns out that this sign was not real and authorities are reportedly getting to the bottom of what appears to be some sort of scam by somebody. If and when we get any further information on this, we will post an update here, but to repeat, Bison County has not been seized by the state.

Bison County first opened in 1995, with the dining spot offering such dishes as corn fritters, chili, fried pickles, pulled pork, brisket, baby back ribs, wings, fried catfish, bison tips, and more.

The address for Bison County is 275 Moody Street, Waltham, MA, 02453.

At this time, we are unsure of the impact this will have on our operation but will keep you all posted as soon as we have an idea of how long we will need to be closed."

Bonez Brothers BBQ Is Opening in Quincy

A new barbecue joint is on its way to the Boston area, and it will feature a type of meat that isn't all that easy to find in the region.

According to City of Quincy consultant and publicist Kerry J. Byrne, Bonez Brothers BBQ is opening in Quincy, with Todd Noon of the Massachusetts-based catering company by the same name being behind the Southern Artery dining spot. Byrne tells us that the restaurant will feature such classics as pulled pork, brisket, and baby back ribs, and the menu will also include a number of alligator-based dishes, including alligator fritters, alligator sausage, and alligator tail. Bonez Brothers BBQ will feature a favorite among their catering/event options as well--Love in a Cup, which is a 16-ounce Solo cup with layers of pulled pork, barbecue sauce, collard greens, beans and cole slaw, all topped with a pickle and more sauce. If all goes as planned, Bonez Brothers BBQ could be opening in a couple of weeks.

Todd Noon is a longtime alligator hunter who took up competitive barbecuing in Florida and was involved with Michelbob's, an award-winning restaurant in Naples.

The address for this new BBQ spot in Quincy is: Bonez Brothers BBQ, 657 Southern Artery, Quincy, MA, 02169. The Instagram page for the business can be found at https://www.instagram.com/bonezbrothersbbq/

Update: Lester's Roadside BBQ in Burlington Has Closed, May Move to New Location

by Marc Hurwitz

[Ed note: This article was updated on August 10 to reflect new information given on the status of the place.]

It looks like a suburban barbecue spot has very quietly shuttered, at least for now.

According to several sources, Lester's Roadside BBQ in Burlington has been locked up and dark this week, with a check on the Cambridge Street restaurant indicating that there is one sign inside the door that says "Sorry, we are closed," while another sign says "Closed until further notice" while giving an email address below for more information. We sent an email out to the place and are waiting to hear back to find out what is going on with the spot.

Lester's first opened in 2005, offering such items as ribs, pulled pork and chicken, brisket, chili, sausage, macaroni and cheese, and more.

The address for Lester's Roadside BBQ is 376 Cambridge Street (Route 3A), Burlington, MA, 01803. Its website can be found at http://www.lestersbbq.com/

[August 10 update: A message from the restaurant indicates that Lester's is closed temporarily and that the people behind it are hoping to find a new location and could reopen soon, though the process may end up taking awhile.]

[August 29 update: The future of Lester's appears to be in question now, as a Facebook poster asked a couple of weeks ago if it would be closing forever and the person behind the Lester's page [ed note--the page is now down] said "I don't know. Let's hope not!" while going on to state that "I don't know what the next steps will be for the owner....This is a sad time, With the influx of restaurants, mostly chains, the single proprietor is an anomaly." (Thanks to the Patch for bringing this to our attention.)]

[September 26 update: Lester's future looks even more in doubt now, as a new Patch article indicates that the place is now looking to sell its liquor license, and as mentioned in an ed note above, the Facebook page for the restaurant is gone.]

It looks like a popular BBQ spot in one of the busiest parts of Somerville has been closed down for the time being due to a fire.

According to a post from The Somerville News Weekly, Redbones in Davis Square had firefighters on the roof of the Chester Street dining spot, fighting a blaze that started sometime this morning. A Facebook post from The Somerville Journal mentions that this was a grease fire that was contained to the ductworks of the building and that no damage was suffered by the restaurant. Please stay tuned for more updates" while a more recent Twitter post says that "The restaurant is closed. If you need assistance, please try calling the catering office at 617-764-5291."

Blue Ribbon BBQ to Open in Dedham

Several months ago, it first came out that a pair of barbecue joints may be joined by a third location. Now we have learned that this will indeed be taking place.

According to an article from Eater Boston, Blue Ribbon BBQ will be opening in Dedham, with the lease being signed last week for a space in Dedham Square. An exact address has not yet been given for the upcoming place, but Eater says that it will be much larger than the West Newton and Arlington locations, with a seating capacity somewhere around or above 50. In June, EB interviewed owner Ron Stoloff, who said that he had been eyeing potential sites for a new shop somewhere in the local area.

Blue Ribbon BBQ opened on Washington Street in West Newton in 1995, while the Mass. Ave. location in Arlington opened its doors in 1997. The website for both locations is at http://www.blueribbonbbq.com/

[January 9, 2017 update: The Dedham Patch indicates that the new location of Blue Ribbon BBQ will be at 350 Washington Street.]

[February 7, 2018 update: According to a source, the new location of Blue Ribbon BBQ in Dedham plans to open on Monday, February 12.]

Plans Fall Through for Hill Country in Boston's Fort Point

Earlier this fall, we reported that a New York-based BBQ spot was hoping to open in Boston's Fort Point neighborhood. Now we have learned that these plans have fallen through.

According to an article from Eater Boston, Hill Country will apparently not be opening at 374 Congress Street, with a rep for the spot saying that they have "no immediate plans" to open there, "due to a number of factors." The rep does say that the barbecue place is still looking for a location somewhere in Boston, though no specifics were given as to where they might be looking. Last month, a tweet from @FortPointer (via @jzmartin) mentioned that plans had indeed fallen through for Hill Country, but no confirmation from the restaurant had come until now.

Currently, locations of Hill Country can be found in the Flatiron section of Manhattan, downtown Brooklyn, and the Penn Quarter area of Washington, DC; the restaurants focus on dishes inspired by the barbecue joints of Central Texas, including such options as red chili, brisket, pork loin, sausage, green bean casserole, and more, with meats being served by the pound on butcher paper.

The website for Hill Country Barbecue Market can be found at http://www.hillcountryny.com/

Morrell's BBQ to Open Restaurant and Jazz Club in Former LaStoria Space in Stoughton

The person behind a food truck that focuses on BBQ could be opening a brick-and-mortar restaurant and music spot in the space where an Italian eatery had been.

According to a source, Morrell Presley of Morrell's BBQ currently has his truck set up in the parking lot of the now-closed LaStoria Italian Bar & Grill in Stoughton, with the source telling us that a barbecue spot could be opening in the restaurant space there. A Facebook post on the Stoughton News page seems to confirm this, saying that "If you love BBQ & Jazz, you'll love that Morrell Presley's Barbecue, which has most recently been located in a truck outside the Sons of Italy Hall, has found a new home. The family plans to renovate the former Lastoria site, and make it into a barbecue restaurant and jazz club!" The Morrell's food truck offers such items as ribs, brisket, pulled pork, burgers, macaroni and cheese, collard greens, and more; it is not known if the brick-and-mortar would have a similar menu or if more options might be added..

LaStoria was a regional Italian restaurant that opened approximately 20 years ago; the place closed its doors for good this summer.

The address for the upcoming barbecue restaurant and jazz club from Morrell's is 577 Washington Street (Route 138), Stoughton, MA, 02072.

Village Smokehouse in Brookline Village Is Becoming Magnolia Smokehouse

A BBQ spot whose owner was in the news awhile back now has a new name--and it is apparently under new ownership as well.

According to a poster on the Chowhound site, Village Smokehouse in Brookline Village has a sign that says "Magnolia Smokehouse," with the poster indicating that it is open and it is "business as usual" within the space. A check on the new restaurant's website and social media pages shows that it indeed appears to be open, and it offers such items as fried dill pickles, muffalettas, shrimp po'boys, brisket, a fried green tomato BLT, smoked turkey, pork schnitzel, Memphis ribs, fried chicken, and more.

Last fall, we had mentioned that Village Smokehouse owner Alan F. Kaplan was facing arson charges connected to a fire that destroyed a home back in 2013; since then, a few sources have told us that the dining spot was coming under new ownership and would possibly get a new name but would remain a BBQ spot.

Village Smokehouse had been in business for nearly 30 years.

The address for Magnolia Smokehouse (and the Village Smokehouse) is 1 Harvard Street, · Brookline Village, MA, 02445. The website for Magnolia Smokehouse can be found at http://www.magnoliabrookline.com/

[July 13 update: Eater Boston mentions that Magnolia Smokehouse indeed has different ownership than Village Smokehouse--it is the group behind Carrie Nation, Emmet's, and Scholars, which is called East Coast Tavern Group. (EB also says that Magnolia Smokehouse is in the process of getting up and running.)]

[August 5 update: According to an article in the Brookline TAB, the restaurant is now under new ownership but is still being run as Village Smokehouse, but the place will soon be closing for about a week and will reopen as Magnolia Smokehouse around mid-September, with some renovations made and a new menu that will focus more on Southern-style BBQ rather than Texas-style BBQ.]

[September 7 update: According to one of the people behind the place, Magnolia Smokehouse is now open.]

Blue Ribbon BBQ in West Newton and Arlington Considering Third Location

It looks like a pair of Boston-area barbecue joints could be joined by a third location.

An Eater Boston interview with Blue Ribbon BBQ owner Ron Stoloff indicates that he is eyeing potential sites for a new shop that would join the existing restaurants in West Newton and Arlington, with Stoloff saying "Now, we think we're ready for a third store, and we're actively looking for a location." Earlier this month, we had also mentioned that the West Newton shop was possibly going to be expanding into the space next door, though this did not come up in the interview.

Blue Ribbon BBQ first opened on Washington Street in West Newton in 1995, with the Mass. Ave. location in Arlington debuting in 1997. The website for both shops can be found at http://www.blueribbonbbq.com/

Blue Ribbon BBQ Plans to Expand Its West Newton Space

It looks like a pair of barbecue joints west of Boston may be expanding one of its shops.

According to a Twitter post from Boston Herald writer @DGoodison, the West Newton location of Blue Ribbon BBQ is planning to take over the space next door, adding 37 seats if all goes as planned. The address we have been given for the space indicates that the eatery would be moving into the MAPFRE/Commerce Insurance space, which is to the left of the restaurant.

In addition to its West Newton shop, Blue Ribbon BBQ also has a location on Mass. Ave. in Arlington.

The address for Blue Ribbon BBQ in West Newton is 1375 Washington Street, West Newton, MA, 02465, while the address for the space that it is hoping to expand into is 1379 Washington Street. The website for Blue Ribbon is at http://www.blueribbonbbq.com/
